If you need a laptop, buy a laptop, preferably something other than a Surface. If you need a tablet, buy an iPad Pro.

I'm on my second Surface Pro device. Last week my SP3 battery died. Microsoft's customer service is an absolute joke. I'm now 5 days since it died (this is my work computer) and Microsoft can't even tell me HOW they intend to service it, let alone how long it will take or how much it will cost. So far all I have is a string of promised return calls or emails that never happen, or being put on hold only to be disconnected.

There you go, Apple likely would've replaced the battery free (the one time I used the Apple store I've had then look the other way on an old jailbroken iphone that stopped working and just swap it for a new phone) so you buy customer service too. They generally dont give you too much hassle about it and try to make their customers happy.

And we're talking the Surface 3, not even the Pro, so its even more a dog with the Atom processor. It's not going to replace a real PC either really even if it runs full Windows. It's going to be slow and laggy on intensive/big applications like MS Office.

I28gb Surface Pro 4 with 4gb of ram is $999.
128gb iPad Pro with 4gb of ram is $949.

To be fair, Microsoft includes the surface pen. But you can get the same iPad configuration from B&H now for $879

And also, you're comparing a pro product to a non pro product. You can pick up an iPad Air 2 for $399 now.

Not sure what others experience is, i have an ipad pro 12.9 with the pencil, I love it. But i used a surface 3 with the included pencil, it was like writing with a soggy hotdog in comparison. i didnt say anything to the owner, just handed him my pen and IPP and said try this, he was blown away by the difference.

I just thought of comparing with the MS Surface 3: 128Gb with pen, keyboard, LTE is $840. Ipad pro in the same configuration is $1100. But the surface is in fact a laptop replacement, it can run all windows programs. What are the advantages of the iPad pro, except being somewhat lighter? I had almost decided to get an iPad pro, but now I'm thinking: what about a Surface 3?

I have a 128gb Surface 3 and I have a 128g iPad Pro 12". The iPad Pro is hands down better in every way. The performance of the Surface 3 is abysmal. The processor is not capable of handling most tasks without lag. The battery life on the Surface 3 is also not very good and it takes forever to charge with the micro usb charger.

Yes, battery life is an important consideration. A tablet needs a long battery life.

The Surface products are just as pricey IMO, and offer a very different user experience. But Microsoft quality control is looking pretty spotty lately. Go look at some of the Amazon reviews for the Surface Pro 4 (and the Surface Book). Many have no issues, but there are also tons of negative reviews reporting numerous software and hardware bugs.

I had the surface pro 4 and didn't have any hardware or software issues with it.... Returned it because of poor battery life but otherwise worked great. I had the i5 model with 4GB of ram along with the 128gb ssd

The surface 3.....while is decent it's meant for average users not the ones who want to have 50 tabs open... The surface pro series are way better

I have the same surface 3 with the pen and do all my things without issues. Obviously not as good as the iPad Pro, or surface 4 but how could it be at $500.

If battery life is a primary concern, go with the iPad.

I own as Surface Pro 3 - it's an excellent device, but it just depends on the "experience" you're looking for. If you really want the "Laptop/Desktop Replacement", then the Surface will do that job very well - it just does a very poor job delivering a "tablet experience". It is a Desktop OS computer - with all the advantages and disadvantages that come along with that.

For example - On Windows 10, you really HAVE to use the stylus (or a mouse). There are many things that are just NOT touch-friendly in Windows 10 (Windows 8 was a FAR better experience in my opinion) - even in "Tablet" mode.

For me, the iPad is a MUCH more friendly, hassle-free device/OS to use on a daily basis.

I must say threads like PROVES that Microsoft approach for tablets and hybrids with a full desktop OS Windows is not the right way to go and that the iPad with a mobile OS(IOS) is definitely the right way to go and definitely here to stay! :) :)

I wouldn't necessarily say that... For the mainstream consumer? Yes. There are situations and scenarios where the Surface is absolutely better than the iPad. It's a different way of going and can only be said to be a 'better way to go' in a case-by-case situation.

I would not agree with this statement either and I do own a SP4 and a iPad Pro 9.7. Once, I get the 9.7 Smart Keyboard will decide which one to keep.

It's the right way to go for whom?

The bulk/majority of buyers. People quickly forget the manufacturer didnt build the device to YOUR specs, but the specs of the 99% of customers that they can sell it to. There will ALWAYS be a few % of customers the device wont work for, but you have to make a product you can hit the most people with possible without compromising on; even if you leave some potential buyers behind.

Surface sales show all that needs to be said about that product. Is is nether a great PC nor a great tablet. They tried to get it to do too much and its mediocre overall in most areas.

Pretty general statement. I don't care what the sales are of the sp4; I cannot support my business on an iPad Pro. But what would be telling us sales of Windows 10 laptops vs iPad Pro.

We love our sp4, power of Windows in a tablet form, and it works great for me with the keyboard and as a tablet for what i/we need to do with it. The downside is it only lasts about 5 hours on battery...oh well.

I think people are nuts for paying the prices they pay for the ipad and ipad pro. I mean that with all due respect to ipad owners. It is a beautiful piece of hardware, thin and light, but man that's a lot to pay for a gimped OS.

I was under the impression that surface sales were great, comprising a large portion of MS' profitable arms. BTW it IS a great tablet, but I'd be curious why you think it's not a great tablet, of course with the understanding that we are simply bandying opinions back and forth, it's also a great PC. Besides having great sales the past couple of years they are gaining traction quite a bit as well. I think what would be more interesting would be to see ipad sales the last year or 2 and if they are declining. It all depends on the consumer though as personally the ipad is the pinnacle of mediocrity in my personal opinion.

What are you guys doing on your ipad pros that you cant do on your ipad air 2's?

that is my main issue with the product

unless you are an artist or have a high need for the pencil i just dont get it

I wanted to get a surface pro, but the battery life drove me away to a windows ultrabook(xps13 nontouch skylake). I still happily use an ipad air gen1 as my tablet. It is a bit long in the tooth, but what more do I really need?

I'd hate to lug around a laptop AND an ipad pro when a surface pro does the job just as well usually, and sometimes better. I forget, but you are not in the US right? In the US you can just bring your SP3 right to a MS store and they would swap it out for you in an instant.

the tablet is really just for fun tho eh (doesnt necessarily need to be lugged)? Unless you need full windows in the field with tablet mode, as a doc maybe that fits your use case?

Nobody mentioned it so I just wanted to add, that the iPad pro is about as twice as fast as the non pro surface3 (cpu)
Not even talking about graphics power. (where it even beats the Surface Pro 4 by far)

So, hardware is definitely way better.

but there is really no software that exists to take advantage of the superior hardware. the biggest user facing difference is probably battery life

Your not really comparing apple to apples here.... X86 and ARM are completely two different platforms.
