Not for me. If ipadOS 16 (big if) delivers, I might actually sell the MacBook pro and use my iPad for everything.

Then one day you'll need to format a hard drive or memory stick...

I bet 99% of people who claim an iPad meets literally all their needs forget that time they needed to go running for a computer in order to do something the iPad still can't do after 15 updates to its OS. Formatting a storage device is of course just one example.

TLDR = keep your computer , you'll regret not having one around for that one time you really need to do something the iPad just cannot do.

Full disclosure - I haven't read through the entire thread.

But I've been pondering this myself, and my personal guess is that it is being kept around for B2B primarily. I would guess that the base 13" MBP is the cornerstone product of Apple's B2B Mac sales and there is no reason to kill that golden goose.

Here's my take on this whole M2 MBP situation (I apologize if this has already been posted about)

The M2 MacBook Pro (and 13 inch MacBook Pros in general) is one of the weirdest and most worthless products that Apple sells. It still has the old design from 2016, while EVERY OTHER MACBOOK has had a redesign.

I think they are not paying any attention to the 13-inch MacBook Pro (the announcement lasted like 2 minutes). They will probably just discontinue it altogether in a few years.

You are paying at least $1300 for a 6-year-old design that still has the touch bar. Now, there is basically no gap whatsoever from the M2 MBA to the 13-inch MBP.

Here's my question/thought - What is the point of the 13-inch MacBook Pro anymore? All you get is 1 or 2 extra GPU cores and a fan. This didn't matter very much in the M1, so I don't think this will matter in the M2 either.

What do you think about this?

If you buy this M2 Pro, the whole case may be made in 2016.

They mentioned it's the second best selling Mac during the WWDC keynote. Not exactly a mystery why it's being kept in the lineup.

Yours doesn’t as there’s no physical escape key on Touch Bar Macs. You don’t have a magic computer that was specially made for you.
What's this then?

That's the problem with this board - everyone thinks they're an expert and can open up the snark. M1 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar have a physical Escape key. That's since 2020.

There is a sentiment I agree with. I hardly see the iPad as a full replacement for a computer. If anything it's a companion device.

But if they wanted to launch a lower-end version of the 14" with an M2 instead of an M1/M2 Pro, base 8GB of RAM, 2 ports instead of 4, etc, I'm sure that would become the second-best-selling Mac...

Put another way - I don't think it's that particular chassis, the 13" screen, that particular port configuration, or the touchbar that make the 13" M1 MBP the second best-selling Mac. It's the price and positioning in the lineup.

gotta be a hot seller and that design is incredibly cheap to make now. Reminds me of how they kept the non-retina 13" around for way too long.... it just sold a ton.

They won't as the new design likely has tighter margins if they cheap it down on other components. The 13" has good margins and is powerful enough.

Yes admittedly it needed more like the MagSafe and better iSight.

Everybody likes to oversimplify things to match their perspective. Reality is probably a bit of different things.

1 - It sells incredibly well as-is so why change much.
2 - Some people like the touchbar.
3 - Many prefer the form factor and/or don't care about having the latest look.
4 - Supply chain constraints mean tried-and-true can be much more effective/efficient.
5 - It helps draw a line between the Air and Pro lines to get fence walkers to upsell.

Many on here yell about wanting a practical design rather than the thinnest and lightest - this works well.

Many on here yell about not buying first gen designs (ala Air M2) - this works well.

Many on here yell about having maximum battery life with active cooling and whatnot - this works well.

Many consumers look at the touchbar as a differentiator that looks cool and/or futuristic so will upsell from the entry Air - this works well.
