My gs3 has onscreen buttons as well. The physical home button is now a camera shortcut and the lit capacitive keys are disabled.....ahhh...The joys of rooting. Stuff jail breakers can only dream of.

How did you add on screen buttons?

ETA: What ROM are you using and how is it?

Most likely paranoid android. I'm on it and it has tablet mode, which is amazing esp for the 4.8" screen. I have software buttons enabled also.

I put my phone in tablet mode with the on screen keys. Can have it normal with the status bar on top and the three keys "justified" along the bottom, but I prefer the way I have it now.

Added some pics.. ran into a couple of bugs, on 9.06 build. Still my daily driver though for sure.

Here's the verizon link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858298

To add to the discussion regarding apps, I will agree I prefer the polish of some of the iOS apps I had on 4S. No, I don't think android has a very good RSS reader compared to my favorite Reeder, but easyRSS has come close. I like the swipe left right like reeder added.

I liked photostream a lot, but I am happy with Dropbox as it instantly uploads and I can access those pictures online anywhere I want to link or d/l. Plus I flashed my rom to get 50GB of dropbox for 2 years, paid $5 via fiverr to get someone to do all my referrals so I'm at nearly 70GB of dropbox..

Thanks for the info. I'm on at&t so I'll look for that version and flash it.

Can you stop the capacitive back and menu buttons from lighting up? How?

Edit: found it :p

Even on a mac?

Also, don't like the physical home button. :T I like my on screen buttons. When the device is off, it's just beautiful.

Yeah. The beauty of Android is that it doesn't discriminate. Any operating system can root as far as I know of.

I must concur that if you are not rooting your Android phone, you are not really using Android. Rooting is the reason you go Android. It lets you tweak and customize every tiny thing about your phone. Don't like the crappy skin they put on the stock OS? Get rid of it by flashing the stock OS. Wanna try that experimental ROM? Flash it in. Don't like it? Use one of your backup files to restore it back. And each and every one of those ROMs have different options and settings to adjust things. For instance, the ParanoidAndroid ROM lets you change each individual app on your phone from the phone version, the tablet version, or the phablet version. Some apps work better with the tablet version. Some work better with the phone version.

Basically, if you have a rooted Android phone, you can just ignore the software and buy the phone for the hardware itself. And the S3 is a BEAST of a phone from what I hear (I'm on the Nexus). Putting stock Jellybean or ParanoidAndroid on it just makes it perfect.

I'd be holding out for the Galaxy Nexus 2 if I didn't have a phone already.

The GS3 is too...iPhoney.

I'm using cm10 and a flash able zip to add navigation buttons. Looks like Gnex, not a tablet.

GS3 looks nothing like the iphone when running cm10.

Only the iphone build quality is superior at this point. JB is just as smooth as iOS.

What's the flashable zip to use the navigation bar? Does CM10 not include it? Some ROMs do and some don't so it would be nice if there was a way to add it to any ROM and be able to disable the capacitive buttons.

Today I rooted and installed a custom ROM for the first time on the S3. Very easy process, kind of like jailbreaking with the iphone.

Installed a custom JB rom, and the device is now noticeably faster. Google Now looks cool, but voice search works mainly with english US. Doing searchs on other languages brings up a normal search. Im sure this will be solve with future updates, just like Siri working with new languages in iOS 6.

Tomorrow I will be trying more stuff, like kernels and themes. Maybe CM10 and other ROMS, just to find one to keep for the next few weeks.

Enjoy it while u can, because the most enjoyable use of android is browsing xda while looking for custom rom, the process finding and installing a custom rom is awesome for a while, after u found the best rom for your preference, that's it, u will miss the apple's appstore and its ecosystem so bad.

Well at least in my experience with android was like that.

But once you got the phone working/looking and setup to your liking didn't you find it difficult to go back to the unsetupable OS?

Or is your iphone jailbroken?

nope because every apps in my iPhone is much better in android counterparts.

google reader vs reeder
tweetcaster vs tweetbot

tapatalk android (laggy scrolling even with jellybean vs talkatap ios

facebook android (laggy scroll again) vs facebook ios

speedtest android (non smooth animation) vs speedtest ios

my galaxy nexus's small sound from speaker vs quality sound of iphone 4's speaker which is better and louder

crap blueish camera on my galnex vs sharp and even on low light situation on my 4s

green purple tint amoled on my galnex vs sharp and natural color on my 4S

etc etc etc.

amoled is overated, all i found in amoled was some purple tint (my sgs2) or green tint (my galnex). in amoled, face becomes too red, dark becomes so dark that you can't see a detail of a photo being taken that shows some detailed shadow because it's too black.

Point taken, other than apps though, cause I feel they are getting there, I don't really decide my phone purchase on that.

The OS itself, didn't that 'get to you' after you couldn't do anything with your phone, coming from android? I feel that iOS doesn't really have any functionality except run apps. Whereas Android does really have true functionality if you know what I mean.

I can see myself getting frustrated with iOS and regarding the apps, they get updated at the rate I change clothes.

About the screens and camera, I doubt i'll go for a Samsung so there is no Amoled for me or the cameras they use (unless i'm really really impressed with the Note 2).

And also those who said the GS3 is too color saturated and not natural looking like the iPhone, but the iP5 is now 44% more color saturated.

It's a different thing. I'll try to explain. When apple says "44% more saturated" it's just using a marketing term. What it really means is that the iPhone 5 (and the iPad 3) can handle 44% more color saturation without having color clipping. But there's more. Because of this the iPad 3 and the iphone 5 are two of the few consumer devices that can display all the sRGB scale. This is a HUGE if you are into photography, because before, only professional monitors had this ability. (Almost) 100% sRGB scale means that you can see the REAL colors of the picture, no less, no more. The gs3 screen is simply oversaturated and can't handle that saturation. You can have that effect if you raise color saturation on your lcd television. Colors will start to clip and fine gradients will be lost. The only thing where samsung screen is better is in blacks. But let's see how the iPhone 5 will be with blacks, it should be improved

How so? Many apps in the AppStore have near perfect replacements in the google play store. List some must have apps in the AppStore that have no equivalent in the google play store please...

Why are you using a Gnex as a comparison in a thread dedicated to the s3? The s3 is light years ahead of the Gnex dude.

Id rather be in a walled garden but with beautiful and quality of apps than in a freedom with craptastic apps.

Welcome to the matrix bro. There's a pill for that.

I think you just made the most perfect description of iOS vs Android :eek:

I feel mostly the same. Ios is awesome for apps, but it seems many times that thats all if has: apps, apps and apps. No file browser, no sending files over BT to other phones or devices, no micro SD to avoid high costs of the 32GB and 64GB models over and over again, customization, etc.

Yeah, and that leads me to believe that iOS was brilliant money making operating system first then functionality and what not second.

It will remain a dumbed down OS since it is maximizing profits for the company. You need quite a few apps to get started and then you need so many more just to get on par with android.

That there already has made apple quite a few dollars. times by 60million. Hence a very successful company.

The gs3 screen is simply oversaturated

You are aware that there are different settings for the color saturation on the S3 - right? You can both increase and the decrease the saturation from what the standard setting is.

CM10 is awesomeeeeee.

Better battery life than stock touchwiz, spell checking (why on earth did samsung disable this???), super super smooth and fast, etc.

And I ensbled the on screen buttons like the nexus. Much faster way to work. Even the stock JB keyboard es smoother and better.
