I wish smaller phones had huge batteries, I am starting to get tired of huge smartphones, they're a pain in the butt to use one handed if even possible.

I have to give Google credit, for making a smaller Pixel 5 with incredible battery life.
I am just the opposite as far as phones size goes. I love the size of the Note 20U and 11 Pro Max. I use my Pixel 4 Xl and it feels so small ?.

But you are right.....I am not sure the N20U or 11PM could be used one-handed.

I changed the title, so hopefully that helps. I rarely go into any other forum sections on this website, and I’d prefer to discuss the iPhone with non-iPhone zealots. The iPhone is like a religion to people in the iPhone section, and there’s really no reasonable discussion to be had there about the iPhone.

Well, if you don't tell, I certainly won't. ;)

Sure, let OEMs decide whether they want to upgrade to the next major Android version. But I wish Google would own the monthly security patches instead of letting the OEMs do it. It's already shown that some OEMs just don't care, or even faked their security update info to fool users into thinking they are already updated.

Y'know, I'm not really certain I know why Google went down that path to begin with. Was it to placate carriers which wanted to differentiate feature sets, or to charge users to use the hardware they already owned (like AT&T charging users to use the built-in GPS functionality of their own smart phone?)... anyhow, whatever the reason was, it was in my opinion not really well and fully thought through on Google's end, and it's really come back to bite the community since. Oh, and the term for all of this is called "fragmentation". I seriously hate fragmentation.

Also, the idea of having a phone that will have proper software support for years. Even if I buy an iPhone XR today, I know that it will still get at least 3 years worth of updates. In contrast, 3 years is the best even Google can offer on their own Pixel phones. Now this wasn't an issue many years ago, where each year you get significant improvements. But now, even a phone from 2 to 3 years ago are actually still good enough for most (barring the battery health). It's sad that we are dumping so many good phones just because the company stopped supporting the software. I understand that one cannot expect a company to support the phone forever, but I don't think it's unreasonable to demand at least 5 years of support, especially for $1000 flagships.

One would think these companies, in the midst of them trying to be socially and environmentally responsible, would actually not want to be the cause of filling landfills even faster. Or worse, all the horrific dump-n-burn and hazardous materials scavenging of phones, computers, TVs, etc., which has been documented in all its evil, over in Africa. Just sad. But yeah... no, they don't actually give a firetruck about any of that.

I also am liking the "cleaner" iOS, in a sense that there are no 3rd party bloatware. Everytime I reset my Android phone, I have to spend time uninstalling/disabling the included 3rd party bloatware. Android is basically like Windows in a sense. It gets annoying after a while.

The reality here is that there is an inherent necessity for regular consumers to be tech experts just to have good hardware, which of course is nowhere near reality. My latest four smart phones have been the Nexus 4, the Nexus 6, the Moto G7, and the Moto G Power. But, my decision to buy those particular bits of hardware was dependent upon my existing tech enthusiast background. So yes, there's hardware out there to be had with no bloatware, but I take your point about many having it.

And then the choice. With so many Android OEMs making so many phones, there is simply a phone for your specific wants/needs. Want a cheap phone that looks modern? Easy. Want the bleeding edge foldable tech? You got it. The choice is great, and it democratizes access to technology, which crucial in these days and age.

And if that was all there was to be said about it, I would probably never have started looking at getting an iPhone.

Are any of you waiting for and getting the iPhone 12 Pro Max?
I’m on the fence as to what I’m going to do this year but I am heavily leaning toward the 12 Pro Max.
My purchase history has been to buy an iPhone every 2-3 years and a Pixel, XL model, every year. This might be the first year I skip the Pixel line and spend a little extra on the Pro Max model.

Do the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro have bezels that are the same size? If so, the only reason to even go with the Pro is for the extra RAM.

Form factor for the 12 and 12 Pro is EXACTLY the same...Apple‘s cases are for both the Pro and regular 12 models.

At this point, I’d only recommend someone choose the Pro if they have a need for the telephoto lens. Otherwise, the differences are next to nil.

I’m waiting to preorder the Pro Max...never had a doubt about choosing this model. I love phone with large displays—I’d be happy if the Pro Max was even bigger, in fact. ?

I handle so much of my quick mobile interactions right on my Apple Watch so when I’m actually using my phone, I’m usually in a position to use it with two hands if necessary. My aging eyes appreciate the extra display real estate.

Anyways, waiting until November 6 feels like an eternity at this point. Looking forward to finally getting some new tech toys. With PS5, Xbox Series X and iPhone 12 Pro Max all arriving during that week, going to be a lot of fun.

I'm getting the Pixel 5 this week (if Black Friday deals happen, I'll get the difference from Amazon). If I can deal with the small size then I'll stick with that until next fall. But if the size and cutbacks are too much, then I'm either going with the 12 Pro Max or buying my friends Fold 2 that he wants to sell.

Same here, no doubt. I decided to try a mid size phone for a year, with the 11 Pro, but I’m missing the wow factor of huge phones too much.

My favorite thing with using Mac + iOS right now is spotlight searching for a word on my iPhone and having it instantly find a work document on my Mac desktop for quick reference. Utterly useful for my job. Now I can do that decently with the 11 Pro, but I miss having a large enough screen for really reading a text doc/spreadsheet, or even editing them (comfortably) on the fly.

I will miss the smaller size for summer days without a jacket though. But I might end up solving that by eventually also getting a cheap small iPhone like the SE 2020... Also a nice excuse for getting another device of course :p

But yeah, really looking forward to the biggest iPhone ever. And I agree, I wouldn’t complain if they made em even bigger!

I'm sure some love it but MagSafe seems a bit unnecessary. Are people really that clumsy they're forever knocking their phone off their wireless charging pads? And why have it inside the case, it's not like cases ever fall off. Makes even less sense if battery size reduction was needed to accommodate it.

I also noticed Apple don't have leather cases this year. I always find the silicone ones much more awkward taking in & out of a pocket because of the grip they have. Always loved their leather ones.

From my understanding, MagSafe is mostly for those times when you set your phone down on the charger at night, it says it starts charging, and then it stops sometimes during the night and it’s still at 30% when you wake up.

The magnets in the case are so that the charger still attaches with the same strength even with a case on.

They do have leather cases, but they’re not out until November sometime.

It almost feels like Apple is solving a problem that really doesn't exist for most people. I have an upright charger by my nightstand that charges my phone and AW. I have never once had it knocked off the charger...even with dogs around all the time. The phone only fits one way on the charger as well.

But I do see MagSafe being extremely useful in cars. I could see myself buy some kind of MagSafe car mount in the future.

I got the MagSafe desktop charger last week. I can verify that it does work with other magnetic case makers like Rok-Form. I have this one for my 11 Pro max and if works great!

Yup...I can see some utility in MagSafe but not a must use component of the new iPhones. I too can't wait for a good vehicle mount that utilizes MagSafe.

That being said, I'm now genuinely fearful of a future iPhone sans input port. Not kidding when I say it would take something earth shattering to bring me back to a port-less iPhone in the future.

Being outside the reserve has a price to pay too, for the inconvenience of a terribly fragmented (aka ‘open’) ecosystem.

You are quite right. I didn't say everything - in my case, the construction of any ecosystem ends with the interaction of a phone - computer - sports watch (not a smartwatch; and that's only because the watch manufacturer did not create an application for Linux, so I cannot connect the watch to the computer directly). And the computer is the central place (DLNA server). Yes, I sometimes listen to music on large speakers connected to the TV but DLNA is fine for me. I listen to music in a car but BT is enough for me.

My needs are more modest, which makes the ecosystem less important. I just got rid of the iPad, because I didn't really need it. I gave my wife a Logitech Crayon to write on her iPad - she used it maybe several times in a few months. I am just at the stage of getting rid of unnecessary things and putting my surroundings in order ;)

I like to ride a bike, I have two, both from a sports market, one was very cheap, the other a little more expensive. The prices of better bikes seemed crazy to me, but in the meantime I paid more for the Sony Xperia 5 II than for the bike :) I just feel bad with it ...

This. 100 percent. iOS apps are largely better looking and more functional, IMO, and Apple Watch emphasis this even more. Apple Watch apps put Android Wear apps to shame.
As a current galaxy watch 3 user I can't wait to use my series 6 apple watch. Its not even close.. I want to sell the galaxy watch as quite frankly its lagging behind badly

Not hating on watch users but genuinely curious, what is the killer feature that everyone loves about them? I see this comment a lot about people loving their watches but I haven’t had the same experience. I have an Apple Watch that I wore a week when it came out and it’s been in a desk ever since.

This is my fear as well. I think in the next year or 2 we will see a port less iPhone. Meaning Apple will push its customers to a more services driven experience. You will only get music through Apple Music. Backups will be over the air. No attaching to a computer of anykind.

Imho this is not a good thing....

I tried the Galaxy watch 3 recently for 3 weeks. It was too big and bulky and did not come close tot he user experience on my AW5

It’s just superior in basically all areas

Fitness it’s far more realistic. The miles/steps is off compared to Apple Watch

Apps wise the different is massive. There are one or two apps that’s useful but the rest aren’t really worth downloading. Even Spotify i think is an epic fail really. You can’t just play music on the watch and it work on your headphones. On the Apple Watch you just put your air pods in and ply music from your watch and it just works. The Spotify app seems rather pointless on the the galaxy watch as to listen to music you have to still use your phone which i think kind of goes against the point of using it.

Fall defection, ECG actually works where my experience the fall defection does not work at all on the galaxy watch. Don’t think ECG even works on the galaxy watch yet.

I know this isn’t a galaxy watch issue but be able to have notifications in real time. Galaxy watch wise i do get tired of only a few apps coming through on time. So while this isn’t a big deal on my fold 2 when it’s just coming through the phone getting all come through at once is annoying on the watch

The list is so long I’m not even gonna try to cover it all...

Receiving messages on the go and being able to reply to them with voice dictation or scribble is huge for me, when the phone isn’t near me or in a pocket when I have my hands full or whatever. I’m especially impressed my AW lets me reply to WhatsApp messages which it doesn’t even have a dedicated watch app for.

Since upgrading from AW gen 1 to 5, to my shock I can actually answer a phone call with no audio issues whatsoever using the watch only. I’ll be washing up manually and someone calls, I tap reply without breaking my stride and I can even keep going with the water running right next to the watch and both me and the caller can hear each other fine. Still a wow experience for me after 6 months owning it.

Then there’s having my digital tickets on the wrist, starting timers and setting alarms and reminders using voice, taking notes with voice dictation, checking my pulse as I have a slightly elevated health risk there, asking Siri to calculate stuff or convert units (although she’s admittedly horrible otherwise, still, compared to google assistant...), seeing weather info at a glance and being able to call up detailed hourly forecast in an instant, having the watch auto unlock my Mac or locked Notes so I don’t have to type those passwords all the time, pinging my iPhone when I’ve misplaced it, and of course notifications, notifications, notifications... Oh and music controls.

That’s what I got without even thinking about it, others will have more to add I’m sure. I’ve used an AW since they were first released and I don’t see myself ever stopping, unless one day I feel the need to go off grid or drop all personal tech gadgets or something (an urge that actually hits me from time to time hah).

EDIT: ah, so maybe you were actually asking about the AW as compared to the Galaxy Watch, in that case my bad. I guess some of my points are actually AW only though, so I’ll just be lazy and leave it all as I wrote it sorry :p

For all that is said about the quality of Apple products, I bought a silicone case yesterday from John Lewis.
First case I out on in the car outside the shop, drove off and noticed a piece of purple silicone on my hand. Stopped and checked the case, and two chunks had come off the rim of the case.

Thankfully I did put it on in the car and didn’t wait until I got home as this is not a local shop to me (45 min drive).

Anyway they let me swap it out straight away and the new one was fine.
Until this morning... noticed this as I set my phone on my desk this morning.

So that's 2 silicone cases that have both done the same thing. Pretty annoyed if I'm honest as that's just crap quality control. I'd understand if I was rough with it but pieces are just falling out with no rhyme or reason why. Maybe its the colour of it. I dunno.

Sorry that happened to your case. I’m actually very wary about buying their own cases as they’re so expensive and last year I remember there were a bunch of issues too. Especially with their clear case, which is the style I usually prefer.

Speaking of which, the MagSafe clear case design is just...I dunno man  Did they really have to make the magnets stark white like that?
