Macs are no longer computers to Apple. They're tablets that you control with a mouse instead.

I remember a world in the 80's and the 90's when people actually tried to advance their computing ability as the years went by, but these new GUI's Apple is using are literally as dumbed down as it can possibly get. It's as if Apple thinks their users are apes, and not humans.

Honestly... computing is devolving overall. It's sad.

do you really believe that? we can do so many things, really well, on our current macs. and, with every GUI change, people freak out... on this forum. meanwhile, the rest of the world just gets back to work.

i can run logic pro, FCPX, etc on my mac like never before. i think it's sad that people are devolving, but am glad (at least) that tech is evolving...

Ahem, how certain are you they're not intentionally off-center, so as to make the right one prominent? :)
I will repeat myself... even if that is why they did it, it still look bad and off-center.

I’m surprised that in this full redesign of macOS, meant to create familiarity between the Mac and iOS, that Apple didn’t use the same application icons as iOS. At least many of those icons do not feature this awful shadowing design. I seriously hope that these designs are tweaked in future beta releases but I’m not entirely optimistic.

It is almost as if Apple themselves tried to create a knock off version of their own OS based on those new icons.

Literally what I was thinking. That meme of "but just make it look different" popped into my head. They decided to use iPad icons and then they were like but we have to make it look different, and nobody questioned why. Then someone asked how, and the response was I don't know, maybe add shadows or something. Either use the iPad icons since the rest of it looks like the iPad anyway, or go back to Catalina icons. I think the contrast of the old icons with the new interface could be interesting. But anything they do to the iPad icons will just make them look worse as they basically perfected them in their current state. You either have to design new ones entirely or use old ones. Any alteration to the current ones will just make them look terrible.

I don't like all of the new items and many will definitely need some getting used to, but overall I REALLY like the return to a more playful design. Call me nostalgic (and I really only joined the Apple world in 2007), but many of the commenters here seem to not have been mac users all that long.

I for one still miss the bubble scroll bar and buttons...

the aqua button and scrollbar are so beautiful.

I hate that the icons are conformed to the shape of iOS icons. It’s like Apple wants you to feel like the OS is more restrictive than it used to be. It’s a visual/psychological cue. Ugh.
This is exactly the kind of feeling I got from the presentation. That Apple wants you to know you're being restricted.

I've taken a look at the beta installer, it's *literally* a mobile OS installer. That is, the names of some of the files have the world mobile in them. It's also no longer a pkg, it's one of Apple's new protected installers that use some obscure compression and file format so it's impossible to look inside.

In the future, (ARMac days) the Mac App Store will be flooded with millions upon millions of iOS apps that look like, well, iOS apps. Big Sur HAD to change its Mac icons to look a lot like iOS icons so the integration wouldn't be so jarring.

Granted, some of the beta Big Sur icons look pretty trashy, but the curved corners are here to stay.

I think a lot of people don't like change. I have an old 2011 Mac Mini that can dual boot into Snow Leopard and every time I take a peek at it, (SL) I'm always struck by how crappy looking future version of MacOS after it have become. Besides a few outliers, I think the change in icons for Big Sur is definitely a step in the right direction.
I have a 2011 mini as well. Not running Lion/SL because it's being used as a sever, but I do have an older mini that runs 10.4-10.7. Always nice to go back and look at the "good old days".

Now that I've tested out Big Sur a little more I don't really care for the rounded edges. It even rounds 3rd party app window corners. Kind of strange. I like the look of Catalina (and previous) better.

Well, all windows had rounded corners before Big Sur as well. Looks like the radius is just a bit more now.

When Apple moved from 3D to flat look, people were mad.

Now that Apple is moving back to 3D look, people are mad again.

you people don’t know what you want.
I wouldn't call those new icons 3D. Actually, most of them are flatter.

The Calendar icon for example. The old one has depth, while the new one is completely flat. The iWork suite also has icons that are now much flatter.

For the apps like Mail, Notes, Calendar, Contacts, and Preview, the tilt is intended to give the icons more depth. Pretty sure Apple talked about this in the Human Interface Guidelines. But in Big Sur that's completely gone, and the new ones look flatter.

The icons that do seem to have more depth in Big Sur are App Store, Safari, and maybe a few others. This is simply because there's a more pronounced drop shadow from the foreground.

The icons feel very beta.

Some adjustments are needed as it feels like there’s an inconsistent approach, as many have said.

Getting tired of the super bright saturated approach to the icons in the Apple eco-system though.

Perhaps next year we’ll see desaturated dark mode icons.

P.S. I haven’t got the dev beta so just looking at the screenshots and videos.

It does kinda look like a kid's game graphic. 😆

The battery icon is particularly awful and it looks like something stolen from the Samsung Android interface.
