We picked up a 15" rMBP w/512GB SSD last night for my daughter who's starting her junior year in Graphics Design. Including the free Beats and Applecare, the savings were about $630 so pretty good deal for her. She worked the whole summer to save up the money to buy it and when we got to the store I told her that I'd match her dollar for dollar so she paid half... she was quite a happy camper coming out of the store! I can now get my Macbook Air back that she's used for the first two years of school.

While I was very torn about buying this knowing that new models are coming, she really wanted the Beats more than a newer model, and she's not someone who thinks that the thinnest laptop is the best laptop. I am fearful the next generation MBP will require a lot of dongles to use if they thin it further. Either way, she got a good deal and is happy with it so I came to terms with not waiting. It will be better for her to not have to switch mid-semester and she was told she needed a rMBP for the classes she's taking this semester.

Now to find a suitable external monitor... I'm thinking a 27" 4K that she can also use as a TV/DVD monitor in her college apartment. They seem to be running about $500.

As a student myself, I think she will be happier with the 2015. If the chassis leak is to be believed, then the next rMBP will have only USB-C ports. This will be a major pain in the rear for anyone who has to interact with school computers, work computers and other students, where literally noone will be using USB-C equipment. Congrats on her new Mac.

I highly doubt Apple would go that road, it may have 1 or 2 usb C ports but the rest has to be usual USB 3.0 port. Not only would that be a major pain for everyone at school, it would also be a major pain to get the appropriate printer drivers aso. to work.

USB C equipment is coming sure but it's far from there and no college will go all in with over 100 computers right now and I'm sure Apple is aware of that. If they aren't I guess I'll do the same thing as your daughter and maybe buy the 15 inch 512 gig beast. Even if it's CPU is a bit older now 4 cores in a laptop are still not the norm for whatever reason.

I really kind of hate Apple in general right now, but I'm very much liking my 13 inch macbook pro that I got from the refurb store. I feel like I grabbed a piece of that last, best thing that Apple will ever make.

Up until OWC came out with the SSD upgrades I was under no circumstances going to buy one. But once there was an option to upgrade, I took the plunge.

At least now I know I can upgrade this laptop to grow with me over the years as time goes on.

And then watch, as time goes on ... as Apple completely chokes off any ability to upgrade and any flexibility in OSX. It will soon be a world or ios device-like computers, that are neither flexible or upgradable.

Pulled the trigger this evening when I got homeand found a cheque for £1300 in the post!

MacBook Pro 15" and AppleCare plus beats earphones that will make an excellent birthday present for my brother.

Paid extra to get it tomorrow so I can spend this weekend playing with my first ever Mac

It feels a bit like Christmas Eve at the moment

Good. You got him the perfect balance: An excellent computer. A crappy set of earphones.

OLED sounds nice, but fingerprint reader sounds nicer.

You all kill me. You act as if OLED will be something really distinctive. It won't. I remember the days when it was a choice between active matrix lcd and passive matrix lcd. Now THAT was truly a groundbreaking difference. OLED vs. todays LED won't be even close to that.

I've had my 15" rMBP since last October and loving it! I paired it with this Dell external display: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1106149-REG/dell_p2715q_27_3840x2160_dh.html

It's a great monitor and has plenty of inputs for all kinds of devices. The price moves around quite a bit, and can vary a lot from site to site. It's $509 at B&H but $545 on Amazon. I got it last year for $479 at a local retailer.

Edited to add - Best Buy has it for $500 with free shipping right now. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-27...lack/2438098.p?id=1219630512068&skuId=2438098

The one thing I really miss about the non Apple monitors is that the Apple keyboard brightness control doesn't work with them. If there was somehow a software hack to make it work, I'd be all over a monitor like that Dell.

I'm about to do the same for my son.

The free beats and proven design is why.

I am not a fan of buying the 1st rev of any Apple product , so this years rMBP while tempting, I personally will stay away from

As for monitors, this bad boy can be found for as cheap as $699

well i finally broke and purchased a 13" rMBP on Saturday at Best Buy. Best Buy had it on sale for $150 off and i got the student price for apple care. I picked up the 2.9, 512, 8 gig ram, config. normally $1800. I wish could bump up the ram.

I'm hoping it will do for me for quick edits in FCPX and Photoshop as well as every day stuff. I still have my nMP for my work horse, just wanted something small for the field. Its hard getting used to the screen coming from my 17" that I hardly used because it was so slow. I might try fooling around with it and install an SSD.

Anyway i picked up an incase slim sleeve for it from apple. Seems ok. Might look at other options. Suggestions? What about those plastic hard shells. I looked at it at the apple store and the incase one seemed cheap...

Waiting on the email to go pick up my 15" 2.2Ghz i7/16Gb/256Gb*. I've been running a lot of VM's recently and the product I'm working on now *loves* cores and RAM, even just at small development volumes, so my 13" i5/8Gb was becoming an issue, even though it is plenty fast for any other purpose. The 13" will find a new home with my gf, who has been happy just using her iPad but is starting some college night classes.

*the 256Gb part isn't really an issue I find. My VM's tend to live on a USB3 Samsung SSD that reads/writes around 400Mb/s. Also I've purchased a JetDrive Lite which will live in my SD slot permanently for things that just don't require speed. My Outlook inbox is probably one of my biggest single storage expenditures.

Just curious why you'd get it from Best Buy when Apple has the student price, plus free beats, plus applecare discount... about a $600 savings.

I'm not a student...

Well that explains it. FYI, they didn't ask for any verification when my daughter bought hers. I had with me her tuition receipt, but the Apple guy was like, "no, no, we are good... " when I tried to show it to him. It may be that if we didn't look like a father / daughter student scenario that he might have asked for something, but not sure. There were a lot of MBP / Beats bundles coming out of the back while we were in there. They must make a mint this time of year with student purchases.

I took the plunge on a refurb'd 2015 15" MBP 2.2/16GB/256 SSD , at a $300 saving. ( $200 if you factor in the education price ) No choice. My son needs one for college. If I wanted Beats wireless solo 2's, they can be found new for $150. And still have $50 extra in my wallet.

It would have been a wash for us... the 15" MBP 2.5/16GB/512 SSD is $380 off via refurb. We got it new for $200 off + the Beats... which the cheapest I see now is $180 at Best Buy... so new was same as refurb for this model. (My daughter really wanted to Beats) Without them, would have been a good deal to go refurb.

I know best buy price matches, but would they price match the deal apple is doing and give the free beats as well?

I don't think their price matching includes freebies. BB does have the Beats on sale this week for $120 off though.

First post, been lurking for a while, need your some opinions. Looking at purchasing a used z0rg 15.4/2.8/16GB/1TB 2015. With apple care good for another year and half with the new magic mouse, keyboard and Super Drive for $3300 CDN ($2525 USD). Is this a decent deal or should I hold off for better? Thanks in advance
