Well I pulled the trigger on 27" i7 8GB RAM today. Purchased at my local Apple store. I am replacing the original Dual G5 Power PC and I purchased it right when they came out and I never worried about the upgrades that came later, so I figured why wait....So far, love it.

I hope you enjoy your new mac iam still waiting for mine placed an order on my birthday June 12 there should be Iam waiting for a iMac thread ;)

What's the hold up?

I bought my iMac from JB HI FI not from the apple store as I saved 260 ozzy bucks the sales guy said he was going to place the order on 14 but I don't think he did. I called him the other day and he said I may have to wait to next Wednesday next time I might get it through apple I also have only 7 days of cooling time in comparison to apples 14 day cooling off period

I have one of the dual G5 Power Mac's too and I'm dying to get a new 27" iMac, but I think I can wait just a little longer. But not that long. :)

Still waiting, and it hurts :(

I have no plans on getting 27inch (if that was the case id buy it now), but the 21.5 high end might see a drastic improvement with the new refresh, though I want one now.

I'll be waiting for a while now

While the refurbished early 2009 iMac I have is somewhat slow (both in processor and esp. in being unable to upgrade the memory), I'm going to wait until later next year at least to get an iMac. That is, if my coworker doesn't buy this one in 2 months. If he does, I'll buy another refurb and lay low until at least early 2012.

The issues apparent in the current gen are enough to keep me away until then, slow machine or no. I really prefer desktop Macs to portable for my primary computer (just returned my 13" MBP). The only thing that would get me to change from an iMac now is the release of a home use (non-workstation) Mac Pro.

Yes this refresh is taking forever. But the upside is that you can get a refurb 27' C2D model for only $1450! That is the best deal on any mac any where.

I know you said you don't want the 27 but you might want to consider it with that price. The 3.06 CD with the 4670 is more power than most people need with a display that cost a $1000.00 by itself. So basically your getting the computer part of the machine for $450.00 which is basically all it is worth.

I bought my dad one and his screen was perfect. My i5 was not. So I traded him for the better screen. I don't notice much difference in day to day use. I also have 13 27's for my business most of them the C2D model with a few i5's. The perfect screen was more important to me than the power of the computer.

Most apple products are overpriced, but not that one.

sorry if i sounded like a noob..
but if i was going for the 21.5" model no matter what
is it worth the wait?

p.s. I am qualified for the BTS promotion.. if that makes any differences.
oh and no, i am not ... extremely in need of a new desktop.. but it would be nice to get rid of my stupid windows desktop which keeps failing on me right now.

Look at the past and you will notice that this update is still within the normal timeframe. Couple times in near past it has taken 11 months without an update

You could wait till early September and buy just before the BTS promo ends. Maybe new iMacs are already out by then. If you don't do any gaming and so on you won't notice any difference on the new one though

We all know that the next update will be July-September, and the iMac's will have a new GPU, and all will have i3/i5/i7's (dual for 21.5 and quad for 27)

However a few times USB3.0 has been mentioned: and the answer has alway been "not until 2012"; but Sandy Bridge will have USB 3.0 (remember this site is called mac Rumors) (Click here)

So the update after the September, will be in May (8 months) and we can expect sandy bridge possessors WITH usb 3.0 and liquid coolingClick here (different link) - durr

And with usb 3.0 we can always dream of blu-ray in the next two updates (September and May)

The apparent May 2011 update will deserve a WWDC - in fact it may be released with the preview of 10.7 which may include support for bluray.

However the September update will be a subtle boring one
and the May/July update will be awesome

"Sources believe that the Sandy Bridge 32nm chips will offer native support for USB 3.0, not only this but we can also expect support for PCI Express 3.0."

Doesn't sound too convincing. Other reports have unfortunately been saying mostly no, especially for mainstream chipsets which iMac uses (LGA 1155 based). Not sure has this been confirmed yet but I wouldn't bet my money on USB 3.0

What about a discrete USB 3.0 controller - I heard that somewhere.

Apple could always just add an express card slot and then the user can buy a converter Express card slot to USB 3.0

Discrete controller is always possible but that's something that is completely up to Apple. Nobody knows. Apple could have added USB 3.0 already with a controller chip. Only time will show us ;)

So it's theoretically possible for apple to implement USB 3.0 in to their systems by the end of the year, (I doubt that they'll put it in the iMac if they do use it, maybe their Mac Pro)

Yeah, it has been possible for pretty long time now. I think you can add it to Mac Pro with 3rd party PCI card already, not 100% sure though. It's like Blu-Ray, the technology exists so it's in Apple's hands, they decide what to do

They mention "Screaming Hot Sandybridge" that "will only complicate things for the iMac," which doesn't make much sense given that the Sandy Bridge successors to Lynnfield are still 95 W (lower if you exclude the integrated GPU).

There is one thing that I would also like in the new iMac's : a HDMI input, that way i can play on my PS3 without moving from my desk - and my TV is downstairs and the router is upstairs, so i would get better connection

Dead Sweet God Apple...

You and me both :( I'm a competitive gamer, participating in local labeled MLG events for small cash prizes and xBox accessories. I'm 20 years old and paying for college out of pocket/savings, and can't afford both a new computer (which I NEED to go along with my graphics and design major) and a HDTV..

As of now for gaming I use the only HDTV in my house, located in the living room. I have a large household, and find myself having to wait until late night to really get some game time in. With Halo Reach coming out September 14th, I will surely be taking part in many local gaming events, and would love to be able to practice and play more on my off time from school than I can on my household's HDTV.

The only solution I can think of within my budget is to get an all in one PC, Mac being priority for graphical work, and the BEAUTIFUL screen which would be outstanding for how I game, which is close to the screen, with 5.1 headset. I know there are HDMI to Mini Display adapters, but it seems gimmicky, and I'm sure there is some kind of lag, even if just .5 seconds which would effect my gaming a lot.

Dead Sweet God Apple... PLEASE :(

Mmm, not necessarily, if you consider this will be a second generation for the 27" and the 21,5", with their new designs. All the multiple issues should be ironed out by then (screen, HD, noise, heat etc..).

Second gen. Macs used to be flawless and perfect, and that is no minor argument compared to the modest speed bump.
OK, next update in 2011 may introduce breaking ground features (but maybe not the ones you're expecting), and ... probably new unknown issues again.

All in all, the September update looks like a killer to me, for a new iMac, big or small.

so... if i'm looking looking 4 a i5 27" refresh. The upcoming one ( sometime this year) will be a small one? but if i wait until mid 2011 there will be a big upgrade? For me the 27" i5 is plenty good enough for me but will the sooner refresh provide a better graphics card... so maybe it's worth waiting but not until the 2011 refresh as it is a long wait...

thanks

Yeah I know but the last two refreshes were within a six month time frame give or take a few weeks. I was hoping they were going to keep that time frame, but obviously that is not the case.

Yeah, it was 7 months between the latest and the update before it. Since late 2006, it's been like 11 months, 8 months, 11 months, 7 months so with that logic it would be 11 months now. Of course this is just my speculation, nothing more. Doubt it will happen any time soon though because Mini got updated a week ago so they would have done it along with Mini

a week has gone by after mac-mini update...... No update. I think at least another 3 week (2nd week of july) or maybe 2nd week of august.... maybe september........ Apple please stop my suffering:(

You know you've been waiting too long for an imac refresh...when you begin having dreams of the imac refresh...:(

Apple Special Event planned? iMacs with iOS?
Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 09:41 AM

LOOPRumors received a tidbit of information today suggesting Apple is planning to develop a hybrid OS into their next iMac.

The iMac should be equipped with both Mac OS X and a touch interface for iOS.
A few weeks ago, Steve Jobs announced that Apple is renaming iPhone OS to iOS. The company has been putting a major focus on Multi-Touch™ since the iPhone’s debut, and adding it to their desktop line is inevitable.

Such a move will assist developers in building and testing iOS apps, while opening up new possibilities for touch-screen computing.
Our source indicates that Apple will release the new iMacs at a Special Event within the next 60 days.
