It took me a few times with an iPhone 4 (that was previously running 4.3.5) and an up-to-date MBP with Lion and the latest iTunes.

I kept getting the same message and was getting MORE than frustrated  but it finally worked.

As others have stated, I think it's the usual "mad dash" to the Apple servers that's causing the error. Just keep trying....over and over...it will eventually work. :apple:

Stuck with iTunes reading "Verifying iPhone Restore with Apple" and iPhone stuck at the USB + iTunes connection screen. :( Been this way forever now.

iPhone worked first time, iPad took 14 attempts before it worked (fingers crossed, is now restoring apps). I didn't do anything people have suggested, I just kept hitting the restore button until it worked.

Oh great, now the alternating Apple logo and spinner has stopped, now I have a blank screen and the iPhone is not showing up in iTunes.

No combinations of home / power pressing make any difference.

It's as dead as the proverbial dodo...

Now what?

I'm in the same boat. Currently, I'm doing a hard reset (home + sleep) until iPhone turns off. Then plug-in the USB cable whilst holding the home button - the 'Connect to iTunes' logo appears and iTunes detects my iPhone.

However, still in an endless cycle of the restore failing.

Pretty poor show, Apple.

I did a twin hard-reset, after that it win't startup in any way, shape or form.

I wouldn't mind too lucy, but it's the wife's...

Working !

4 steps not fail to make icloud working :
1 update osx to 10.7.2 takes 10 to 15 min and reboot
2 in iphone, ipod and ipad remove apps : remote, keynote, pages, numbers, imovie
3 sync to backup (without upgrading to os5) and upgrade all apps in itines 1st
4 after sync remove usb from mac and reconnect and start upgrade to os5

I tried on iphone 4 and 3gs and ipad 1 followed those steps and is working fine for all 3

Yeah, this has to be a server side problem. I updated my iPhone with no problems but my iPad 2 keeps showing this error right after the backup phase is completed. I've tried about a half dozen times now, with restarts and resets between a few of them with the same result. One assumes that it'll clear up as the day goes forward and people get finished doing the updates. We're at 6:45pm on the East Coast, so there's probably a pretty heavy load on the servers right now.

Folks,

I GOT IT WORKING!

My antivirus (AVG on personal laptop and McAfee on work laptop) was blocking access to the Apple servers. I disabled AV and >BOOM< it worked!!

Give it a try!!!

My iPad2 update failed at the very end with the error and then it asked me to attempt a restore several times but it failed every time .

The whole time I had my iPad with the smart cover on. I picked it up and it was going through the initial setup of iOS5. My iPad seems to have updated successfully but iTunes seems to think otherwise.

Airplane Mode

Put it in airplane mode, folks. After several failed attempts, just did two iphones in airplane mode on the first try. Don't know why, but it works.
