I haven’t been able to post something like this for a while! Picked up a base 13’ M4 this week in Midnight. Last Mac purchase was a 2012 Core 2 Duo Mini, still running, but needed something portable and up to date for business. Hoping this also lasts me a good number of years. Not really ‘played’ with it yet, straight to Photoshop to finalize some files for print, but very impressed. Will be joining an M2 iPad. Yay.

I have a MBP 16 m1pro since 10/2022 that I have never heard the fans. I like the screen size, but the weight and the size is a problem. I ordered an Air 15 M4 32/1TB in midnight. Expected delivery on Tuesday. Read many things about it, like some people telling it is awesome, others telling that a 14 Pro would be much better (it was only a 190e diference with same specs). But I tested a 14 and it’s just too small for me in terms of screen.

Waiting….

I ordered a 15" Macbook Air 24GB/512GB in Midnight. What was strange was I thought it would be well into next week before it would be delivered. Came home and saw a box at my door. Now I did order a sweatshirt from the large online company that begins with "A". But when I picked up the box it was definitely heavier than a sweatshirt should be.

Turns out it was my Macbook Air. Strange in that every time something from Apple has been delivered to me, I've always had to sign for it. But this time it was just dropped off apparently. Not that I am complaining, I would have had to make special arrangements like meeting up with the courier or having someone else sign for it. But I got it now and I am happy.

I went with the 15" since that is the size I am used to now in laptops mainly due to my aging eyes. So far I am liking it.

I just ordered a Best Buy Geek Squad Certified Open Box 13" M3 MacBook Air 24 / 512 GB Starlight for the wife. The open box M3 24/512 pricing is significantly cheaper than the M4 16/512 edu pricing at Apple so I figured I'd give it a shot. This is complete overkill for her, as she would be fine with 16/256 (or even 8/256) for the time being, but I wanted 512 GB storage since we hopefully will be keeping this one for a very long time, past 2030 for sure unless it breaks before that. Hopefully the open box is good as new, but if not, I'll just return it and get an M4 in the Back-To-School Promotion in June.

This will be replacing her 2017 MacBook Air 8/256. Actually even that is mostly OK for her except for one main thing (aside from some lags here and there), which is lack of h.265 HEVC support. We receive videos for our kids' activities and they sometimes are now h.265 HEVC only. The 2017 MBA cannot play these at all.

There were some good deals on the M2 16/256 last year, but I decided to wait for deals on the M3/M4 for a few reasons:

1) M2 is 3 years old already, so future OS support will be significantly reduced. M3 is only 1 year old, and M4 just came out.
2) M2 does not support hardware AV1 decode acceleration. M3 and M4 both support this.
3) I was hoping for a good deal on a 512 GB model. However, there were no great deals on an M2 16/512, only 8/512.

BTW, one small detail for pricing is that the 256 GB models only come with a single 30 W USB-C adapter. The 512 GB models come with a dual 35 W or single 70 W USB-C adapter. To get one of those with the 256 GB model means spending another CA$30 / US$20.

I've just ordered, for the princely sum of £40.44 delivered, an A1465 11.6" MBA. It will be needing a new battery, and is a bit scuffed, but I'll call that a win. I like this form factor, and have two Asus notebooks of the same size and resolution, as well as the 2011 i7 version of the MBA.

Well, the description said High Sierra, but the About... screenshot says Big Sur, and the full screen looks like Monterey! So the answer is...not a clue.
It's here, but a 2013 as opposed to the 2015 I'd persuaded myself it was. Still a great machine for the money.
And it was running Big Sur!

New SSD fitted (500GB), new battery incoming, nice little machine.
Getting really nostalgic reading this, and I would so LOVE a smaller MacBook again.
But as I recall the 2018 gold I traded in, when I bought this 2024 M3 Midnight MBA, was really slow.
So it was with a heavy heart I packed it down and said goodbye to it 🥲
Unfortunately. performance rule over nostalgia when it really comes down to it.
The battery on my old wasn’t that bad - think 60ish.

But especially a new SSD will speed it up for you.
A bit envious here, why can’t Apple release a small with M-chip? 🤬 Cook.

Performance not an issue for me, my real-world computing needs could be met by a Celeron netbook. I just play with this old stuff, really. This is actually my newest-ever Mac! :D

Got the unit. Original box a bit roughed up, but machine is mint. Battery came drained, but only 4 battery cycles, 100% health. 8 months left on the warranty, and Apple says they cannot extend the warranty to one year on any open box, Best Buy or otherwise. I've had the same experience before with an open box Apple TV. Apple would not extend the warranty.

Price: CA$1399 / US$1010 for 24 / 512 GB 13" M3 MacBook Air.

I'm not sure if I'll keep it or return it and get an M4 edu 16/512 for CA$1549 / US$1119 instead, but with possible gift card for the back to school promotion. She doesn't need 24 GB, and with the credit card extended warranty, I would get 2 years warranty on the M4.

Ordered MBA M4 Silver 13" 24/512, with a $95 trade-in discount for an ancient AW (surprised they gave me anything).

I am coming from a 2012 MBP with, get this, 4 GB RAM. I couldn't even use it to buy the new MBA due to its inability to do, .... well, ... most things. I named this 2012 relic "AI"(Always Inefficient).

I really hope I notice some speed improvements. ;)

Just pulled the trigger on an M4 13" Air:

Only laptop I own is the 2015 13" 'Pro' . . . She is being gifted to a friend, who is (expectedly) very delighted.

I have a number of Seminars this Summer, and my M4 IPP--while excellent--just doesn't offer me the granularity of control that I feel I need to apply on-the-daily.

Probably overkill for how I have historically used my mobile comps, yet it just feels Right :)

The Pro Apps Bundle will probably end-up being more applicable to my Studio use; but "When in Rome...".

More to come....

Seminars as a student or educator or no? I'm asking just because in the USA, the Back-To-School Promotion likely starts next month.

That's what I'm waiting for in Canada.

Educator.

I could have waited, but this lappy will be put to much use from the end of May onward.

The District's new Dells are ok. However, I'm in the process of doing much more than just Distric-related work. This purchase finally made sense :)
