I finally played with an XR at the Apple store. I’m simply spoiled by the X/Xs screen. The XR screen is basically like using an iPhone 6 screen. I can tell the resolution difference immediately.

That would be false.apparently the XS screen effectively has a lower screen ppi than the XR due to the the way lcd and oled screens differ in layout.
720p good and nice....
That would be false.
What I noticed today really irked me. I even confirmed it with Apple Support. Text size on the XR, In standard view, is noticeably smaller than that on the XR. If you switch to Zoomed mode on the XR, and the text equals that of the XS. The issue is that changing text size in Settings has no impact whatsoever on text and apps such a Safari. I don’t want to have HUGE menu text to get the normal text size I’ve had for years.
I like really small text, second to smallest setting. I can imagine many will not like how small text is unless they switch to Zoomed mode.
The iPhone 6s' Zoomed Display mode turns it into a giant iPhone 5.
The iPhone 6s Plus Zoomed Display mode turns it into a giant iPhone 6s.
The iPhone XR Zoomed Display mode turns it into a big iPhone XS.
The iPhone XS Max Zoomed Display mode turns it into a giant iPhone XS.
Remember, the smaller the points per inch, the bigger the fonts:
Screen height of 6s is 4.1". iPhone 5 vertical screen points is 568, so Zoomed Display is 138 points per inch.
Screen height of Plus is 4.8". iPhone 6s vertical screen points is 667, so Zoomed Display is 139 points per inch.
Screen height of XR is 5.5". iPhone XS vertical screen points is 812, so Zoomed Display is 148 points per inch.
Screen height of XS Max is 5.9". iPhone XS vertical screen points is 812, so Zoomed Display is 138 points per inch.
So for Zoomed Display mode:
5/SE: No Zoomed Display
6/7/8: 138
Plus: 139
XR: 148
XS: No Zoomed Display
XS Max: 138
For Standard Display mode:
5/SE: 163
6/7/8: 163
XR: 163
Plus: 154
XS: 153
XS Max: 153
This means that the 6/7/8, Plus, and Max all have about the same font sizes in Zoomed Display mode with the points per inch at about 138-139.
In native mode, the 5, 6/7/8, and XR are all the same at 163, and the Plus, XS, and XS Max are all about the same at 153-154.
The XR's Zoomed Display Mode is the odd one out at 148, a medium font size. This actually works out well for my wife. She wants bigger than native 163, but doesn't really need as big as 138, so 148 is good. In truth, that's only a little bit bigger than the native font sizes of the Plus, XS, and Max.
Very interesting. This is interesting. I utilize display zoom on my XR.
For a good explanation, forum member @EugW posted this in answer to a question of mine in another thread:
Were it not for display zoom on the XR, I may have ended up with a XS.

Here is the link to reddit where I found first reports of burn in.I’m honestly intensely curious about these reports of burn-in. Would you mind linking me to reports/info about burn-in on iPhones? I’m really interested to read the details.
I did search this forum and can’t find anything. I do see another thread where you mentioned the same issue...someone then asked for further details, and you told them to google it. So maybe the reports came from somewhere else? Anyway, I tried and failed. Maybe my google-fu isn’t as strong as I thought it was.
EDIT: just to clarify, here's the specific post I'm referring to - https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...to-the-iphone-xr.2150427/page-2#post-26715898
Great that your enjoying the XR. For me though I love OLED too much. But the XR will be very popular. I already hear casual people talking about upgrading to the XR from their 6 and 6s.

I have not heard of any reported of burn in. I’m also interested in where that info is from.
‘ The iPhone XS and XS Max both have a 463 PPI, but strictly speaking, the XR has a sharper display. The more expensive iPhones have a PenTile OLED matrix display with 2 sub-pixels per pixel compared to the XR’s 3. Hence, the iPhone XS and XS Max effectively have a pixel density of 302 PPI because of their fewer sub-pixels.’

They seem to know what they are talking about.
To me it’s better. Everyone has different eyes and may not notice differences. I’m near siighted so I do hold the screen a bit closer. No reason to get angry. If you keep telling yourself, and us, that enough you might actually start to believe it.
I’m out on the road with my husband. He’s got his Max and I have my Xr both on AT&T. He’s consistently stuck on 4G when I have LTE. Seems his phone is also slow to let go of the 4G signal when mine will quickly let go d 4G and find the LTE.
We are driving out in the middle of nowhere. But when I’m down to one bar of 4G internet performance seems pretty good...he’s streaming music and it comes in well.
Currently he has 1 bar of 4G and I have 3 of LTE.
I’m not happy or smug about this. I want the XS/XS Max to be better because it’s supposed to be and folks are paying for that. Apple needs to fix this. I had a Max too for a week and yes it had problems, too, but I was more concerned with pwm giving me migraines at the time.
I’m happy for us but dang...this situation stinks for Max and XS owners. I really loved most aspects of my Max. It was a beautiful phone. Made me sick as could be, but it was gorgeous. Oh well. Long live the bright yellow cuteness!I too experienced a lot of connectivity issues with the XS and XS Max. The XR I haven’t had those issues with at all.

So it’s now been a week of using my iPhone XR and it is fantastic. I love this iPhone. It’s one of the best iPhones that Apple has ever released. It has a fantastic balance between function and form.
One of my favourite aspects of the iPhone XR is the fact that it uses a gorgeous LCD panel and OLED burn in is something that requires no consideration whatsoever. You simply have the option of using your display at any brightness for any given period of time. The LCD display to me looks no different in terms resolution in normal use to that of the OLED. I also find that the LCD in this iPhone doesn’t have that horrible glare that OLEDs seem to emit that over long periods of use can cause eye fatigue. The screen real estate is great, it’s the perfect in between at 6.1” to enjoy your content and not have a phone that is unwieldy and cumbersome.
The battery life of this iPhone is far better than that of the iPhone XS and even the XS Max, it’s fantastic! You can get through a full day without an issue and have plenty of juice left over for your evening.
The cameras are both as expected, just as capable as the XS and XS Max and produce the same quality in terms of photo and video. Everything looks wonderful and you can capture some amazing shots and footage! Yes this is at the omission of the second rear telephoto lens but this for myself I found to be a non issue due to the fact I use both the front facing camera and wide angle lens more often and have a DSLR for my other photography needs.
I love the fact that you are still getting that powerhouse A12 Bionic. The phone is super snappy and performs like a champ! I find that it never gets hot and remains rather cool to the touch even after long periods of use.
The build quality of the iPhone XR feels premium and doesn’t at all feel cheap. The aluminium band with glass front and back is lovely to both look at and hold in the hand.
With the iPhone XR you still get all of the features that you’d want in a premium phone with a premium experiment yet without the extra cash outlay of an iPhone XS/XS Max. After having used the iPhone XS and XS Max thoroughly I can safely say that I by far enjoy using the XR a lot more.
The iPhone XR is definitely worth the purchase! Have a great day everyone and take care.
Thanks for the mini review, I'm glad you're enjoying your new iPhone.
Ok, I’m officially sold based on this post. I have been contemplating this past week whether to move from the 8 Plus to the XR. I figured if I could sell my 8 Plus to my son for enough to cover the outstanding balance due on it to AT&T, I’d pull the trigger on the XR.
