Thanks!

rMBP 15.4" 8GB 512 SSD refurb returned

A long time PC user, I finally decided the time was right to take a bite of the forbidden fruit and purchase a Retina Macbook Pro. I had always heard good things of Apple's refurbished products, so I took advantage of saving $300+ and purchased a refurbished 15.4" 8GB 512GB SSD rMBP from Apple.ca.

Shipping from Concord, Ontario, it took only 3 days to arrive instead of the estimated 5-6 days.

When I booted up the Macbook last night I was amazed with the display and quite satisfied with my purchase.

That changed after about 10 minutes when a crackling and popcorn-like sound began when the computer was downloading and installing software. With a SSD I expected whisper-quiet operation and this sound was what I had come to expect from a PC harddrive processing a resource-intensive task.

Needless to say, I phoned Apple and they gave me a shipping label to return the product no questions asked. Although they didn't ask any questions, I expressed my dissatisfaction with their product.

Now, some of you might say you get what you pay for, but I'd respectfully disagree.

Of course, Apple did suggest I could reorder the product again once the return went though. They couldn't do a straight exchange because they were unable to guarantee a replacement product would be available (because it was a refurb).

Now, I'm wondering if I should spend the extra $300-400 and purchase brand new. But, if the problem existed once, could it occur again in the future - well beyond the 14 day return or 1 year warranty?

Perhaps I should jump down to the cMBP 15" and forget about the joy I found in the retina display. What do you suggest?

So I just took the plunge. Got the midrange 16 gig / 512 gig flash / 2.7 quad i7 / GeForce 650M.

Never had a discrete graphics card before...this should be interesting.

Just topping up battery and organizing some files on old macs...can't wait to try this out.

just brought a new bag

I have had my cMacbook for a month now and love it but I just purchased a STM Hood Backpack and love this bag. Really awesome and comfy to wear, secures my cMacbook just fine

No, Apple pays the duty etc for you. It will arrive with all charges paid to your doorstep - you don't need to to worry about anything.

h1 guys, i can't decide to buy 2012 rMBP new for 1950$ from amazon (it's shipped from data vision video shop) or to take Refurb model directly from Apple, has anybody bought it from Apple, are there screen problems in it ? also what manufacturer of display in refurb? ( it's really important for me because i live in Russia and there is no official Apple store -> there are problems with exchange of Apple products)

Really need an advice, and also i can't find any refurb rMBP except of starting model, where can i take an upgraded refurb?))

thx..

I would just purchase another refurb after the refund is processed. I normally only buy refurbs and am always satisfied. I just got a refurb RMBP and it's fine.

and is it possible to get tax back ,buying it online it's 100 $

so it would be 1885$ via 1960$ new on amazon

can't decide (( is there an apple warranty if i buy from amazon?

Anyone notice BTO rMBPs are a little slow off the production line. I ordered a loaded 2.8 Monday and its still being prepared. I do have the thunderbolt cable and firewire adapter, however :)

Update, just went to the preparing for shipment state.

Just received my 15" 2.6/8/512 mid 2012 rMBP and it is awesome.

2 charge cycles on the battery and it's a Samsung screen :)

Typing this on my new 15" retina… I already love that thing. Got it from ebay, with about 30 cycles on the battery. It arrived this morning.

My previous MBP was a generation 1 with 1.5 gig of RAM and a 1.83GHz CoreDuo (32bit!), almost 7 years old, which I got as a replacement for a Powerbook that really broke down on me badly (as a last gen product! – I won't ever complain about 1st gens anymore!)
…let's say the new one's a liiittle bit faster ;)

Also, on the old one the display was dying (candy apple red when warming up), the top case was flaking badly, the keyboard had lost function for a few keys from a spill, the background illumination of the kb had been broken by a service center when they repaired something else, one of the fans needed to be replaced, it had a dead battery and the ODD could only play CDs, but no longer read DVDs or burn anything.

Well, onward to new adventures! :D

PS: Samsung screen and SSD \o/

Just a warning/FYI. The refurb rMBP's can have IR and an LG screen. Apple didn't test that when reselling a device someone likely returned for IR.

I just ordered a refurb 2.3 rMBP for pickup on Fri @ the Apple store with Applecare and I'm pretty excited.

I'll do the screen manufacturer check and IR tests but I hope everything is OK. If not, I'm sure Apple will help me find a good solution as they always have done in the past.

Stoked about my purchase. Can't wait for Friday.

It could be in the refurb pile for a multitude of reasons . Refurb here, Samsung screen and SSD here.

It's still an absolutely beautiful machine. Far better than a cMBP even with the IR (which is seriously only noticeable on neutral grey colors)

just ordered a 15" cMBP with 2.6, 8 gb ram, and higher resolution anti glare. The education discount helped - i can't wait to pick it up!

Congratulations, it's a great machine. I don't mean to get your hopes up, but sometimes the ETA on the website is very conservative. I ordered both of mine online, was told they would arrive at the Apple Store in 3 days, but both were ready for pick up the next day (!). YMMV though, my Apple Store (NJ) is one state away from the Refurb center (PA), so that might have explained it.

Boom!!! Same here.

Thanks for the heads up and I'll double check it's status before I head out there.

Edit: On my order status they bumped the available date up one day to tomorrow so I may actually get it sooner than expected.

I don't suppose anyone has ordered a base rMBP 13" (or any base config MBP) recently from the UK Apple Store website? I ordered at lunch time today, pretty much got 'preparing for shipment' right away, with a delivery estimate for tomorrow!

Do Apple really offer next day delivery of these (I know it says 24hr dispatch but next day delivery is impressive)? I have always purchased Macbooks when they are first launched, so I am use to 1-2 weeks delivery times.

* I purchased the rMBP 15" at launch last summer, then sold it a couple of months ago after getting a really cheap MBA on eBay, which I have now also sold lol, and I am returning to the rMBP (13") this time, following its price drop..
