The very first beta of the next major version of a near 30 year old OS signalling huge changes in the future comes out.

So do the keyboard warriors.

It’s beta 1. Not a GM.

Good point. But looking back, the beta versions of iOS7 were full of some gawdawful silliness (IMHO) that stayed put at release while everyone said “these are just drafts and likely to change.”

Meh. People hated the new iOS icons too and now they’re normal and fine. If anything, these add a little bit of skeuomorphism back in with the shadows. Everything is cyclical to a certain extent. Especially art, and by way of art comes design.

Yup. I went Flat and Round and Custom some time ago. Like it much better. Clean.

Though a problem with constraining developers to too much flat is too much similarity. To this day I mistake the orange & black Soundhound app with the black & orange OverCast app. Same with the iOS control center stopwatch and rotate-lock icons. Too clean, too plain, too similar...requires me the user to slow my roll and process before pressing. Gone is the feeling of “it just works” and “it’s like it’s thinking like I do.” And don‘t get me started on all the light blue & white flat app icons. Besides a functional degradation, they’re often downright boring. Instagram‘s tye dye washing machine icon replaced a beautiful, craftstmanlike and instantly-recognizable icon, washing away any chance of memorable heritage, and for what gain other than following the flat fad herd?

Have you seen how the app itself looks? ;) Its UI has probably not been touched since at least 2006.

Keychain Access has been updated and looks different. They moved stuff from the side to a row above and changed it to match the rest of the UI. So it has been touched by Tim

gmanist has returned. I remember your videos from years back.

Indeed, the icons should've just been copied from iOS for consistency and they look much better. This half-baked skeuomorphism but still flat is horrid.

Wow I thought everyone had forgotten at this point. I make mainly software tutorials on YouTube on a different channel now :)

Does Apple seriously not have pages and pages of design language to ensure a cohesive look across its UX?

This really looks like amateur hour at the design studio.

Im really hoping someone threw together some trash icons to differentiate between ARM or Universal 2 apps and current apps until a later build.

I don't feel any redundancy issues with my icons or confusion. But I made many of them and went through some choices in styles to get the right icon. They're not perfect, but I like the set overall.

You guys realize that these are beta's right? They will adapt to feedback.
I’m tired of hearing this phrase every year. We’ve all been testing betas for almost a decade now and not much changes between beta to full release

It’s BS!!! It’s Big Sur!!!

It's funny seeing people flip out over minor ****. Most of the upgrades look good or are improvements, 10% or so of them are questionable - who cares, this gets tweaked and refined over time.

iOS7 had some questionable stuff, but it was a huge improvement, and over the years iOS has become kinda perfect. I'm glad we didn't listen to the iOS6 die hards who wanted to pump the brakes and revert because it was 'cartoony'.

Finder was getting to look like old crap. Menu bars were starting to look like old crap. All this stuff looks generally better.

And when I return to Mac after being on iPad for a while , MacOS icons and UI does currently look dated. I'm glad they are making it more iOS/iPadOS-like.

And it's the same EVERY TIME apple change anything - "HORRENDOUS, AWFUL, AGHAST", relax bro.
That’s because you have no taste. Duh. Tasteless, careless. You have very very very very poor taste in design and aesthetics. Extremely.

They should’ve made macOS icons exactly like iOS.

The problem is the developers who will get influenced by this design and implement it with the new design language and won’t change it later on if Apple decides to refine it.

Oh you’re in good shape I agree. I was speaking in more general terms.

Yes and no, with the iOS 7 beta's quite a bit changed from the first beta to the GM. The ultra thin font was one I remember.

The icons were also very controversial however few now seem to be complaining about them!
