So I swore up and down that I'd be getting an AT&T iPhone 5, and even had a pre-order in.
Yesterday, I walked into a local Best Buy Mobile store and walked out with a Galaxy S3.
My reasons, at least:
- I wish the iPhone 5's screen had maintained the same aspect ratio when it went to 4 inches - instead of just growing taller.
- Losing Google Maps with iOS 6 wasn't exactly appealing. I had grown to really like all the Google Maps functionality with my iPhone 4.
- I do a lot of reading on my phone on my commute to and from work (ride mass transit) and a 4.8" screen as on the S3 is much appreciated.
- User swappable battery is also a plus. My experience with the iPhone 4 is that it has *just enough* battery life to get around an unfamiliar city for a day. It's easy to suck some serious battery juice with some moderate surfing of Yelp or Foursquare or some Google Maps use for directions.
- The iPhone 4 blew almost everything away when it came on the market. It was absolutely worth upgrading to from my iPhone 3G. The only phone to approach its level of buzz was the HTC EVO 4G...which had a huge (for the time) screen and 4G access.
The iPhone 5? It doesn't feel like Apple tried to blow the market away like they did with the iPhone 4.
I'll miss the quick and easy syncing with iTunes (right now I'm using iSyncr to make iTunes talk to my S3) and iCloud, but for now, I'm happy with the S3. Maybe I'll switch back when my contract is up in 2 years and the iPhone 7 is out.
I'm keeping my iPhone 4 for an international travel phone to Canada and Europe and will get prepaid microsim cards as needed. Better than buying international data through Verizon.
