Let's see..

1 Power cable for the computer
1 Power cable for the monitor
1 Cable connecting the monitor to the PC
1 Power cable for the speakers
2 Speaker wires, one connecting them to the PC, the other to connect to the other speaker
1 USB cable for the Webcam
1 USB cable for the microphone

So far we're up to 8 wires.

My iMac setup? 1 Cable, the power cable.

That's your setup. I have four externals, speakers, iPhone dock, keyboard and USB hub connected. All those HDs I could have internally in PC, saving 8 wires (all are AC powered). For PC you can add stuff internally. For iMac, you do it via USB or FW800. So, I have at least 15 cables. Not very "cable-free"

Office is graphic / web development. No video editing or anything like that and storage isn't really an issue as the fileserver deals with all that.

Like I say, I am perfectly happy with the 2.66GHz MacPro (Dual Xeon) so if the iMac is AS good as that then I would be happy.

C2D would be fine but as your Mac Pro is dual Xeon (2x dual core Xeon i.e. quad core), the iMac would not be as fast. i5 iMac will be faster and as I said, take a look at refurbs, they get you a lot better deals. i5 will future-proof your purchase and for 300$, it really is worth it

I too have many many USB, FW cables, speakers and the like connected to my iMac. It's a bit of a pain, but at the same time, I still enjoy the "all in one" concept and I figure basic users (and not pro users) will be happy to have a simple setup with minimal cables. Only a minority I guess will be connecting 15 cables to their iMac ;)

I used to have a Mac G5 (same form as Mac Pro) and a G4 tower before that and although they were great machines, I can't say I miss their form factor that much. I like the iMac's "communication/media centre" aspects with the microphone, camera, remote control and screen all built in.

That's why I'm looking forward to that next update! C'mon :apple:!

I hear Starcraft 2 aint as effiecent on the mac as it is on windows. Not that its going to deter me from getting an iMac. But people say that I can run Starcraft 2 on medium with the 4670 but would I be able to run high and play it smoothly if i got it running on bootcamp windows 7?

Is anyone else amused by how many buying decisions are being influenced by Starcraft 2?

Don't get me wrong, it's a perfectly legitimate consideration, but wow.

I'm sure starcraft2 is a big part of the buying decision, but not the ultimate decider. Starcraft IS starcraft, afterall-- the historically most competitive game on the face of the planet :p It looks sooo nice at native resolution on 27 inch screen.

Will it be true?

As student, now I have the iPod promo, pay in 10 months with no interest, and the discount for the printer. I can get a great pack (iMac 21,5" advanced, iPod and a great photo printer, perfect for muy Nikon D90). I also have an iPhone, so :apple: 100%.

Well, I am at the starting point again.

People have said that resellers are running low stock in this thread for fairly long time. It's an indication of an upcoming update but sometimes it takes few months before the update occurs and sometimes it's the next Tuesday so it isn't very accurate indication. We all know that it will happen sooner than later

Thanks.

Well, the promos last till mid September. The problem is that I don't know if I can wait two months more. :(

Funny.

Yesterday i went to my 2 campus computer store and in a "i'm not waiting until october" mood. Asked them about the iMac and they both told me that they didnt had any iMac in stock for the last 2 weeks. I tought about it and decided i would wait.

Today there is this news. Finally i'm quite happy they were both out of stock.

I am very happy about this news. You dream of this day and it never comes, but finally....

What does that mean for harware? Anyone think it's possible Apple utilizes the "new" Fermi cards, or is everybody here sure it will be ATI 5xxx?

If the update happens rather sooner than later, what will be the impact on interfaces? IMO it would seem a bit early for USB 3.0, about this new Firewire interface, a report a few days ago mentioned, i haven't heard before.

Will the price essentially drop or increase?

I am really looking forward to this update for month now and I hope it's gonna be soon, very SOON!

Well the last two years the story was the same. When these announcements were announced the product usually appeared withing two to three weeks. Like clockwork.

That goes for the mac mini's, and imacs.

I am calling it. Since the 21.5's will see the biggest jump in performance.

The Core i3 550 in the low end with 750GB HD.

The Core i5 650 in the mid tier with a 1.5TB HD.

It looks like the base mac will see the biggest jump in performance.

The i3 550 is not much slower or slower at all by a few percentage points than the core i5 650.

I just handed in today the 3.33 E8600 and canceled my order. Hopefully it was the right decision. I will still have a quad core i5 to keep me company from the office. The wife will have to live with it for a few weeks. :p

I wish theyd raise the size of the imac. 21.5 is smallish and 27inch is friggen huge ..... you cant please everyone really lol.

I agree, I've been waiting for an update for a while now, currently have a 20 inch iMac C2D, but thinking a bigger screen would be nice. 1.5 inch not really that much bigger though, so was thinking how nice it would be for a 23 or 24 inch screen. 27 inch is nice and beautiful, but i really don't have the desk room...

They'd be smart to have 21.5, 24 and 27 inch ;)

much more choice!

C'mon Apple. am hoping for an update next Tuesday!!!

Crap, I just received my i7 today. I was waiting for a month and gave up. If this is out in 2 weeks with significant upgrades I'm gonna be hella bummed. I've heard of Apple having a policy of being able to trade back in within two weeks or something to this effect? What are the detail on this? And do they apply to refurbished units?

Yup. 14 days in UK. Dunno about refurbs.

A 24" re-appearance would go down rather well. I could fit up 19" of height into my computer space. The 21.5" is shorter than the current 20" I have there thanks to the different screen aspect ratio, and I think a 24" using 16:9 would just about squeeze in.

That would look huge in my little computer corner :)

Actually the 1.5 seems alot bigger due to the aspect ratio of 16:9. It is as wide as the 24 model. It almost has the same screen real estate as the 24.

24 would be perfect for me as well as my wife complains about the 27 being too big.

As the upper option of CPU's custom upgrades it is quite possible that the 21.5's could go with a quad core option. The price is even cheaper than the 3.33 C2D. $266 for the C2D vs $259 for the i5 750S. Can you say 82W. It's a stretch, but possible.

Check it.

It's 17W hotter, that is ~26%. Not impossible but I wouldn't count on it. There were and still are C2Qs Apple could have used but until 27" gets hexa core, I doubt we'll see quad in 21.5"

I doubt it also. But the new Clarks are 73W. So if Apple wants to use those chips they are going to compensate or intel is as they have made custom chips for Apple in the past. Can you say Core 2 Duo (E8435) from the last generation imacs. As C2D uses 65W and the new Core series uses 73W.

Like I said it's a stretch, but possible.

I hope they fix the problem of the high pitched screen noise when you reduce the screen brightness.

I went through four iMac's and everyone of them had the problem. It is also mentioned on the Apple Support forums with a lot of people having the same problem. The high pitched noise was too annoying for me to live with and apparently comes from the LED inverter or something like that (the same idea as the buzzing noise you get from a dimmer switch).

If they fix that, I will buy a new iMac.

No design changes for sure.
No size changes.

There's no way that amazing new iMac unibody design lasts less than 2 years.

And there's no way they change their minds about screen sizes (21.5" + 27") so quickly.

24" is not gonna happen. 27" is already kinda 24"-ish. (it's only 0.5" taller than the old 16:10 24"). But the workspace is a lot bigger, +60% pixels.

I can see new GPUs, audio output through Mini-DP (like every new Mac since April 2010) and optional Magic Touchpad.

I don't believe in USB 3.0 rumors.

Yes, I think you are right about this. Magic touchpad will be great - the mbp touchpad is hard to live without. There are advantages to moving fingers instead of an entire clenched hand.
