If you order from B&H, and there's something wrong with your unit when it arrives, can you take it back to the Apple Store for an exchange if it's within the 14-day purchase period, or do you need to send it back to B&H?
What's the latest 15"Mbp that you can upgrade the RAM and SSD yourself?
I used to have a 2012 13" mbp, which after about 3 years of ownership i upgraded the RAM to 16gb and installed an SSD and it was like a new machine.
Looking for a new mbp but can't justify the cost of a new one, so wondered how old I had to go to do the same again.
Ah really? That sucks.2012, pre retina models![]()
The USB-C ports on the right side on the 15'' are full bandwidth unlike on the 13'', but unless you plan to use 40gbps on both sides simultaneously then that's no big deal. Otherwise yeah, 15'' has more powerful CPUs and a dGPU, no other real differences.
My order status also just switched over to Preparing for Shipping last night.
im just wondering if the 15 was a good choice since i really wanted the exact specs in a 13...
I mean with the 15" you're basically getting a much more powerful machine and a bigger screen, so as long as the cost and size are ok for you then you can't really go wrong with it. See how it feels once it arrives and you can decide whether this or the 13" is better.
What do you plan on using it for?
Ordered a 15" Space Grey 3.1 GHz / 16GB RAM / 2TB SSD w/ TB / 560 4GB on June 12th, Thailand Store - Should deliver by the 23rd of June.What did you order and when?
desktop replacement
Mine was within 24 hoursSorry if this has already been asked, but how long after the status changed to "Preparing for shipment" have the orders actually been shipping out?
You can literally go and pick up that exact config in an Apple Store today if you wanted, no waiting!I ordered the following model on Monday 19th Jun - it is pretty much the maxed out version of the 15" MBP with TB. I will keep you update on any status updates I get...

Be persistent. The Specialist you talk to will likely tell you that they only have stock configs. Then they load up the actual stock status and bam, 'secret' 3.1/1TB/560 models! Thanks for the heads up, will take a look now![]()

It's not shown for online pickup because it's a hidden configuration. But they do stock them. You could call but it's easier in person. Here's a fuller explanation in one of my earlier posts that I've copied below:Is it best to phone my local apple store then? It's not coming up online as available to pick up?
Yes.
If we look at the "Identify your MacBook Pro" Apple support article, we can see all of the part numbers (i.e. configurations as sold excluding built to order models) that the 2017 MacBook Pro has. I've copied them below, and compared them with ones that are listed for sale at apple.com. The ones for sale online are in bold.
15":
13" with Touch Bar:
- MPTR2xx/A
- MPTT2xx/A
- MPTU2xx/A
- MPTV2xx/A
- MPTW2xx/A
- MPTX2xx/A
13" without Touch Bar:
- MPXV2xx/A
- MPXW2xx/A
- MPXX2xx/A
- MPXY2xx/A
- MQ002xx/A
- MQ012xx/A
So this year there are four models that exist but are not available online*. An educated guess is that these will be:
- MPXQ2xx/A
- MPXR2xx/A
- MPXT2xx/A
- MPXU2xx/A
And these will be available in most larger stores. It is almost certain that the Apple employee you speak to will have no idea that these configs exist, so you'll have to push them to check.

- 15", 3.1GHz i7, 1TB, AMD 560, Silver
- 13", Touch Bar, 3.5GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB, Space Grey
- 13", Touch Bar, 3.5GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB, Silver
*Of course, you can configure the same specification online, but this will be considered a BTO model and thus have a different part number in a different format - despite being materially identical products. Nerds can spot the difference between such units by looking at the back of the retail box: BTO models have no large specifications sticker, while retail configs do.
