Sold my iMac the other day due to lack of use and was originally going to use my 11" Air as a primary computer for awhile. Best Buy had the 13" rMBP on sale for $1149 and with my student discount coupon I picked one up for $999. Including tax the computer cost me $1069. Not a bad deal for a $1300 computer.

This is my 3rd rMBP so I'm thinking this one is going to stick around unless the one coming out later this year is so amazing I will have to have it.

Ugh, I saw that. I keep not pulling the trigger on that deal. It pops up every few days. I think the open box was something like $900 after tax, but the rep on the phone couldn't really verify what warranty I would have with it (from Apple).

I wouldn't say it's a phenomenal deal, but it's probably the best you'll find from a reputable seller at this point in time. Even the Apple refurbished one is $1,269. Next best price I see for one in new condition is from B&H at $1,449. Best Buy is showing the regular price of $1,499 for me. I'm actually surprised you were able to get it for $1,249. Did they have a sale at the time? If it's the computer you want, I would say keep it.

Yes, there was $100 off sale making it $1399 and then I used by student discount coupon for another $150. That price of $1399 for the 13.3in rMBP 256 GB only lasted one day. I'm glad I caught it. I'm keeping it for now. I'm past the 15 days return window now. So if I don't keep it. I will sell it on eBay or something. Thanks so much for your help. It's not the computer I want but it's the best one I can afford right now.

So with the frustration of waiting for the Skylake MBPs, the need for the current I/O and that my cMBP just suddenly got the dreaded USB device drawing too much power error with nothing connected, I finally bit the bullet and bought a mint mid-2014 MBP maxed out with the 2.5 i7 for 1675. It's a world of difference coming from my late 2008 maxed out cMBP Penryn and couldn't be much happier. I'm definitely going to push my new MBP for many years like my old one and the Powerbooks that came before it.

Out of curiosity, is your cMBP from 2006? And how well does it work for you on a day-to-day basis? I'm currently using a 2008 Sony VAIO Z (2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM, 1366x768 display, Windows Vista, upgraded 240GB SSD), and have been looking into getting the next MacBook Pro (fingers crossed for 2016 and at least Skylake).

The VAIO is exhibiting several problems at this stage, such as no more support for latest versions of iTunes (which means I can no longer sync my iPhone, no more support for latest version of Chrome, YouTube videos will play without visual portion, which can necessitate restarting just the Internet browser, but sometimes the entire computer, logging in takes forever, battery life is less than two hours when using dedicated graphics, et cetera. I'm hoping a MacBook Pro would last me at least five years, if not the eight that I've had my VAIO.

My cMBP is an early 2008 Penryn maxed out with 500gb drive that I added. It was running okay but I haven't been using a battery with it (battery swelled up). I had it running on 10.7 Lion and also encountered the same issues (iTunes sync, video, etc). If I upgrade to Mountain Lion and put back in a battery, it might be running okay but with the USB drawing issue (possibly associated to motherboard issues), that was the final straw for me to upgrade.

Seems like they've changed refurb product packaging.

I remember they used to come in plain brown box, but I got my 15" rMBP from refurb store today and it came in the same box as the new ones, the only difference is that there's a small text saying it's a refurb.

15" rMBP is a lot bigger than I remember, but then I had 13" rMBP for a while and later, 12" rMB for a bit.

Is it possible that Apple are craftily selling new ones on the refurb store to clear stock for new models?

If that's the case, I can't complain. :p

I should stick to buying refurbs from now on since I can't use education discount anymore, refurbs are cheaper and they're as good as the new ones, if not better.

That's a shame about your sysbrd. Still working great (SSD upgrade). :)

Edit...just had a thought. You could just stop using your stock USB ports and upgrade to USB 3.0 ports if you're not using your ExpressCard slot.

Decided to grab this since I didn't want to wait for a laptop that would have things I wouldn't need and be way expensive. Used this MacBook at work for years without a problem and loved it.
You didn't get that particular listing though, right? They're selling that for retail price. Apple sells the Core i7 version with twice the RAM through their own online store for only $70 more.

I'm really thinking about getting the 13.3 inch rMBP 128gig for $1,199 ($1,050 w/education discount) on Friday. They also have an open box for $1031 but unsure if I could use that $150 coupon for that. Currently I have a late 2009 iMac that is running flawlessly (albeit slower) and I've had it since 2009 and really need an upgrade. Should I take a plunge and skip the newer models coming out in Oct? Of course the coupon expires the day before apple's next event. Should I wait or nah?

Yea, for some reason the deal had changed after I posted the link that I saw several days ago on 9to5 Mac. The price I paid was $1470 which I thought was very good since I didn't want to wait for the new, more expensive models and got the same model MacBook that I had used at work for several years without a single problem. I tried to delete the post when I saw it had changed. My bad.

Now that we know their will not be a refresh of the MacBook Pro worthy of a new purchase, I have begun to realize I'm gonna buy a used or Refurbished 2015 model, MacBook Pro 15" or 13" Retina. Anyone bought a MacBook Pro from B&H NYC? I was on the chat with a guy for a while, asking the quality of the Laptop, tried to get the serial to look it up. They where really nice, but it was defiantly laborious to try to get more information about the history of these laptops.

Where they used for Demos? Production? Where they returns? Do they have scratches marks? I asked all those questions and they couldn't answer them all, though they tried.

Anyway, they sometimes have deals that pop up, they also have a return policy that isn't bad, as long as you want to deal with the hassle of sending it back to NYC.

Anyway.. the 512GB AMD R9, i7 rMBP ~$2300 NOT the best price, but sometimes they have some OK clearance prices.

I've decided to get the 13" rMBP base model for $1289 with tax with the Beats offer directly from Apple. Best Buy removed the $100 option.

I do plan on getting the 27" 4K display from Dell for $498 shipped. Can't wait.

So just curious if anyone else knew this but I just got the brand new, never been used, still in the original box and plastic early 2015 13" retina MacBook Pro I bought from an electronics store on eBay. Great laptop and glad I bought. In the description it said the 1 year limited Apple warranty was included. So when I tried to register the laptop it said there was no warranty or service was available for this laptop. So I called customer support and it turns out that since this was a third party purchase, the warranty period began last June when the dealer bought it and despite the fact that it had never been sold or used and just sat in the store for over a year Apple says that the warranty period started in June of 2015 and it was standard practice for them to do this. So Imsaid that basically anyone who does what I did by buying their Apple product from a third party is screwed as far as the warranty is concerned if the product isn't purchased before a year is up. She paused and said "Yes." I said thanks and hung up. Just wondering if everyone knew this was common practice for Apple and if it's happened to anyone else. Had never heard about this before.

Damn, that sucks. You could always contact the seller stating what was advertised was not what was received and you would be correct. Therefore, return it then buy it directly from Apple. I'm pretty sure the warranty is important lol.

Well the problem with that is that it was a nice sale. The price was reduced by $300 so that's why I went ahead and bought it from the electronics dealer on eBay instead of Apple. Well worth it to me for that reduction. But it did say that Applecare was included. You're right that I did think about at least telling them it was false advertising to say that and perhaps they didn't know this either since the laptop was brand new. I was just checking to see if this is something that has always been part of Apple's selling plan that I had never heard of before because I never have. No biggie since I'm always pretty easy on all my devices but it does seem that something is fishy somewhere that someone should answer to. If it makes other people aware of the situation I guess that would be okay.

Well, if the computer has a hardware-related malfunction in the near future, that $300 you saved buying the laptop would be used on the repair :p

The difference here is that your electronics reseller on eBay won't be an "Authorized Apple reseller/dealer". BestBuy is an example (there's smaller ones as well). That is not the case for those companies (they're typically also authorized to sell you AppleCare+ kits). Their systems are integrated with Apple's so Apple is notified when the unit is sold and the warranty starts ticking.

Yes that is the plan but since I've never had a malfunction with any of my Apple products I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Okay so I was wondering about places like Best Buy last night. So the warranty clock doesn't start ticking when Best Buy acquires the product until it's sold since they are authorized, correct? Like I said, no biggie since I don't expect any problems with my laptop. I'm retired now and it will be used lightly for things I need to use it for. The 15" I used at work (heavy photoshop work since I was a photographer at a newspaper) never once had a problem for the years I was using it. Thanks for the info.

Yep, the systems for integration between resellers and the OEMs has been in place for a long time. Not surprising that an eBay reseller wouldn't be an authorized dealer though - it's a pretty extensive and rigorous process to become one.

So technically that eBay reseller shouldn't be advertising the product with an Apple warranty unless authorized, which, since it wasn't available for the laptop I purchased, they probably aren't. I did send them an email telling them about this situation.

Yep, an unauthorized reseller would have purchased these just as you or I would - from Apple or an authorized reseller - or - from a broker. Brokers exist for companies to dump large quantities of product they want to get off of their inventories (typically end of line things) - the OEM or reseller would typically sell things to a broker for their cost or even below it - just to be able to recoup the majority of their investment. (there's a cost to keeping items in a warehouse).

They really shouldn't be advertising these items as "new with manufacturer warranty" when they know full well that the warranty started "ticking" already. If anything, they should be calling them open box - which is the same, as the warranty starts with the original sale.
