A thread to discuss all things iPhone between Android users and others. Since we’re in the Android section of an Apple forum, we should be more inclined to appreciate the benefits of both Android and Apple without attacking either platform or users. Let’s keep the discussion intelligent and positive.

I really wanna switch back to android and as dumb as this sound iMessage is really holding me back. My.whole family, work colleagues and basically 95 percent of the people I chat with are on iMessage via group chats and such. I know it wouldn't be the end of the world if I switched but it's just such a inconvenience. The s21 looks tempting , I may try and pry some people on to using what's app more often. I do really love my 12 pro max but I love the direction Samsung Is going

I read that if you have a Mac pc you can make it work with Samsung and any Android

Both have their own place in the market. People prefer to use both android and iPhone and that too because they love to do it. So as of now there is no comparison.

iMessage is probably one of the biggest things that keep me with iPhone. I have owned very MANY android phones and SMS / MMS has never proven to be reliable for me. I enjoy the android OS but not as a phone.
Everyone I know uses Whatsapp no matter what platform they're on. I've never understood this USA iMessages dealbreaker. It's baffling to us Brits.🤔

I’m British and probably 98% of the people I know use iPhone. I use both messaging platforms though, iMessage for individual texts and WhatsApp for group chats.
So someone with an Android phone would be able to message you with zero problems and vice versa.

Honestly, apart from a few of my closest friends I have positively no idea which of my friends, colleagues and acquaintances use which particular platform and frankly I don't care. I buy the phone I most want and what other people own factors zero percent in my decision.

Yeah that’s the beauty of WhatsApp for media sending. I don’t really care what others use either, I buy what I like too. The ratio I mentioned is just observational and just the way it is. It is handy being on iOS for immediate family for me though as between my wife and both sets of parents, we share a lot of photos and use photo stream. Whatever works I say

I personally don’t use iMessage at all.
Even when I’m on iPhone as I swap between obviously.
WhatsApp is just so universal and easy to use, I really like it.
I personally never used WhatsApp and the ironic part about your post... I don't have a iPhone and I use iMessage regularly.

My family and friends use iMessage, I would think it's much more easy to use compared to any other messaging platform. Primarily, because it's integrated into the OS. My family don't have to worry about installing it or setting it up nor sign up isn't required.

I can count on one hand how many peeps I know use Whatsapp... Maybe 3 tops... It's great for cross platform though... but still nothing easier than Imessage and FaceTime... I can understand why it's convenient..

Good for you man.
I mean, setting up WhatsApp by tapping your phone number in and hitting confirm is a big job.

I sense a sarcastic tone.

I never used WhatsApp, so I can't really comment on the sign up aspect of it. I'm sure WhatsApp is an awesome messaging platform, it has billions of users. But, I'm just saying how easy iMessage is and how admirably it is implemented into the OS.

Well yeah lol. I mean obviously people are going to be different to me and use iMessage. It’s a great app and does lots of things well. But all I was saying is that even with an iPhone, I don’t use it. I have never really liked it as an app. It decides when it wants to send a green and blue bubble. It often just decides to send from an email address. You have to stop it notifying you of the same message twice. Finding a gif to share with someone isn’t easy or intuitive.

For me, all of these things are easier on WhatsApp. And it’s free. And it’s cross platform. One thing iMessage is certainly not.

I'm very platform agnostic. My family use iMessage and FaceTime as does everyone in my office. It's a tough thing for me to leave behind but all the same may do it. Was playing with a Pixel 5 and really enjoyed it.

I used to not like Google phones. I had a Nexus 5 and didn't really like pure Android or that LG phone much. So I hadn't considered another till I got my Pixel 4a for it's cheap price.

Now I like it so much, some time down the road I want to get the 4a 5G or maybe the P5 and im not even considering the Samsung 21 and SS has been what I've used the most.

WhatsApp’s Popularity Abroad vs. In the US

In the United States we have flat rate SMS texting that comes standard on nearly all phone carriers whereas in other countries it can cost on average $0.11 per text. This is not the whole of it though. It is because the US caters solely to the domestic market. The rest of the world is on the globalization train with friends and business taking place in neighboring countries and across the globe. The app is necessary to chat with friends abroad. International text messaging in the US is expensive regardless of carrier but in general we have less of a focus on making and maintaining these friendships. Internationalism is not part of our cultural framework. The one- third of US app users are primarily travelers or people who have been abroad. Students going abroad will download the app before leaving and even if they don’t get a local phone number once they arrive, they can give out their US number.
It baffles the majority of the world, not just the Brits! “Only in America” never rang so true...

I'm surprised under Apple recent surge on priviicy that the blue/green bubbles exist anymore

Seems you would have to be extremely careful how you communicate with 3rd parties if you do not wish to spam your an Apple product owner, which is useful marketing data to some

AT&T has an excellent promo making the final cost of the Pixel 5 roughly $250 off. Placing an order momentarily. Going to keep the XR around as backup - it's not really worth anything, front and back are extremely cracked (unfortunate motorcycle incident in the summer). Works fine, looks bad, not worth fixing out of warranty or trying to sell.

Haven't touched Android since a brief stint with a Galaxy S8. This'll be fun.

What made you decide to give Android another try?

Mostly just curiosity. I enjoyed my S8, but only kept it around for a year.

I'm a light user so I don't do anything particular that favors one phone over the other - aside from my workplace and family being extensive iMessage users. I primarily use Google email and cloud services too. I'm hopeful that on Android, Spotify will play nicer with the old BMW iDrive in my car and allow me to see track info and skip/rewind. I don't play games on my phone much but, I'm excited that I'll be able to load up an emulator and just play some Sega Genesis when I'm bored now too. The camera also looks to be a huge upgrade from my XR.

IOS has majority market share in United States and combined with iMessage and FaceTime built in it’s not surprising.

I only have one contact that uses android, everyone else is on IOS and iMessage and FaceTime work great.
