Looks great. You mind sharing where you got the carbon fiber sticker? I'm looking for one.

Thanks

So...I've just dumped my macbook air 11" 1.8i7 (4gb, 256ssd) because it's not 'quite' up to it for the RAW image processing I do today...and I wanted something new because I'm a technogeek..

Due to all the debate around what processors and memory combinations to get I ordered myself a 13" Macbook Pro 2.6i5, 16gb, 512ssd...but the order time is around 1-2 weeks..I wasn't too sure if I really needed 16gb but thought it was future proofing..

but then I got to thinking that I generally upgrade every 2 years anyhow so why future proof and I'll not knowing what will be out there in two years but knowing it would be a must have then maybe i went too far??

Well I walked into the Apple store today and got talking to one of their reps who reckoned I wouldn't need the 16gb but gave the option to buy the 8gb version today and then IF it wasn't up to scratch over the next 14 days to bring it back for free by which time the other one would be here..strangely they had the 2.8ghz version in stock so I took that one..If I find it's ok then I'll cancel the one I have on order...
..
I'll let you know how I get on with the 8gb version..

P

Even if you replace in 2 years, think 16GB will be good for resale value versus the 8gb configuration, but that is up to you!

Mavericks doesn't help with understanding how much RAM you're using and how much would therefore be beneficial. From the posts I've read regardless of how much you have it uses as much as it can and even caches files.

I'll give it a few days of using it to see if 8GB is enough for my RAW editing usage. If so then I'll keep it and cancel the 16GB.

Where did you get your wrap?

Ordered my Mbp 13" 2.6/16gb/512gb (UK) on the 21st with a 3-4 week estimate. However estimates have improved to 1-2 weeks for. Hopefully it will be ready for Xmas. Really excited. I already have a lovely knomo 13 inch leather bag to fit it snugly.

Anyone else from the bto waiting club? Considered cancelling to get the estimate reflecting the date

I finally purchased my rMBP 13" (late 2013) 2.6Ghz / 8GB RAM / 512GB SSD a week ago.

I kept going back and forth trying to decide between purchasing the 13" and 15".
Eventually I chose the max stock 13" and am very happy with my decision! The 13" is big enough for me - I found the 15" too big for me! (I was previously a Macbook Air 13" 2011 user until it went for a swim... don't ask)

8GB is more than enough for me (I only have 1 x Windows 8 VM running on occasion.)

The 512GB SSD is perfect, and I have given 100GB of it to my Bootcamp partition. 256GB would've been too tight a squeeze for me.

The 2.6Ghz dual core CPU is powerful! My only concern was going dual core instead of quad core, and have had no performance issues with Final Cut, Photoshop and loads of multitasking going on, including having my Windows 8 VM running when needed.

After using Chrome for a few days, I switched to Safari and loving it! I found Safari to be smoother on scrolling and just generally seemed snapper, and much lighter on battery.

I'm not a heavy gamer, but from the sounds of things the Iris 5100 will do a decent job to do some low-detail gaming. Going to install SC2 on the weekend and play!

My BTO 15inch Ultimate due this Friday, tomorrow

I've got the 13inch 2.8/16gb/512gb 2013 late, already and I'm very please with it, great for size and travel use. It's smaller that my previous MacBook 13inch Air 2011, which was the best laptop I've ever owned, and now succeeded by the 13inch MacBook Pro.

You will get it no problem before Xmas Crazybobbles ;) and an early Merry Xmas too :D

Gadger :)

Nice configuration!

I just ordered a MB Pro Retina 13 for my wife and she's tough on equipment. So how's that skin holding up for you? It looks really nice in the picture.

New rMBP without sales tax

Hi,
I want to buy the ME866LL config, the one without customization and 512GB SSD. I found it discounted at Amazon (1669$ with 10$ promo) but Amazon charges sales tax.
I looked at newegg and they still show the non discounted price (1799$).

Do you know of any online shop that has a discount comparable to amazon but does not charge sales tax?

First ever Mac - hardware

First time poster, first time Mac user.

I'm an IT consultant and have been using Windows PCs for most of my life (starting with GEM windows on a 286 - so, a while). Around 3 years ago I bought myself a Toshiba Portege and my partner a Macbook Air. I wasn't ready to move to a Mac at that point as I was nervous that all the VPN and SAP client s/w I needed would work.

Fast forward to about 6 months ago, and the Macbook Air is still in perfect condition whereas my Tosh has some keys which don't work well, a dodgy spacebar, a broken trackpad and none of the LED lights work. And I looked after it well. So I decided to get a Mac laptop. After reading pages and pages of posts all over the net about image retention I held off. I found the "waiting for Haswell" thread on here and decided to join the queue. So I waited. And waited. And waited. And lo it was released.

Then I saw thread after thread about creaky machines, overheating laptops that lasted an hour before the battery ran out, which was just enough time to use the integrated GPU to drag some windows around a yellowed screen whilst wondering why wifi performance was so slow.

So I waited a bit longer. Then I saw people taking photos of their "yellow screens" with their iPhone and I started to realise that there was a lot of OCD in some of the posts here, and people posting seconds after opening their mac to say that the battery meter didn't say it'd last the next 10 hours etc etc.

So I ordered. I chose 15" (not planning to travel with it; I have an iPad mini for that), 8GB (come on, 16? my current crappy laptop has 2GB and the CPU and disk crap out well before I use all the RAM), 512GB SSD (expensive but I decided 256 wasn't enough). That combo didn't get me the dGPU, which is fine as I didn't want it anyway. I don't actually plan to be a "power/heavy user" so don't care. Ordered it here in Switzerland and specified the British keyboard.

Tracked it. I assumed that it'd come from stock here, and with the misplaced confidence in Swiss QA standards, was expecting something good. Saw that it was in Shanghai airport. Oh well. Wish I was there; it's bloody freezing here. Waited. Shanghai, Amsterdam, Zurich, Basel, my place.

I opened it and before going near the power switch I played with the trackpad - no cracking sounds. I picked it up and shook it, held it by each corner and waved it around, put it down and pressed randomly all over it. Not even the tiniest of creaking sounds. So far so good. Powered it up. White! White screen. No yellow.

The 5th letter (there's a thread here tracking these things!) of my serial string is "Q". It's an LG screen (A019). I've had it two days and it's totally flawless.

But wow. It's a combination of "wow! cool!" and "wtf????" as I grapple with Mavericks after using DOS then Windows for over 20 years. I'll start a new post on that ...

First ever Mac - software

So ... Mavericks. Simple things thwart me. What do you mean pressing backspace doesn't take me to the previous page in Safari? Or the Finder thing? Why are all my folders listed in a muddle with my files? Where *IS* everything?

The trackpad is very cool. I've customised one thing on it, which is to allow a tap to be a click. Life is good. Gentle swipes and I can go back/forward in Safari, bring up the Launcher, the notification centre, whatever it's called when all the windows splay out etc etc. I love the trackpad.

But I want to rename the "Movies" folder to "Films" or "Videos". I'm British. Googled it and it seems I need to edit some hidden type of file. So, feeling brave, I get root access and started to get excited at what I can do and how. Before I know it, I'm cd-ing around the file system, running "find" commands and editing stuff in vi. I used to be a Unix administrator years ago. This is fun! Anyway, found a text translation type of file and changed Movies to Videos, saved it, and blam - it's renamed.

I was using Thunderbird - I'm now trying to use Mail. It's not bad and it imported my mails very well. I was using POP3 but I've joined the 21st century and moved to imap. Means that what I do on my iPad now matches what I do on my laptop. I think (albeit only after 2 days) that I'll stick with Mail.

I was using Firefox - I'm now trying to use Safari. Adblock is almost as good but there are other extensions that I really miss. I'm currently using both and am unsure yet which way I will lean.

Some things still annoy me. I still don't really like the way it orders things in Finder, but without editing all sorts of plist files I've got it pretty much how I'd like, by (weirdly) altering how Spotlight searches ... folders at the top and most other file types un-ticked. Sorting Finder windows by name now seems to be acceptable to me. And some things confuse me, such as closing iTunes the window doesn't close iTunes the app. And installing things ... what? Disk images? Links to the app folder in pop-op windows? I'll get there.

I was very impressed that Facetime and iMessages work well, but still haven't found out how to add custom ringtones or sms tones to my contacts so they match the iPad. Seems it's not possible. Same with Mail - I create a rule so that the icon thingy would bounce on all new mails but it just bounces randomly all the time. On the plus side, I was typing something and it expanded out, matching my iPad text shortcuts. That was a suprise. Good ol' iCloud.

Oh, I'm not really asking for help/tips on the above, as I'm sure I'll figure it out (or start a proper thread); just sharing my experiences as a totally new Mac user.

I think I'm going to like it.

Welcome to the Mac fever! Happy to hear your new Mac is great, as it should be!

Thank you to those who helped me earlier. This is what I bought

So I went to Best Buy wanting to buy a 13" MacBook Pro + retina with the intention of upgrading the RAM from 4 to 8. All with a budget of $1,200. Turns out I couldn't upgrade the RAM without upgrading other features. There was four options: a standard MBP for $999, upgrade in RAM and i7 for $1,299, standard + retina for 1,099, upgrade in RAM and i7 + retina for $1,499. I was a little upset I couldn't choose exactly what I wanted. I went over my budget and chose the $1,299 option and went over my budget. I used a credit card to cover the rest.

Like I mentioned before, I will be using my laptop for designing work. Using software such as: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Parrallel for Revit. So did I make a good purchase tonight? I still haven't opened the box. I guess I am just looking for reassurance from users around here who are far more knowledgeable in all the Mac hardware detail.

Here are the box details:

MacBook Pro 13.3"
2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 with 4MB L3 cache (Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz)
8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
7500GB 5400-rpm hard drive
13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlight glossy widescreen display, 1280 by 800 pixels
Intel HD Graphics 4000
etc.

I am afraid that is not the retina version. :s

Personally, I would go for the latest version, it is much faster, better integrated graphics, no hardisk but ssd which will improve the performance by a lot! and also waaay better screen.

I'm not looking to invest on the retina screen. So I just looked at the apple site and if I make a purchase of the most recent MBP with everything standardized, with the exception of a RAM upgrade to 8, then they would both cost the same amount of $1,299. Would this be a better investment? Which would perform better? Can I upgrade any to all other features on the latest MBP in the future? Feed back from anyone would be appreciated.

Nevermind. I just noticed it's not intel iris graphics too. Man if I want to the latest MBP + the suggested 8GB of RAM I would have to fork out $1,400. Sigh.

So far so good. The icarbon skins seems very durable i had it on my macbook air since i bought it in 2010 and it protected it very well. i just sold my macbook air on ebay before i got my retina and my air still looked new. The carbons are also very easy to clean. I also had the icarbon on my 2010 macbook pro and it held up pretty good and looked great, that color was black on that laptop. They sell them in Black, White and Red.

i would rather buy the 2013 new one with 8GB RAM for the same price, without even thinking about it. Better performance in all the aspects, you will not be able to upgrade because all the parts are soldered but still it will be my choice.
