Yep, an unauthorized reseller would have purchased these just as you or I would - from Apple or an authorized reseller - or - from a broker. Brokers exist for companies to dump large quantities of product they want to get off of their inventories (typically end of line things) - the OEM or reseller would typically sell things to a broker for their cost or even below it - just to be able to recoup the majority of their investment. (there's a cost to keeping items in a warehouse).

They really shouldn't be advertising these items as "new with manufacturer warranty" when they know full well that the warranty started "ticking" already. If anything, they should be calling them open box - which is the same, as the warranty starts with the original sale.
Thanks for the info. Good to learn something new everyday, even if it's about shady business practices.

The difference here is that your electronics reseller on eBay won't be an "Authorized Apple reseller/dealer". BestBuy is an example (there's smaller ones as well). That is not the case for those companies (they're typically also authorized to sell you AppleCare+ kits). Their systems are integrated with Apple's so Apple is notified when the unit is sold and the warranty starts ticking.

Just as a follow up ElectronicsValley.com (where I purchased my laptop from on eBay) emailed me back and said they couldn't understand why I was having a problem activating my warranty and that they have had thousands (their word) of people purchase Apple products and successfully activatie their warranty. Of course they didn't say they were an "Authorized Apple reseller/dealer" so I just told them I would be letting people in the forums know about this glitch just in case they were thinking of buying something from them.

So tried one last time to figure this all out and contacted Apple Customer Service again and talked to a nice man who worked his magic and after getting my recent purchase date entered into the system (the woman I talked to last night did not) he found that my one year warranty WAS good and that I have 313 days left. So I guess persistance pays off and getting the right customer rep.

Kudo's for you for getting something out of them!!

So - the lesson here should be - never buy from an unauthorized reseller again! Really don't want the chance of you getting burned. No-one deserves that!!

Glad it worked out for you!! Hope it's all positive from here on out!! :)

I bought y 15" rMBP from the same eBay seller not too long ago and had the warranty from the day I received it.

Ok, after reviewing a couple dozen items between the eBay reseller, Best Buy and the Apple Store, I'm pretty sure the eBay reseller has to be an authorized Apple reseller.

Too many of the items they're selling are the same price as the Apple Store (if they weren't an authorized reseller, then they wouldn't be making any money).

It's possible that they could be working with an authorized reseller (but, why wouldn't the authorized reseller just setup an eBay store and cut these guys out then?) :)

My guess is, in the circumstance where the purchase date and warranty commencing didn't line up, it was a returned / open box item.

Heh...I sure wouldn't be buying an iPhone from these guys...they're pricing is absolutely nasty!! :)

Just bought a Mid 2015 rMBP 15.4", base specs (2.2ghz, 16gb, 256gb) from eBay. Seller said it is in mint condition, used a couple of times for some school assignments. Has AppleCare through 04/2019 as verified through the serial. Got it for $1,450, don't think I did too bad.

I really wanted to wait to see what is coming but I had a 2006 Black plastic Macbook that couldn't run anything anymore and I have some work for a side business that needs done sooner rather than later. My wife said if I bought a 15" she would take it when the new ones come out if I buy a 13" (which is the size I really wanted).

Well it definitely wasn't an open box. It was totally wrapped the way Apple products are, inside in out. The woman customer rep had no idea what the situation was because she didn't even attempt to enter the serial number into the system or know about backdating the day I purchased the laptop which the man I talked to the next day did. Maybe she was new. Just glad I got such a great deal on a great laptop (thanks 9to5 Mac) and have my warranty to boot.

Just dropped 3000€ on a MBPr 15" 2,8GHz. I actually do hope this beast is so fast, that the advantage drawn from Kaby Lake processors won't be that big... Well I still might have a chance to get the new one in case they announce and release right away.
Oh, that's not going to happen? Well, I'll be ready for Semester 5 one way or another.

Really can't wait to have it in front of me. The screen of my ~2010 MSI i3 cx720 just died lol. CAN'T ****ING WAIT.

Just dropped the same comment on the waiting for skylake thread - kind of as a goodbye there and a hello here...
[doublepost=1472771584][/doublepost]What shells/covers or other ways of protecting your MBPr 15" do you guys use? Could you link me something from amazon - if that is not illegal on this forum? What bags do you carry it in? Any other tips and tricks? Never had a macbook.. Or actually any tech worth this amount of money.
Trying to limit the price, but don't want to compromise safety!! The MBPr has to last either 5 to 7 years or be worth enough in like 3 years for it to be sellable (to get a new one)!

This is the cover I used for the MacBook Pro at work. Fit perfectly and had a nice soft, rubberized touch to it. It's not clear, more cloudy which I liked. It is on the costly side depending on what you want to spend. If you do order make sure to check if your model is compatible.

This was the bag I still use for my own 13" rMacBook Pro. You can put a ton of stuff in it.

Thank you for the reply! I was happy seeing 25$... But not available in Germany.
But you would go with a hardcase and a good bagpack then?

Yes, though I guess I wouldn't call it a hard cover in the sense of the word hard. It is very soft to the touch though you couldn't twist it. Offered good protection. To bad about the availability. I was a newspaper photographer and carried my MacBook Pro and all my cords, hotspot, markers, mouse and everything else I need to transmit my photos in that bag. Fit under a seat on a plane easily. So I guess depending on your situation that would be a good way to go.

I got the best deal from Best Buy that even I couldn't imagine!

So today I went inside the store to play around with a Windows lap top thinking the rMBP 13" would be too small for me and (ruled out the 15" due to price) decided to walk to the Apple section to play around with the rMBP one more time. Low and behold I saw the base rMBP 13" on sale for $100 office making the sale price $1199 and I knew I could still use my $150 student coupon to bring it down further to $1049. I was originally going to get it at this price earlier this week but they took the sale off online and now I'm like WOW it's back already?

While on the fence of purchasing I also spoke with the Apple guy about the Time Capsule and when he mentioned Staples has it $100 off (reg price $299) and BB would price match it I was completely SOLD! I needed a new router anyway and at that price there wasn't a chance in hell I'd pass that up! I told him I wanted both the macbook and the time capsule.

While all of this is going on an actual BB employee mentioned to the Apple guy that the sale price was incorrect and the rMBP was now regular price as it was stated on the website and the Apple guy was pissed because no one had told him to take the old price down but he told me the store would still honor it!!

Long story short I ended up paying a little over $1300 with tax for both the macbook and the 2TB time capsule and saving me over $350 with all the discounts and price matching mostly due to someone's **** up. The Apple guy was also awesome for telling me the time capsule was $100 off at Staples. I would have never known that at the time!

Now I felt guilty for trying to abandon Apple but now I'm back in their good graces.

Where all the UK eBay resellers getting their machines from? There are brand new UK specification Retina Pros on there at a better price than Apple themselves (even with educational discount) or any other reseller. How are they doing this? I'm a bit worried about buying goods with a dubious origin, hence the question. Any time I've asked one, they just say "official suppliers" but how can they beat the big corporations that buy much larger quantities on price?

For example the higher end 15" is £1999 from Apple, £1799 with education discount but can be found brand new and sealed for £1500 to £1600 from various sellers.

If it's new and cheaper, it's usually imported US or Hong Kong model, but you said UK spec so I'm not sure.

Also I decided to return the refurb rMBP I bought few weeks ago, depending on what gets announced, I'll go for either 2015 27" 5k iMac (256GB SSD + R9 M390 on refurb store, not bad) or new rMBP, or just wait out couple of months and see what's up. Gonna suck for a bit without using OS X but at least I have my iPad Pro to use.

There has been some weird currency fluctuations due to the brexit vote. Could be someone smart enough to order at exactly the right time.

(But too dumb to realize that their stock is about to be "the old version"?)

Thanks for the replies, I ended up going with Apple direct as with student discount and Beats, the price was essentially equivalent for the lower end 15". If I chose the high end version I would have gone with eBay sellers as the saving is much more significant.

I've just completed two laptop refurbishments:

Early 2009 MacBook (White) 2.0GHz Core2Duo - Upgraded to 6GB of RAM and SSD upgrade. Boots OSX 10.11.6 in 36 seconds. Just waiting on replacement battery. The original battery is long gone, and the replacement was a cheap knock-off that no longer holds charge after 12 months. Much to my surprise, despite the limited power of the computer it functions extremely well. A couple of keys are broken and the top case is chipped. If I can fine a NOS spare, I'll replace it and probably sell it on, or give it to my mother to replace her slowly dying laptop (Pentium Dual-Core which should give you an idea how old it is!)

2011 17" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz i7 (Quad Core) - did this for a friend who was thinking of replacing this until I informed him that I could put more RAM and a 500GB SSD in it and get similar performance to a new laptop. Copying over all his files took 3 hrs on the USB 2.0 connection with the external hard drive, but after it was set up we did a cold-start test and it hit the desktop in 17.6 seconds, apps load quickly and my friend is over the moon. Old 750GB mechanical hard drive was turned into a time-machine/back-up drive using a USB 3.0 enclosure. It now has 16GB of RAM and just flies along. We did a boot-race against a new Retina MacBook Pro, and it gave the new laptop a good run for its money!

If it's the one with the dGPu don't expect it to last more than 3-4 years.

does anyone know if the 2015 rmpb's screen can be replaced or is it a replacement unit? my screen has a cluster of dead pixels

At 3,000 euros it better have the dedicated GPU. And is the Radeon really as unreliable as people say? Not sure what the redesigned MacBook pro will use, but I'm hoping my next computer lasts at least as long as the one I've been using now (eight years).

How the hell would a computer with a dedicated GPU last SHORTER than one with an internal one...?

How the hell would a computer with a dedicated GPU last SHORTER than one with an internal one...?
I think we're not speaking as to how long it will last before it becomes obsolete, but rather how long it will last before the part fails (since a dedicated GPU is more complex and will probably run at a higher temperature, accelerating degradation).

GPU degradation...? Seriously? It's a non-moving part made out of stuff too small to see in a normal microscope! It doesn't break, it gets swapped out due to harder, better, faster, stronger stuff!
