I always hear about crappy home buttons but have never - in any iPhone I've owned or my family members have owned (roughly 25-30 phones, not a large sample but still) - experienced any issue with a home button.

Do people push these things hard or something? I personally like the home button - makes it easier to pop the screen on and off when the phone is lying on a desk without having to reach on the side....that said, if they added some functionality I wouldn't be opposed to losing the physical button in favor a capacitive fingerprint reader.

my iPhone 4s has the home button not responsive. I had the 3gs with no such issue. so that's a 50% failure rate for me.

I often wonder the same as, the same with the connector..... like "the 30-pin broke" and "the magnets are far better" type comments, but there is no excuse for being clumsy..and blaming something else as a cover up. But i agree, the magnets are better :)

Personally, i hate touch-capacitive buttons, of "accidentally" pressing these by mistake. A physical button is far more better.

I've been a die hard Apple fan for years (every iteration of iphone since 3g and numerous macs along the way). I even worked at Apple for half a year. It's not that Apple isn't still an excellent company but the competition is now incredibly good! I will be one of the first in line to get the Galaxy S4. I NEVER expected to leave the Apple ecosystem but I'm outta here. GS4 dead on arrival.....hardly!

Agreed

not leaving apple as have an ipad but the S4 to me fits my needs in every single area. It blows what the iphone 5 has away...and i'm not convinced the 5S will make much difference.

I'm on contract until next year so I'll be sitting this round out (with my GS3). But I think the new features that Samsung have added to this phone is mind boggling. Plus throw in a bigger/better screen, better camera, better processor, more RAM, plus the the device is thinner!?

People can use all the excuses they want:

-It's not pure Android
-Cheap plastic
-Same "ugly" look
-Marketing budget
-Too big

I'm sure I missed some others, but regardless it's one hell of a phone. Bottom line is: This is great time to be an Android user right now with all the choices out there.

I was in a similar situation except working at Apple.
I still love Apple Computers and will always be interested in getting the latest models but with phones its another story.
I've been happily using my Note II and I don't miss the iOS eco system at all.

Although I won't upgrade to the S4, I will be interested in the Note III when it's announced.

As for the cheap plastic argument I hear from many people, I feel it's really a moot point as most people use phone cases to protect the phone anyways so you never really see or feel the metal casing.
I personally would rather have a plastic case and have the option to open the back and change the battery and micro SD card then have a metal closed back.

I think the OP has a point with the fan base.

A lot of devoted iPhone users will upgrade regardless of what Apple releases. I don't think there are that many S3 owners that will unless they have an upgrade available.

As far as an upgrade I think its just as big if not bigger then the 4S to 5. It has a bigger screen while making the phone small unlike the iPhone that just got thinner. It has a bigger battery even though it got thinner unlike the iPhone. It's seems it will have a better radio (not positive on that yet). Screen ppi got better unlike the iPhone. Additional sensors added unlike the iPhone, including internal sensors which fitness people like myself can appreciate.

Then it got the same stuff as the iPhone. Better processor blah blah, more ram, better camera, etc etc.

Here is the big thing. It has better software and features! I'm using an iPhone 4S because the 5 can't do anything more then my iPhone. Sure it can do things faster with LTE and a faster processor but I'm rarely sitting around wishing my phone was faster. I feel as if I have no incentive to upgrade, so I haven't. My employer buys me phones, all I have to do is say "buy me a new phone please", doesn't cost me anything yet I'm still using the 4S. I'm patiently waiting for the 5S hoping for some software innovation.

Yes. This upgrade is significantly bigger than 4S > 5. I think the upgrade from 4S to 5 just felt bigger since iPhones had looked exactly the same for two full years :D

S3 to S4 is definitely a bigger update than 4S to 5. And the new TouchWiz versus iOS 6? Fuhgetaboutit. Samsung added more features than iOS 6 added, and they did it to an already more-featureful-than-iOS Android OS!

Note the higher PPI count despite it being a larger screen, among the other major changes:

I was among those that thought the new features were all gimmicks, till I saw this video.

I think this comparison picture belongs here.

Note the change in screen size, resolution, significantly larger battery size, thinness (no Apple S phone ever got thinner nor offered a larger battery), the addition of an IR blaster, less weight (no Apple S phone ever got lighter), different dimensions (again, no Apple S phone ever was sized differently), new colors, and etc.

Note also the whopping jump up in higher PPI. Not even the iPhone 4S-to-5 improved the PPI count.

I wonder how long it will take apple to take out the whole bragging about retina display on their page. Like they did with the Mac (virus)

Lol at samsung thinking that they have enough of a dedicated fanbase to introduce an incremental upgrade after all of the hype. Everyone that I know that has a galaxy s3 would switch to another android phone in a heartbeat. Ball is in Apple's court now.

incremental upgrade ? Then the 4s->5 was a non update?

S3->S4 is actually a nice upgrade just as big as from S2-> S3

What did you want the phone to do? It has an improved camera, an improved screen, an improved processor, and is overall better.

I just don't get what people expect the next phones to do.

That is like word for word what the iPhone 5 buyers said about the iPhone 5.

I meant in defense of the incremental update comment.

Oh.

My bad.

I think that, sometimes, incremental updates are necessary. Even looking at software, you get some incremental updates. Windows Vista to Windows? Lion to Mountain Lion?

People overestimate the need for new.
