Jaguar ran really poorly on just about everything and was pretty unstable. Panther was easily the best OS X for G3s and single CPU G4s. Unfortunately there aren't any up to date browsers for Panther anymore. All my clamshells that dual boot have Tiger on them now (with the exception of 1 that has 10.0 just for kicks) and Tiger WebKit is the browser of choice.
I've looked and looked, however I can't find a download for Tiger-WebKit. Where did you find it? Also, does it work well? Outdated, correct? Thanks.

yeah ok... putting jaguar was a bad idea. Its running pretty laggy and browsers are not good enough. i forgot now but was there a special version of tiger that runs on clamshells because it does not have firewire or is that wrong?

No special version, FireWire was a requirement for all versions of Tiger, but it's easily bypassed with xpostfacto on a Clamshell.

We're getting that worked out in a group chat. I am not using Jaguar, I don't know where you got that idea. Unless you're in our AIM chat. I was discussing it there. But no, installing Jaguar was never an idea. I was just using the Jaguar discs to erase the iBook's hard drive.

Clamshells came both with and without FW.

Officially, computers that do not have FW can not run Tiger at all. This is true even in the early non-FW slot load iMacs, which are more or less the same as the Firewire ones aside from not having the ports.

For minor differences(like the iMac I mentioned above) you can often get away with using Open Firmware to trick the installer into thinking it's going on a supported Mac.

Otherwise, the easiest way is to use Xpostfacto from OWC. It installs the missing kexts and other things needed to make the computer run Tiger. It's not perfect, though. I have a Lombard PowerBook with a G4 upgrade, and could not for the life of me get Tiger to install on it. I finally ended up dropping the drive into a TiBook, installing Tiger, updating, and then running Xpostfacto on the Lombard to get the Tiger install working correctly. Now I'd be all set if I could get Leopard going on that computer :)

so i stayed up till 3am and got my g3 running Tiger. Had to modify the tiger install cd and replace the failing cd drive with a dvd drive from an old windows laptop (not a perfect fit). What a pain that was. as it kept failing to install and before i got the modified tiger disk going i had to keep typing in open firmware code maybe 20 times over every time it failed to install.

How did you go with yours?

This is a bit of a disappointment.

I spent hours - no, days - trying to get Tiger installed. I just keep having problems. And I have some other stuff going on too. I think if I have to go to all of this trouble just for misery it's not worth it.

Very, very sorry. And I'd appreciate no insults. Other projects and stuff on this forum have had the same thing happen to them, and I don't see the starters getting insulted or anything like that. I'd like to bring a few examples but I don't want to make anybody feel bad.

Another apology. If anyone wants to do this them self, feel free. I'll edit the post to reflect that.

You're welcome to take this over. Start your own thread. I have other stuff going on right now, and I just don't have the time. Plus, I don't want to go to a lot of trouble just for even more trouble. I'm very sorry.

Another thing to keep in mind is that unless you planned to use it wired, you're going to be a bit up a creek. The original Airport card will only connect to WEP in OS 9. Tiger gets you basic WPA support. If you're smart, your home network is probably WPA2. My work uses WPA2/802.11x enterprise, and an Airport card can't even SEE it(I've also started having issues with not connecting using SL on my MBA recently).

I've also discovered that many modern WiFi routers, even if you have security turned all the way off, won't allow 802.11b clients to connect at all! I had to spin up an original "graphite UFO" AirPort base station to get my plain -11b clients to connect.

I just attached a second router to my modern one that runs wep. so its on a separate network. set it to run in b/g only mode. So all old mac connect to it only and new macs connect to wirelss n or AC.

Okay, gonna see if I can do this with my "PDQ" PowerBook G3, running Mac OS 9 with Classilla and Mac OS X 10.2 with Camino. Already imported my latest digital camera pics to iPhoto 1.1.1.

I'll use my iPhone solely for phone calls, text messaging, and photo/video. (I mean, I *COULD* carry around my ancient point-and-shoot, pocketable camera, and I *COULD* use an ancient flip phone; but why not use one device that fits easily in my pocket? And a majority of my contacts also use modern iPhones, so iMessage-over-data instead of old-fashioned text messages and FaceTime Audio instead of actual cell phone calls are the norm. It would confuse my family if they couldn't reach me via those.)

Verified that I can log in to my email from Camino, that's the only "really important" thing. Worst case, I can live without anything else. But, while MacRumors forums are painfully slow, they do run on Camino. (I can read, but not log in, on Classilla.)

And just for grins, I now have a "Magic Mouse" running with it - Bluetooth provided by a D-Link DWB-120M plugged in to a USB CardBus card. And WiFi via a Lucent WaveLAN Gold card. (Which is recognized as "true blue AirPort" in Mac OS 9, but requires third-party drivers in Mac OS X...)

Interesting-although it's slow I can log-in to MR and post from Classilla using my 9600. I've not tried on too many computers, but I actually found browsing MR and most other sites to be perfectly doable and not that slow on a single 1.25 MDD.

No need to apologize. This is something you decided to do and therefore you owe no one anything. It was a great idea but not something to waste the rest of your life on.

I remember @bunnspecial was more than happy to tell me how easy it is to get Tiger on an unsupported non-FireWire iBook Clamshell... Although there is truth to what he said, I've always doubted it's such an easy process. Certainly not impossible though.

Perhaps you can find a later model iBook Clamshell with FireWire or a PowerBook G3 Pismo for the G3 challenge.
