My issue has usually been BIOS settings that are supposed to work, don't seem to or are missing from my BIOS. I have a Z97X-UD5H w/i7 4770K, which is an insanely popular Hackintosh Mobo. Yet exactly following other's builds, never seems to work past installing the OS. I've tried different video cards including the popular GT-750SC which is currently THE recommended card to get.

I just got insanely frustrated with the entire experience, which for an avid computer tinkerer, is very hard to do.

I have Z87x-UD3H had that same chip in it until I dropped back to i5. Not much in the BIOS that needs changing from my memory if it serves me well at this time, make sure you are booting in EFI mode no compatibility turned on in there, turn off virtulization, SATA mode for hard drive and that is it I think. Choose iMac 14,2 for the model install clover and you should be good to go. What exactly were the errors you were getting?

I wasn't getting an error so much as when I booted off the clover thumbdrive to boot into 10.11 that the screen would go grey (expected), then fade to black, then back to grey, then fade to black. It did that repeatedly until it just sat on grey for a couple hours before I gave up.

The install portion worked fine, I just couldn't boot off the newly installed drive to do my post config.

I tried creating the thumbdrive with and without the nvidia option enabled.

Under the clover boot options, I also tried both nvdisable on and off. My last attempt I spent an entire weekend trying to get it running.

I went so far as unplugging all my USB devices and all my hard drives except for one SSD. And the thumbdrive was in a USB2 port.

As I said, I could boot and run the installer.. but after the install was done, I rebooted off the thumbdrive and selected the new install, I'd just get the grey to black to grey to black mess.

edit: there's no XMP option for me to select in bios (due to Kingston HyperX ram not having XMP profiles), and no VT-d option to disable as the K series chips don't support VT-d.

Put the usb stick into the computer then mount the ESP partition on it to edit the config.plist in the Clover directory, find the kernel flags/options however it is named and put a -v there save the file boot the machine from it. With the F12 key UEFI: USB Drive Name option when the clover screen comes up choose your installed system you will boot in text mode so when it fails you will see exactly why. Take screen shot of that head over to the Insanelymac.org and make post there are many people there who can help, make sure to do a signature with all the hardware included in the machine or include this information in the post.

That’s a very impressive machine! How much did that cost to build?

Sorry for the delayed response, been busy with work and haven't spent much time on macrumors lately. Anyway, it wasn't too bad (somewhere around $1500). I usually purchase parts over a period of time / pick up something here and there when there's a good price (e.g. every now and then Newegg runs a promo on a Seasonic PSU for literally 50-60% off, and there was a (if I remember correctly) black Friday sale on the 4930K a year ago for like $430). You can save a pretty nice chunk of change purchasing all the parts this way.

The midrange (GTX980 successor) NVidia Pascal has been spotted in transit. The manifest list says it will have water cooling by default. Won't fit in a cMP so I doubt OSX drivers will be available from NVidia until Apple uses the tech, which is doubtful.
Nvidia has explicitly helped Hackintosh people in the past (e.g. adding 'nv_drv=1' to /Extra/boot.plist), so I think they're not doing their WebDrivers just for MacPros.
I don't have any hard numbers at hand, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Hackintosh install base has exceeded cMPs.

That wouldn't surprise me either I'd also bet the upward trend will steepen in the next couple years cMP's aren't getting newer.

1. They've also removed the hardware check, which is great for people who have eGPUs.
2. Do you think the number of Hackintoshes exceeded the number of classic Mac Pros before or after the release of the new Mac Pro?

Hola folks!

Thought you guys might be interested in a couple videos that I have posted to my YouTube channel.

Part 1 deals with replacing my late 2012 iMac with a 2009 Mac Pro and upgrading it.

Part 2 deals with sorting out crashing issues with it and me replacing it with a faster Hackintosh.

Whilst part 2 doesn't have a ton of benchmarks in it, I think you guys might be interested in it as it shows the advantages of a fast Hackintosh compared to a 12 Core 2009 Mac Pro. Especially with regards to using Final Cut Pro X for video editing.

^^ Thanks Todd, I really enjoyed those videos.
I had to shed a tear though, due to the premium we pay for all those various upgrade parts up here in Canada. :(

any tips for getting a hack to run on my 5820K + MSI X99S Krait system? I can't get the installer to even boot up, the computer reboots itself. I've tried pulling all the extra stuff out, using usb 2.0 etc Any help would be appreciated

Figured I would post up as well. This is my Mac Mini hackintosh.

Mod is mostly done with the exception of cooling and wifi.

Cooling: Replacing the Macbook Pro fan with the 12v mac mini fan and repurposing the MBP fan as a secondary case fan
Wifi: Attempting to internalize the wifi antennas

Specs:
Asus H81T/CSM thin mini itx
Haswell Core i5 4570T
12GB ddr3 1600
250GB evo 850 SSD

Is a hackintosh legal?
At best, its a legal grey area. At worst its illegal. Apple has only legally pursued companies that have tried to directly sell hackintoshes and has not pursued any websites or users who build or provide instructions for hackintoshes.

Since hachintoshing is basically only possible on custom built desktops, the number of people doing it are so tiny that Apple simply doesn't care as they aren't really losing any money to it.

I guess we can still hope there will be support via webdrivers. There is no watercooling, but also there is less power requirements compared to former models, so if I got this right you should be able to run that card in a cMP without needing an additional PSU. So Pascal should be a nice upgrade for these machines as well. And of course for hackintoshes! So NVIDIA, please continue your support - I am also sitting on the fence and will definetly buy a Pascal card if it runs well on my hack!

Except that it's a myth hat Nvidia supports anything beyond some Kepler models. Anything more advanced isn't running on a native driver and these terrible bugs keep turning up. See the GTX 1080 thread for links.
