Yep, that seems to be the case now. I think they are waiting until the back to school offer expires on september 7th and then they will update soon after.

I think I might bite the bullet and buy now and not wait until the refresh. I don't think it will be anything too dramatic, probably just updated processor and gpu. I like to have the most up to date computer, but I realize even if i wait for the refresh, a year after that it will be out dated again when its refreshed again. After a year everyones computer is usually slightly out of date.

Same here. Whatever happens happens and we'll still have awesome machines. You just can't stay on top these days.

but buying so close to update? wouldn't it be better to have the latest and get what you want + more, cheaper?

But if I get it now I get a free iPod through the back to school program and I don't have to wait another two months.

If I don't get it now I'll have to wait, not get the iPod, and the only advantage probably will be a slight upgrade to the processor/gpu, which I don't think will really affect me. I think with the current iMac, it should be fast enough to last me the next 3-4 years, and by that time there will be some fancy new iMac I can go buy.

So it seems that a September/October timeframe is looking more likely for the iMac - but as the links above state...that gives Apple more time to get the latest technology and processors inside.

I will continue to wait.

Glad I checked this thread. I damn neared ponied up for an iMac 2 days ago.

Bodhi395,

Like you said before we are in the same boat. I have been driving myself nuts on this but I think I am going to cave in too before the promo ends. I think it would be nice to have the most up to date stuff, but I really don't think we are going to regret buying the iMac as is. In the past I have bought state of the art technology and before you know it it is outdated. My current laptop computer for example has a 40gb hard drive which in 2004 was huge. Now the iPod has a SSD that is close to that!

But the question we are asking ourselves is are the new updates going to make your computing experience any better and keep it relevant over a longer period of time? If so is it worth passing up on a really good deal?

I think the answer is No to all of the above and here is why...

In my opinion here are the more then likley updates, all of which are not "huge" redesigns.
1) Processor
2) GPU
3) Firewire
4) USB 3.0
5) iPod touch with camera and possible Facetime (Since you are getting the promo too this should be considered, although highly unlikely)

In four years the current iMac will be outdated and guess what... so will the refreshed iMac that we have been waiting for! The other things to consider is that it is not guaranteed what exact updates we are waiting for, when exactly it is going to happen or that the price will stay flat @ $1199 . Also with new technology there are usually a few bugs that have to be worked out. (See 27 in iMac screen yellowing and iPhone 4 reception)

I think that the iMac is going to be a huge improvement of what you currently have, it is def going to be for me. You are getting a free iPod Touch, a free printer, and money off a very excellent machine. Sounds pretty good to me!

a little offtopic, but i kinda get a bit mad, about all the iphone stuff, i remember when yellow tint was a widespread problem, and apple didnt want to admit it, no press conference was given.

iphone gets another treatment it seems, but thats not strange, seeing iphone is steve jobs flagship

Maybe they will some time in the future. After all, they have only just recognised the Time Capsule problems.

Hmmm...

No matter how hard I try to steer away from the iMac, I keep coming back. I've been a fan of this machine since I started buying them in 1999 despite my issues with the 11/2009 21.5" model. I'm going to try and wait until the 2011 Sandy Bridge refresh before I get another Mac.

I hope by that time, the iMacs no longer have: hard drive, noise and yellow tint issues.

Until then, I'll try to remain very content with my early 2009 20" refurb.

On the one hand, I'm excited at the extra potential updates... On the other, September/October?!
:(

So torn.

Another waiter here. The biggest reason I am waiting is for the simple fact that the current iMac has been out since October. I cant bring myself to buy a machine for $3,000 that is 9 months old. I don't really care what the update is, it will be the new one which (hopefully) has solved its issues.

Its definitely next week

Hi all,

its official the new imac will be released next Tuesday.

How do i know?

I just gave in and bought mine ... Murphys law says it was a week early :)

May i just say, as a lifelong pc user, this thing is just WOW. I've never set up a new computer this quickly, painlessly or easily. It flies, and it just works.

There has been almost no stress in working out how to do things, so i'm officially a mac person.

Good luck with waiting for the update ... really hope its soon for you all.

Haha thats another reason I have avoided buying one, I just KNOW that a new one will be just days away!

Anyway grats on turning to the Mac side, enjoy your stay!

Sorry, maybe my english is not good enough.... but why are you so sure the updates are next tuesday? Or is it a joke?

So...you don't think a machine with a new cpu, gpu and vastly improved I/O is a "huge" update? You used the phrase "redesign" but we haven't really seen that on any mac product in awhile. Not huge anyway.

Updating the iMac with a new cpu, current graphics and usb 3 would be a radical improvement over the current model, for a few reasons.

We will see what happens.

Like the rest of you I'm waiting for the update to come.

I'm worried that I might have a big decision to make though if the update doesn't come before the end of the BTS promo.

I'm planning on going to the 27" iMac, probably not the top of the range one though as my bugdet can't really take it. Probably the base 27".

I start a teacher training course in September, I have two offers, one of which would qualify for the 14% higher education discount. From what I've read, a PGCE proof of acceptance is enough, however I'm thinking of taking the other route into teaching (where I am employed by the school called GTP) that I don't think qualifies me for the 14% discount.

So basically (assuming the update doesn't come before the end of BTS promo) my decision is...

a) Buy current spec iMac 27" with 14% higher education discount + iPod touch rebate
b) Wait it out until the update comes and lose out on the 14% discount and iPod touch, but gain from the updated spec refresh

What do you recon folks?

*obviously if the refesh comes before September then it's not a problem :D

So...you don't think a machine with a new cpu, gpu and vastly improved I/O is a "huge" update?

Uhh… no?

You used the phrase "redesign" but we haven't really seen that on any mac product in awhile.

Didn't the Mac mini kinda get the "phrase" redesign poured all over it less than a month ago? And that other Apple desktop… can't recall its name right now… get a pretty "huge redesign/update" nine months ago?

Depends on how big the CPU and GPU updates are. If Apple can stick quad core and ATI 58xx in 21.5", then we're talking about a huge update but if it's the normal ~10% speed increase, I wouldn't even talk about an update. New doesn't mean that it's radically better.

USB 3.0 and FW 1600/3200 are very doubtful, I would be surprised to see them in next generation.

I don't understand the talk about redesign. The new design could be worse than current is plus it would be fairly useless unless the innards can be updated to hotter ones (desktop GPUs)

Last week I purchased my first apple computer. 21.5 imac top end model. When I click on a webpage it opens. When I click to stream a movie the movies starts to play. When I click to open an app it opens. Downloads are very fast. THe display is amazing. No scratches; no dust under the screen; no dead pixels; and I can see no yellow shading at all (I tested it). The speakers work well. No need to add speakers imo. When I click sleep it goes to sleep, and it wakes up very fast. I can not hear anything when it is turned on. If I put my ear next to it I can hear it running. It does get very warm, but not hot enough for the fans to run or I just can't hear them. If it runs this well with 4Gb of Ram, why do I need 8Gb of Ram? I read that a lot here. For the basic computer user, aren't the current imac models sufficient?

A lot of people are just infatuated by numbers and names that come with new tech.

Ok I will wait...

That post was awesome! Thanks for the insight! I will wait until next week now. hahaha

If the refresh does come out on Tuesday then "you deserve" (in the words of Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall) "a hug or a cuddle or something".

Heard that the iMac refresh will be after BTS, so will be in Sep/Oct. Hope the base 21.5" will get the i5...

The coming of Steam has changed everything. Now we worry about video card performance and whether our iMacs will be able to play the latest releases this time next year.

Hence the wait....
