No thanks. Just a couple weeks ago he lied on air and spread misinformation about the current president, and then when corrected by his own staff pulled the classic “oh well I dunno about that.”

Differences of opinion are fine, but stop LYING.
I'm not convinced he is lying. I think he took too many mushrooms, and has lost the plot and become gullible.

There are, however, many in the media and government, who damn well lie their teeth off.

If you want to freedom of speech you have to give it to everyone whether you like what they are saying or not. You cannot choose what cannot be said because you do not like what is being said.

"Listening to both all sides" requires there be at least one other side which can only happen with free speech. Presenting a repulsive (to almost everyone) topic such as the pro-child-molesting is not a reason for restricting free speech. The reasoning is such topics are almost universally repulsive and anyone discussing the topic will be ignored. Some objectionable examples for free speech are just differing opinions, much like our political parties, and we do not want someone or something (government) deciding what is not acceptable. It is very slippery slope with no winners.

Consider the COVID vaccine. The president and his cabinet (plus a lot of other people/groups) wanted everyone to get the vaccine. Some government officials would have liked to mandate it and force those who object to get it. Imagine being silenced for questioning the vaccine or telling people not to get it? We have found out the government had a hotline to some of the social media companies and used it to tell/demand the companies remove certain posts by vaccine non-believers. We also have found the statistics being discussed were inaccurate and that it all but certainly did come from China. The latter idea was squashed by the media. That is not good.

Freedom of speech has absolutely nothing to do with Rogan and what platforms do or don’t choose to carry his show.

People actually have to want to listen to Jon Stewart for his show to keep going, and nobody did so it got cancelled.

Is that why Apple canceled the show? In fact Apple doesn’t release figures on viewership and neither Stewart nor Apple has said anything about low viewership being the problem. In fact the official stated cause was “creative differences,” which makes sense given that Apple tends to avoid controversy whenever possible.

So, maybe a level read of what’s actually going on here:

Spotify made a mistake. A very costly mistake. By guaranteeing Rogan a ton of money and exclusive streaming rights they priced themselves out of the podcasting network game. Their entire business swiftly became all about servicing Rogan’s contract while his ability to generate revenue for them sagged. The result was massive layoffs and a restructuring at Spotify. Ending Rogan’s exclusive deal while retaining the ADVERTISING revenue rights to the show provides them (they hope) with a positive revenue stream that will save the company and allow them to return to what they wanted to do before: run a network of many different podcasts.

So all this nonsense about freedom of speech and censorship and so forth is just complete bunk. This has NOTHING to do with that. This is all about a company that hitched their wagon to a star that turned out to be a liability. Money. Plain and simple.

Why would they care? Spotify is profiting from the cut of Rogans ad sales. Apple won't make anything on this.
It's the same reason Best Buy sold music CD's for so long.

Traffic.

Apple is betting on Rogan being in the podcast tree, so that will get people using Apple's platform. Click click click later, other podcasts get selected and Apple's ad revenue has increased.

You think Apple did this without a reason?

Not sure if it's been said, but Rogan is a funny guy with an interesting background. He has that "regular guy" appeal who realized he was curious about a lot of things and likes to talk about it. I like him when he interviews celebrities, comedians and athletes so I'm fine with him getting out from under Spotify. But when he starts talking with serious intellectuals, experts or self professed experts he seems out of his element. So I don't listen to those interviews.

I think an issue folks have is that now that he has become a cultural voice (and he clearly has), expectations for what he does have also changed. It's one thing to hang out in your basement and talk s**t with your buddies, which is how the podcast can feel. That was and is fun. Some things he says and believes are ridiculous and his biases are pretty evident but with a smaller audience those beliefs and biases can be dismissed as cringy and maybe even funny because he's such a good guy. But now he's gotten a huge platform and those things that you could once dismiss are now potentially a problem. This issue gets amplified when the guests he chooses are also questionable. He started out as an entertainer and he is now more than that- whether he wants to admit it or not.
A thoughtful and nuanced post on MR - there's hope for humanity yet! But I agree. I really enjoyed his John Carmack interview for example. They went into all sorts of interesting topics from VR and AGI to BJJ.

But to your point, the issue I have with Rogan is that he'll have on an expert one day and then what is effectively a crazy uncle the next, and act like they are equivalent. They are not. Some will then say do your own research, but many consider 3 hours listening to Rogan all the research they need.

You could literally apply your logic to ANYTHING. Nice try. Now do the press, presidents, governments , every business including Apple. ANYTHING!!!

I absolutely believe everyone has a responsibility for how their actions impact the world, but I also understand that much of the world is still too juvenile to look beyond their own wants and desires and the pain and suffering they cause in the world around them.

And that's ok too, everyone is living life to the best of their ability.

Wait, what did Apple do?

Joe challenges controversial ideologies that mainstream media won't, which makes some people uncomfortable. But I think it is healthy for our society to have some balance and debate in our discourse. I think this is a big reason it is the #1 podcast.
"challenge xontroversial ideologies" = spews hate left and right?

I don't think Apple did this at all. It was Spotifys/Rogans decision to put the podcast back on Apple/Youtube etc.

I can almost smell the obnoxious loud testosterone through my screen. Pass

Before you grossly generalize the content of JRE:

There are certainly some episodes that fit your description but you might want to rundown the list of guests before making generalizations.

Some that come to mind:

Cornell West
Dr Rhonda Patrick
Bernie Sanders
Graham Hancock
Josh Dubin (Innocence Project)

etc.

If you don't appreciate the interviews with fighters or comedians then simply don't listen to them but to spew gross generalizations like you did is problematic.

Right. Just seems a strange deal. If your Joe Rogan why not just do your own and keep the profit. Is it that hard?
250 million guaranteed? Unless you are pretty sure you can make way more than that then I don’t see why would you reject it

Right. And again, this is why the change is happening. Spotify signed Rogan to a very expensive and exclusive streaming deal. Then Rogan became… controversial. As a result his ability to generate revenue for Spotify sagged significantly. So much so that Spotify wasn’t able to produce any other shows. Their entire business became surviving Rogan’s contract. They had to lay off a huge chunk of staff and cancel a bunch of shows.

That’s what all of this is about. Spotify made a bad bet on Rogan and now they’re trying to fix it.

Please provide citation for this claim.

They just signed a new deal, if the previous deal was so detrimental to their business why did they renew?
