I agree with what many have said. I don't have the betas, I don't even have iOS 12. I'm on iOS 9, but, contrary to what Apple does with many settings (it moves them around, ALL the time, for no apparent reason other than to just... change), this is a regression.
Why couldn't they keep the tab? This makes no sense, at all. It seems it's another of Apple's "change for the sake of change".

Obviously, the intent is to promote the Arcade gaming thing, given the fact that Apple removed the Update tab in favor of Arcade. Since that won't be full-blown until iOS 13 is released and developers start releasing the Arcade games, it seems a bit pointless now. However, whether or not you agree with how Apple is doing this, it's NOT pointless, and not a "change for the sake of change" - there is a method to their madness ... Apple always has a motive... and like many here, I may not agree with this move, but then, I don't have the time, the funding or all the necessary skills to create my own phone operating system, so I choose to use Apple's. Even with these warts.

I think people are missing the point that Apple (probably) want people to rely more on auto update (which works fine if used as intentioned, i.e. on Wi-Fi, when charging and idle).

Works fine? I wish.
Have had updates sitting there since the 17th. Got a note from OneDrive to update so I went in and looked.
Auto Update is on. Have 11 pending. XS Max. IPP 12.9 G2 - Same issue.
The badge finally shows up after I go into the app. Yes, Notifications is turned on.
Frustrating. How long are these apps supposed to hang around before "Auto Updating"?
Auto Update would be nice. If it really worked. Not sure why some hang around while others don't.

Showing how long hanging around and recent new apps on the update list.

The new ”hidden” manually update is actually a very well feature—at least mentally.
Sounds reasonable, yet I still check iPhone battery percentage every now and then, and iPad battery percentage is always on.
Different people different stroke.

This has been the trend of the entire tech world for a very long time, otherwise companies cannot release new products to keep a few nerds feeling refreshed every year, if not every month or even every single second. A vicious cycle I’d say, and I don’t like it.
Back to this tab thing, I have plenty of games to play. I don’t care about arcade. I care about app updates, though a bit less often than before. I wish they can allow user to switch visible tabs just like music app in up till iOS 8.3. But I know, it will NEVER happen.

I hate the new process for updating apps, just another example of how much Apple’s intuitive design has fallen - really awful decision by whoever came up with this, simply defies all user interface logic and is completely and entirely awful.

When it comes to UI logic -I like this saying - Opinions are like ass***** everyone has one!

Here goes mine - Updates tab/UI page is more of a secondary UI. So, it could be hid behind some navigation flows. This leaves the main tabs uncluttered, and also makes space for new ones like the arcade etc

I really like the long press option on App store app to get to the updates UI directly withing the app store. I dont like the auto update option for the apps prefer to manually update every now and then.

I wish apple would provide EQ settings on long press of the music app but this is off topic

Well in this case it is to promote their new Apple Arcade, but do believe they could have found a better way to do this. Your icon with a badge icon does a pretty good job at helping with discoverability of where it moved to.

If it would work ....
