! to get ! or ¡
' to get ‘ or ' or ’
" to get » or « or ” or " or “ or „
& to get & or §
$ to get ₩ or £ or $ or € or ¥

Love this one. Thanks

I'm still reading through the whole thread, but to add to this, press and hold the 0 (zero) and you will get the little degrees symbol

Caps lock, keyboard shortcuts. & Adding "Emoji" --smiley icons.

I always double-tap the shift key to activate Caps Lock.

This works as long as you have Caps Lock enabled (I'm not sure if enabled/disabled is the default), check out Settings>General>Keyboard for this and other keyboard shortcut settings.

Here you can also add the "Emoji" icons (some version of iOS 4 and later) so you can use smiley icons in iMessage like this :) ...(in iOS 5) In the same place click on International Keyboards, Click on "Add New Keyboard..." then find "Emoji" in the list and click on it. Now on your keyboard there will be a new world icon to the left of the spacebar. Click on this to switch to the Emoji layout, there are pages of smileys and click on the bottom icons for more. Keep in mind, these are not enabled by default because they only are visible on iOS devices and they are Japanese, so some symbols make more sense to that culture. ...Just click on the world icon at bottom left to switch keyboards. (In iOS 4 I think the procedure is similar but you find Emoji under Japanese layouts, I think.) This works on any iOS device. (Previous to some version of iOS 4, one had to download a special utility app, and go through certain steps to get this to work.)

KEEP IN MIND: however you use this, the Emoji icons will only been seen on your/other iOS devices, non-iOS devices will get some kind of jumbled text code instead of the icons.

Ipad 3 - new tips - backspacing

Hi,

These tips are very interesting.

Just got a new iPad 3.

When typing text, how do you back space.

I can't find a shortcut or there is no key to operate this.

the key is top right next to the "P", instead of saying "delete" or "backspace" it just has an "x" w/point to left: <x ...if you are using emoji it is located near the right of bottom row. ...if you are not using US english keyboard, IDK. ...don't be afraid to try all the keys to see what they do. ...if you have all caps turned on in your settings, you quickly double click the shift (up arrow) key and it turns the key blue...all letters will be in caps until you click on shift again. If you click on it once it turns the arrow blue and will make only the first letter you press after this capitol, then returns to lower case.

That key is "Delete," but it is not "Backspace." A true backspace moves the cursor back one letter (or more, if you keep holding down the key) without deleting the letter(s). On a regular Mac keyboard the backspace would be the left arrow key. I too wish backspacing were possible on the iPad.

I never turn off mine. It's iOS, it doesn't need frequent restarts.

That said, doing it about once a week can clear out caches etc that might bork things later.

It's also a good move to let the battery run completely down like once every two weeks. Then straight onto a charger. Keeps it calibrated. But it really doesn't need more than that. If you generally manage to get it under 20% 2-3 times a week you could probably run it down only once a month

it is, just not a key.

press your finger down in any text and a loupe comes up. You can then roll the cursor to wherever you like. When you let go you'll get the select/select all and then cut/copy/paste. or you can ignore that and type

Good to know. Thank you!

You can also double tap on a word and that word will be selected, drag the little round points to extend your selection then cut/copy/paste or <x delete (or start typing and that text is deleted)

I've not heard of the cursor arrow keys being called backspace, but those are available via a Bluetooth keyboard. Technically, backspace, while it goes back one letter, it also deletes it, the delete key on an extended keyboard deletes the letter to the right of the cursor, this is the key I miss.

Lost your iPad, iPhone...?

I have to use a pass lock due to work corporate restrictions, if you lose your device and someone honest finds it they have no idea who it belongs to and can't open it either.
Ok you can use your Find my xxxx app if its a sim model but as I said if someone honest finds it they can't find you.
I took a screenshot of my home screen picture and put it into a photo editing program and added a box that says " this iPhone/iPad belongs to xxxxx, if found please call xxxxxx" giving an alternate number if its your iPhone, I then placed this so it sits just below my pass lock box.
Anyone finding it will have a contact number and all content is still secure, the other problem is with a passcode they can't get in to connect to a wifi for you to trace it anyway, only with a SIM card model.
I found an iPhone once and had to wait for ages until someone rang it to find out who owned so I could return it.

While I applaud your ingenuity, are you sure it needs a sim to utilize the Find My iPad feature? I have a wifi only 4, and the language in the iPad User Guide mentions nothing about sim-only to activate it. It just needs to have iCloud enabled and a wifi connection. From the iOS 6 book:

“Find My iPad
Find My iPad can help you locate and secure your iPad using the free Find My iPhone app on another iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, or using a Mac or PC web browser signed in to www.icloud.com.

Find My iPad includes:

Play Sound:* Play a sound for two minutes.

Lost mode:* You can immediately lock your missing iPad with a passcode and send it a message displaying a contact number. iPad also tracks and reports its location, so you can see where it’s been when you check the Find My iPhone app.”

any idea how to remove old sold devices from find my ipad?

any idea how to remove old sold devices from find my ipad?

Login to iCloud.com then go to the Find my Mac section and click devices at the top left. You should see your old device in that list. Click the right arrow to the right side of the device and you will get a screen asking if you want to delete the device from the list.

If honest person finds iPad

If you have a case on it, try some ancient technology. Just write your name and another contact number or email on the inside of the case. An honest person will find it and contact you.

Not sure if these have been mentioned.

Pull apart the keyboard with you thumbs when holding the iPad with 2 hands.

Go to keyboard/shortcuts in settings. Make your email address the phrase and the shortcut @@ (or whatever). If you need to enter your email address then just type @@. You could also do one for your address or name etc

I just discovered the very same around a week ago. Has helped me a lot yet. Anyways, thanks for the post.

Icons added to iMessage

Just got a new mini- sent some text messages and noticed pink lips next to my message- anyone know how you eliminate that or get rid of them??

iPad tricks.

Thank you so much. Having to hit the numbers/symbols button every time I needed an apostrophe was ridiculous!! This trick will be super handy!!!

Also, if you press and hold the numbers/symbols button you can slide your finger to the symbol you want. When you release your finger on the symbol you want, the keyboard automatically goes back to the main keyboard.

Find on page/move keyboard

When in the search bar, look on the keyboard for a "find on page" bar to search within the web page (similar to command F on Macs) and with your finger in between the right "123” key and the "hide keyboard" key and slide up it will move the keyboard.

Hold the "keyboard hide" button and drag up and down to move keyboard

Inside Find My iPhone, sign in and click on "Devices"(top left). You will see your current device with a green dot and the old ones with a grey dot. Slide your finger from extreme right to left on the devices with the grey dot. "Delete" will pop up and you can delete the device from inside the Find My iPhone app.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand this. I don't see what you refer to as "a 'find on page' bar" on the keyboard, whether I'm doing a general search for something on the iPad, or searching on a web page in the browser. Would you please elaborate/clarify? Thank you.

Is it possible that you chose the lips as your Mail avatar?

Oh dear some people really don't have anything better to do.

It's pedantic, pompous, pathetic and pointless to endlessly correct people's spelling and grammar on this forum do people not take a moment to think that other forum users might not have such a great grasp of the English language?

Most people using the little Ipad pop up keyboard...miss spell words...without a real keyboard, the dedication to syntax and correct grammar and spelling get's in the way of "fast inane, self serving, narcississtic, computer age, communications"...creating a new form of grammar where you "have to guess" what someone meant to say.

It's the way it is...and it comes from the restrictions of hand held portable communications technology: small keyboards, small screens.

Part of this lack of grammar is also the fact that people are communicating so rapidly (instantly) with so many others as they multi task themselves into oblivion...while walking down the street? When a culture dashes off so many comments, replies, etc...to so many people...nobody "can take their crap too seriously" on a discussion forum to ever bother with the rigidity of mutally agreed upon rules of communication (grammar, spelling, syntax).

Quantity over Quality.

People are living their lives in ever widening circles reaching out to anybody and everybody...never knowing who they are talking to, and never really seeing them or hearing the inflection of their voice...or body language.

Are people becoming more self absorbed and sloppy?

Are we stupidifying ourselves with banalites and empty replies...in an attempt at feeling connected with so many phoney friendslist contacts on Facebook?

Is anyone really connected to anybody?

It's a fast passed multi tasking world....and grammar and spelling lost out in a mad cap rush to shoot your arrow into the sky as many times.... without a care where the target is, almost as though the mantra "...the unaimed arrow never misses the mark..." has becomed internalized?

If the unaimed arrow never misses, then it hit the mark...some mark at some time...no?

Should we watch the movie Network, and join Howard Beale sticking his head out the window, screaming, "...I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore..."?

One way or another......if you want to laugh at Bill O'Reilly's sloppy Narcississtic facade...find a youtube video called "Bill O'Reilly-King Dildo"...you'll laugh...for sure.

You'll see in this video...O'Reilly repeating Howard Beale, after being sued for sexual harassment.

Cheers.
