Tried again last night to use kindle app but there's that glaring white line at bottom as you see above. That page is just an example. At night though it sticks out because it's brighter than the text as you can see.

Here's Apple's own and obviously what they intend: IMG_0010.PNG

It's a minor gripe and i've mentioned it before but these things need worked out. Just need an "auto hide" in settings for this. But I'm a reader and the iphone is my primary reader so back it goes today. It just makes more sense to stick with an iphone 8 plus and next year get the bigger X option and apps, UI, and all that will hopefully have matured a bit.

Apple is always saying software + hardware. One of these needs some work still. Another problem is apple clearly designing software around its hardware instead of reverse that they've always claimed. Notch, lack of home button, etc has Apple screwing up iOS a bit to accommodate this. There's a lot of tweaks to make. Battery % sucks, pulling down control center, swishing apps away should be easier, and so on. And as ever, iOS is dependent on devs to update apps and that's a wait game.

I am returning my iPhone X today, because I find FaceID very frustrating. It has no problems recognizing my face, but I find that the workflow is a step back. It seems like a simple procedure to first tap the screen then swipe up. But to me it feels awkward to reach my thumb all the way down to the bottom edge to swipe up, and still feel like I am holding my phone securely. So I end up using both hands to unlock the phone.

Besides that, I find that FaceID has trouble 'seeing me' at awkward angles, for instance when I try to check something on my phone while it is charging on a nightstand, or when it is laying on my work desk. So now I have to first pick up my phone from the desk or take it off the nightstand charger.

These seem like trivial little differences. But to me, it is enough of a step back from TouchID that it annoys me every time. I guess at some point in the future I will have to get used to it. But for now... I am going to love the TouchID on the 8.

EDIT: Returned the X and got an 8. Bliss! :)

Yes, and I (app developer) and my company won't update our games unless Apple forces us to. Right now they work with black borders on the sides to preserve the proper screen ratio intended for them, and that looks good enough for us. We won't invest the time to adjust it to the X's screen unless we are forced to. The notch was really a terrible design decision (from the developer's standpoint)...

Well if you can’t adapt to Apple’s policy or the app users for their convince then maybe you should pull your app off the store or just let it fail. I wouldn’t provide business to a developer who refuses to updates. I’m not a fan of the notch but adapting is probably a good idea for the iPhone X users.

I keep saying it needed 4 gb but people on here say “you dont need that much or 3 is fine” Apple sheep lol. Next year I’m betting 4 gb of ram and pro motion screen is coming
Wow. Sounds like you should be the one engineering these phones.
Too smart man....you’re just too smart

What did you think was gonna happen?
Apple was going to slide you a check like your Netflix or YouTube? And Pay you handsomely for working overtime to adapt the new design?
Yeah, no.
If you’re a small time App developer, adapting to the iPhone X is basically Volunteer work.

And don’t worry, Apple is NOT going to force you to do anything...I doubt they even realize your app exist

Huh? Having a bad day? All I am saying is that we will not put in the work to adapt to the X's screen, nothing more, nothing less. I simply dislike their design decision, and having to cope with it doesn't make much sense for us (and many other smaller app developers I assume). And in terms of "forcing", Apple could do it by one day changing the app development guidelines so that apps must natively support the new screen resolution. Similar things have happened in the past...

Sorry these features should have been in the X since iPad already had these features
[/QUOTE]
What features?
The 120hz screen?......so, people bought a phone that they ALREADY KNEW didn’t have a 120hz screen & are now returning it because it doesn’t have a 120hz screen? Lmao

This sounds like a case of “I bought a product I couldn’t afford”

Not “I’m returning a product because I’m dissatisfied”

Typical lazy software developer. If you used the correct frameworks you would have little to change to utilise the new screen layout but hopefully your sales figures reflect the lack of effort.

Well, I disagree. I personally think it is a better idea to NOT update the app and natively "support" the notch. The reason is simple, our games run in landscape mode, and they look better with iOS automatically showing small borders on the left & right instead of having a notch on one side and not the other.

for a 1,000$ phone I expect to have all the iPad Pro features plus whatever the X has to offer. But typical sheep defending Apple since they could do no wrong. And I could afford the phone I chose not to because it was missing key features. And waiting for the larger version next year

Okay for games I can see that makes sense

This idea that you “have” to adapt is what puzzles me.
There literally apps in the App Store that haven’t been updated since the IPhone 4 was introduced.
If you don’t like the iPhone X design, that’s fine. You and millions of others don’t either.
But Apple isn’t holding a gun to your head. You don’t have to adapt.

If your not one of the “big guys”, You could honestly never touch your app again, and Apple wouldn’t even notice.
Promise

Sorry for asking such a lame question but I haven’t returned anything for some time.... Does Apple not charge restocking fees anymore?

At least you tried it! And now you know!

Can’t fault ya for that. Vs writing it off without actually trying it

You don’t think 1 day is a little too soon to call a judgement on it? If you’ve bought for:Apple I’d try and spend at least a week with it - some of the ways to use it are very different so will naturally take time to adjust to

Why the insult? We use the proper frameworks, but it would still be invested time and the result would still look unpleasing (in our opinion). In our case it simply does not make sense, and I doubt our customers will care about it. This whole topic does not apply to apps running in portrait mode, obviously.

I'm returning mine today. The X needs 4GB of memory if its doing 458 PPI. I can tell this has 6-like sluggishness, when that phone was initially released. I'll wait until the next phone has 4GB.

Rubbish. The 4GB on the iPad Pro was due to the split screen apps and the higher resolution. The X has 3GB the same as the plus phones as it is required for the camera.

Just an FYI the resolution of the Plus phones is 2208x1242 vs the X 2436x1125. That’s 2,742,336 pixels vs 2,740,500 on the X. (The plus also has to scale down to 1920x1080)

Um, no. This is not how it works... see the dropped 32 bit support as an example. Apple could in theory change its guidelines one day so that apps have to support the X (and future iterations) natively or they would be rejected / removed.

Anyway, let's get back on topic.

I think returns are premature fellows. You may end up buying one again.

I'm finding a lot of apps looks awesome in landscape with the notch. Obviously it's not pretty but still, there's a lot of room there for a small phone.

There are things I really hate about this phone (At least one, that can be fixed with software) but I just think it's too early for returns.

In such a cluttered marketplace One would expect companies to embrace new platforms and have the vision to present something outstanding to enable recognition and help them rise above the 95% of crap apps out there. Surely the opportunity was there to get your app highlighted as ‘designed for X’ which is basically free advertising and recognition. But hey, your a developer not a sales guy obviously.

You do not know me, or my company, or our products. Let's simply agree to disagree. :)

Having spent a full day with the X (at Disneyland mind you), it’s going back. It’s just not as easy to use as my 7+. I feel like I’m constantly swiping my fingers with the X. It feels like giving your fingers a workout just navigating the screen. Maybe I’m used to the Touch ID, but the first gen X is not for me.

The OLED screen is just not that much better than the 7+ screen. I can’t tell which is better, in fact. Tells you how good the older phone screens are. I’m not factoring the difference in display tilt angles. I think the old screen looks better at an angle than the X.

Face ID, while cool initially, makes too many comprises usability-wise. I think I would keep the X Apple kept the Touch ID with the Face ID as a transition.

I think the wireless charging feature is the one I’ll miss going back to the 7+.

At the end of the day the biggest wow factor for me really is the price tag. And this is where I think Apple got it wrong. I think many of us on the fence would keep the X had the price not been as high. I think Apple just missed the value proposition with the X. It’s just too expensive for what the X is offers. I’m still thinking...my goodness, I just spent almost $1300 for a phone. Even that is before all the accessories I’ll have to buy for the change in form factor from the 7+.

I have used Apple phones since the iPhone 3. I upgraded to every new generation. I’m sorry Apple, I’ll have to skip this one.

This is exactly why I'm returning mine.

I've had it for about 2 days now. I am not impressed by the screen. I've played with Samsung phones and their screens are still way better. I don't think the X screen is that much better than my 7+ It is not $1000 good.

Face ID works for the most part but there are still too many instances when it doesn't work and I hardly have that issue with Touch ID. Touch ID will only not work when I'm still wet from the shower. Other than that it is great. I leave my phone on my desk at work and just use Touch ID all the time. It does not work for me with Face ID. That is a major pain in the arse.

The screen is too small compared to my 7+ It's just too narrow. All you are getting is height. Compared to my 7+ you're getting less screen. If I wanted that small of a screen I would just get a regular 8 not the X.

In conclusion, I have a paid off 7+ and this is not worth the $1,000 upgrade. I'll be returning and going back to my 7+ and save some money and hope that Apple gets it right next year. I'm just not impressed. I was expecting more for a $1,000 phone.

We need to stop bashing people because they are returning their phones. This phone isn’t for everyone. If they don’t like it and have complaints, then let them have their reservations, or try to help them fix the issue (if it’s even fixable) .

I think it’s cool Apple did the 8/8 Plus and the X this year. Gives people the chance to stick with what they know or take a look into what they are trying to do in the future.

Ps.. can’t wait for my X to come in lol

Apple dropping 32bit support isn’t the same as adapting to a new screen design.
Whether your app beautifully wraps around the notch or not, is not important. a lot of games on the App Store didn’t adapt to the iPhone + sizes.
So, instead of being properly upscaled for a 1080p screen, we get games that think they’re running on an IPhone 4, and the image is just “stretched”

Twitter, & YouTube didn’t have a choice. Those apps needed to look good come launch day, or Apple would send the mafia after them
