Regarding the upgrade from 15 to 16 not being that much - the camera is a big change, especially from 15 to 16 base models.

But most people are going from an X, 11, 12 or 13 to a 16 and that is a much bigger update. I don't think I know anyone who updates every year. A few update every 2-3 years, but most are in the 4-7 year range. The only reason i upgraded my 13 Pro this year is that my daughter's X was on its last legs and she couldn't afford a new phone, so my wife told me to order a new phone and give our daughter my 13 Pro - my wife wasn't interested in replacing her 13 with the Pro, the 13 does everything she wants...

Regarding the 16 will be discontinued by the time the Apple Intelligence features arrive, don't forget the iPhone 14 is still a current model, so the 16 is going to be around for another 2-3 years.

isnt the current rumour they will have 16G in base model? so that sounds like that will suit you.
I have an 8GB 2020 M1 Air. It is fine for most tasks, but when I have everything open and then start Parallels for the 1 application I need in Windows it has started to struggle a little, since the Sequoia update, previously it would run Parallels as well, without much effort. On my home Mac mini, I have 16GB and that is enough for my use - some photo editing, otherwise office work and web browsing.

Once again, not a major upgrade just another ~25% fast (real world, not noticeable on daily usage) and more 8 more GB ($2 wholesale cost) of ram (we still can't upgrade our own ram or hard drive!? Seriously!??). Apple really has no competitors because of their Walled Garden. What is sad is how much cheaper Windows Laptops that offer more...

I've been a Apple user since 1980'es and the state of the company is a joke! We need a $500 VR headset, MBP with upgradable ram/hd, more innovation around the home (zwave, matter, etc) why don't we have an Apple Hub heck even Roku has one!?
If they made the RAM upgradable, M series devises would be no faster than the current ARM computers. More importantly, you would not be able to share RAM between the CPU, GPU and Tensor cores. This shared architecture is why I am getting computational performance that is in some ways comparable to Nvidia $25,000 GPUs that require special building infrastructure.

yeah 8G is usually enough. Parallels running both OSes is always a bit of a struggle.

there is an AI video app and it recommends 16G but will often work with 8G unless the models being applied are really resource intensive. i find it hard to upscale AND stabilise in one pass. and it chugs along very slowly with too much going on.

i'm guessing with more resource demands, Apple are going to have to finally admit defeat and add 16G as base.

How the heck did this happen? Youtube videos, Unreleased Mac products? Those “Sanctions” are just working miracles for the Russians. Poor things.

If they are moving away from annual updates - good. It’s not new though, it’s how it was back in the day. I hope it leads to longer lifecycles and less bugs. iOS and macOS are mature enough platforms yearly updates are unnecessary.

Unless the "Sanctions" were designed as a scheme to reformat the US of A project.

As always in order to figure out if something is working or not you'll have to make sure that you are holding it the right way.

I am considering upgrading my 4 year old M1 Mac Air to the M4 Pro 14 inch, but part of me still says the M1 Mac Air still works so why replace it. I could likely wait another 1-2 years.

With regards to iPhones I don't understand why companies release a new model every year. Every other year would be good enough. I typically upgrade my phone after 4-5 years because that is typically when they start to have issues.

they roll a new model out with nothing of note every three to six months or so.

which is exactly what mini 7 is. nobody will care that the gpu is 25% faster or the cpu is 30% faster.. it does nothing more than the 6. It got exactly what it deserved, no event. The macs should do the same. Apple isn't really wowing anyone now. They blew their marketing load on the Vision Pro, and its a flop. They need to just churn out yearly updates and keep their cringey cult videos inhouse. Customers will still buy..

you wrote your comment BEFORE today's mini was announced... :)

your idea of cringey cult videos is not reflected in poor sales or industry backlash ;)

You will never be able to upgrade the RAM or storage. The problem is the connectors that enable that dramatically increase the size and reduce the speed. Apple gains some performance and size advantage with their current design.

I think what the people asking for upgradability are really asking for is just cheaper RAM and storage.

OK, I guess working with large Logic Pro projects is Real World for me but you might better mean "Average User" might be more appropriate. Upgradeable is also not want the average user wants. Average user wants to buy and just use. Techies may want the RAM/Drive upgrades, but that is a small part of Apples Market
I agree. The majority of users will not ask if there is an M2 or M4 inside or if there is RAM. They just buy a computer and use it to watch videos and social media. For them a Chromebook would work.
