Just put an order in for a 2.6 i7 MM with the 1TB HDD along with 16GB Kingston RAM and a 256GB Sammy SSD to be added by the retailer.

I will be driving my late 2009 27" iMac using Target Display Mode. I've given up on trying to do any work with Lightroom/Aperture and photo editing on the iMac because of the constant freezes and crashes and this was the main reason for getting the Mini. And it means that I can use the iMac for iWork type stuff and syncing the iPad leaving the MM to be a dedicated photo workstation.

Can't wait.

Which retailer is going to add the SSD ?

I want to have somebody do it on mine

Do places like bestbuy geeksquad do that ?

Any other place I can take or send the mini to have an SSD installed , other than apple

I'm in the UK. I'm using a local Authorised Apple outlet so AppleCare won't be void (for the Apple components).

How much in American dollars are you paying to have that done

Total cost is £1236 including fitting and AppleCare, which equates to ~$1870 at today's exchange rates.

Over this side of the pond, the 2.6GHz i7 1 TB HDD MM equates to ~$1150, and then including fitting, 16GB Kingston RAM equates to ~$218 and the 256GB Sammy SSD is ~$309.

You'd have to pay Airmail too though, Che ;)

My very first Mini

Just got my very first Mac Mini - 2.3Ghz Quad Core i7!

I'm a long time apple device user, starting with the PowerMac portable and a Lisa. Been using several MB, MBP, MBA and iPod/iPhone/iPads.

Anyways, took me sometime to figure out an Apple desktop. But with the advise of some awesome members here, and after considering an iMac, I decided to go MM. Will upgrade this to 16GB ram and the Fusion drive option.
I'm not a multimedia maven, but a software developer in my company's IT dept. So, I'm looking forward to using this to host several VM's for my tasks.

Mahalo everyone in here for the great advice.

New to the forum here! I am a pro photographer and was looking to replace my 2009 MBP 2.53 with an actual desktop machine. I just ordered:
From Apple-
2012 2.6 Mini
27" TBD

From OWC-
240G EXTREME Pro 6G
Data doubler
16GB Memory

This should be a slight upgrade from my MBP. I will still use the MBP on travel and during shoots but no I finally have a home for work. I will prob end up getting a second TBD when funds come open.

Super PUMPED for my first mini!!
:D

Got my new toy in on Monday.

2.6 i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD. UPS just dropped off a 240GB Mushkin Chronos Deluxe SSD, that is going into an empty GoFlex case and connected via the Thunderbolt adapter as a scratch drive. Old GoFlex drive as my TM backup drive. System is fast, looks good on my 27" LG mounted, and my iPad mounted (HoverBar).

This machine is going to be my Blizzard gaming / and my BluRay encoding machine for my own ATV3 and iPad rips rig.

Im happy, the Synology is next according to SWMBO. :D

What do you mean by scratch drive

I wanted more [fast] storage in the mini, and just am not at the point where I want to crack open (its not skill level) the mini and put another drive in it. (if I do, it's going to be an identical drive to what I have in there already to do a RAID 0) I [will] use it to rip/encode from once this batch of movies I'm working on is done.

I'm also curious of read/write speeds of some different drives with different enclosures.

I'm sure that using a SSD instead of lets say a USB 3.0 7200 desktop drive aren't going to be that beneficial in the real world, but I haven't bought any computers or [major] parts in the past 5 years, so I'm just going crazy overboard.

I'll also move my Downloads, Movies, Music, and Pictures directories over to the 'scratch drive' because between my pictures and iTunes alone (I only keep music locally, and what video is on my iOS devices) are around 150GB of data. That makes me not want to have to uber-manage things on the smaller [internal] disk.

Is it stupid, probably, did I spend more than I needed, sure, but will things work out to be faster for me, well, I'll know soon enough...I'm just playing. I'm out of work for another 6 weeks from a broken clavicle, so I have time to muck with stuff.

Anyone have thoughts? Wait, we all do, anyone have thoughts that they'd like to share? I'm a big boy, I can take it.

Wrong.
The differences between an SSD and an HDD (when connected via USB3) are dramatic and measurable.

It's VERY important that the external enclosure used support UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol). When my IBM SSD was new, I was getting read speeds of 410mbps when connected via a USB3/SATA docking station.

A couple of external devices that can yield such speeds:

Hi everyone! I am new to the forum. I thought I'd introduce myself by posting in this thread. I have been an iPhone user for a few years (since the iPhone 4 was released - I'm now using an iPhone 5), but I am happy to say that I ordered my very first Mac earlier this morning from the Apple online store! I ordered a Mac Mini with:
-2.6 Ghz Quad-core I7
-16 GB of RAM
-1 TB Fusion drive
I also went ahead and ordered the USB superdrive because I'm one to always need CD/DVD drive support on a computer. I am super excited. I have always been a Windows user and now that my Dell laptop seems to be on it's last leg I thought it is a good time to get something new and refreshing.

hehehe, you were right. Stuff just happens so fast now. No waking up the dock on occasion. I took it out of the GoFlex enclosure I had over thunderbolt and stuck it in the mini. She's happier now. Much much happier. I have a second monitor up now, I have a Command Center.

Get this instead:
Pioneer Bluray Burner

I'm rocking one on my mini and my buddy's new mini. They work like a champ for ripping and encoding our BD collection into iTunes.

As for the Windows switch, it's not so bad, especially with an idea of a *nix environment. I just put Win 8 Pro on a Bootcamp partition for all of my home theater programming software. I can't figure out if I'm going to use parallels or not. You can't install win 7/8 onto your Fusion Drive. I'll bet good money you could install it on a USB3 thumbdrive no problem.

Hi all, just got my new mini hooked up and am quite pleased.

. . . also using the Dell U2412m monitor. I am using a mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable to connect the monitor, and have had none of the blinking display issues (knock on wood).

I have the same display as Bill.

When I first connected it, I had the blinking issues with the monitor as well. Turned out, I reduced the resolution (was hooked up to my macbook until the mini arrived) and voila! blinking stopped.

I had set it up at 1900 x 1200 or some such. It would blink out every 5 or 8 minutes for about three seconds. I checked in System Prefs and was told recommended resolution was lower (on my macbook) so I took that suggestion and blinking stopped.

Here's my question, I am getting a new sound (alert) now that I am using the mini, one I wasn't getting before on the macbook. It's not new mail. Any ideas what it could be?

I just purchased my 2.3 mini! Well I didn't, my wife bought me one for my birthday. It's replacing my aging Core2Quad Hackintosh which I just reloaded Win7 onto and took to school (work).

I have 2 3tb drives, a Lacie Minimus which works perfectly and a Seagate drive in a Mediasonic enclosure that keeps disconnecting. I've seen the Plugable recommended several times on the this forum but on the Amazon page it states, "*NOTE* 2012 Mac Mini and 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina Display are currently not recommended for use with this product, pending latest updates from Apple. "

Does anyone actually have this hub, a 2012 Mini, and can confirm that it indeed works?

I'm not trying to be an elitist here but I'm honestly asking this question, why are people so afraid with opening their mac mini and installing a new drive? I got a new mac mini a few days ago, popped it open, put SSD in, close. It will not void any warranty and let's just say I was having some issues and wanted to avoid Apple telling me it's because of my aftermarket HDD, I could easily take it out in 15 minutes and put the original back in. I have early 2011 15 MBP which has aftermarket drive and RAM and I've taken it to the apple store to have something replaced, nobody even questioned the aftermarket components for 1 second. Don't be afraid, it takes 15-30 minutes to do it. This is a perfect screwdriver set: http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/100087...toreId=10051&N=5yc1v&R=100087664#.UWqyvKtAQ6E it includes ALL CORRECT sizes you'll need to do the job and you won't strip anything.

Hi guys

Just ordered my first ever mac computer. In have ordered a 2.3Ghz Quad Core I7 Mini with 4Gb Ram and the fusion drive. Also added a wireless keyboard and wireless trackpad for input and the apple SuperDrive. Should be with me next week sometime. Can't wait to get it setup and linked to my iPhone and iPad. Should look good on my LED TV hopefully.

Anyone have a main monitor plugged into HDMI, and a secondary using a TB to HDMI cable that's vertical....

I'm trying to make my second monitor veritcal, but before I take the time to unmount it, etc, I tested it....no worky worky. Ideas?

----------

Unfortunately that's American and I'm in Britain. What's wrong with the SuperDrive?

well poop. My only gripe with the Super Drive is for $20 you can have a BD drive. DVDs are so 1999

I've posted this reply before and I'll post it again.

I believe that when plugable.com first started selling USB/SATA docks, they were using a Lucent controller chip that had problems with some USB3-equipped Macs. This is why you see the "note" posted on the amazon page regarding USB3 Macs.

They have since changed to ASMedia controller chips, which work much better with Macs. But I believe they forgot to delete the note on their amazon page regarding USB3 Macs.

The following is from my personal experience since January:
I have a plugable.com USB3/SATA "lay-flat" dock with an ASMedia 1053 controller chip inside.
I plugged in an Intel 520 series SSD, and boot my 2012 i7 Mini via USB3. I run it many hours a day in this configuration.
I have experienced NO problems whatsoever with this setup. No "drops" from the USB bus, no sleep problems, everything runs "as expected".
Although I've noticed that as I used the SSD speeds have dropped a little since new, when I first installed and tested the drive I was getting read speeds of 410mbps and write speeds in the neighborhood of 247mbps (using the BlackMagic app). That's pretty snazzy for USB3.

Just ordered my 2.6 i7 Mini :) For my new home 2/4K video editing/grading station. Will have 16Go Kingston PnP and Sammy Pro 840 SSD.

Until the next september I plan to build/test it around Thunderbolt storage (LaCie 5Big) and video interface (BMD Studio Express). I will post some review here !

It's a kind of experimentation for me because in my town there is some great professionals, but they use Quantal, Marquise or Resolve. And mostly exclusively "truck computer" home-studios.

Not entirely new but I recently got a hold of a Mini that came stock with 4 GB RAM and a 5400RPM harddrive. These quickly got replaced with 16 GB RAM and a 128GB SSD from Samsung. This thing flies. Boots in no time and is very responsive.

The hardest part was not getting to the harddrive but instead seating the new drive. I had to put in the SSD while looking up into the inside of the Mini because I couldn't get the two screws to fit in their respective hole.

Just got my dual 2.6ghz with the Fusion drive yesterday and hooked it up to a 23" AOC 1080p display, loving it so far. Will be upgrading the RAM to 16gb on my next paycheck as well as looking for a USB blu-ray drive.

Want to get a mini, but not sure if new ones will be announced at WWDC in June.

At this point I would wait

I bought mine in feb so I won't be too upset if a new one comes out in June

The only time I see the spinning ball is when the external drive wakes up
