I've actually used the Bluetooth function quite a lot. I turn it off in the evening while I'm watching stuff on my ipad. When I get in my car the next day, it's back on and ready to go.

Wifi I've found less useful. I'm usually trying to disconnect from one wifi so it can connect to a better one. A list of possible connections would be far more useful for me.

my fiancee turns off her wifi at nite when she goes bed so no alerts etc of email/facebook.
and in morning turns it back on.

Why doesn't she use "Do Not Disturb" mode? That's why it's there.

Which is the exact rationale for the new functionality.

And if it did that, I’d be fine. But it will pick up the bad signal again and ignore the router right behind my chair. Thus, I’d like to have control over which WiFi it connects to.

I think it’s brilliant, actually. I’m sitting in my favorite cafe at the moment and the free WiFi is terrible. Flip up control center, hit the toggle to disconnect and carry on with my day. I don’t have to worry about remembering to enable it when I get home.

...

Does not work like that for me. I flipped up control centre to disconnect from a rubbish WiFi whilst out and about, when I got home later it did not join my home WiFi, several hours later it still had not joined it so I had to go to settings and select my WiFi and then it happily joined.

Very disappointed with this new behaviour.

Same thing happens to me. It does not rejoin networks no matter how long I drive or walk. I think this feature is broken.

At first I thought it was bizarre but I actually prefer it now for reasons others have stated. Nice to be able to ‘turn off’ Bluetooth without it disconnecting from my watch etc.

So I shouldn’t be seeing this when I turn off Bluetooth in control center? iOS 11.01.

I noticed switching on Flight mode no longer switches off Wi-Fi and presumably Bluetooth. Previously you had to reenable these.

With in-flight Wi-Fi becoming a thing, many people probably thought you had to disable flight mode to get Wi-Fi working again.

You do, if you have "Ask to Join Networks." turned on.

That’s not a trade off I’m willing to make. So again, I’d like the option to control which network I connect to.

I’m not sure why this is so hard. Leave the current functionality. But add the ability to manually select a network. That’s all I want. Or if you’re dropping a poor connection, look for better ones before jumping right back onto the poor connection. Either fix the functionality, or give us a better workaround. I’m not picky.

There’s no indication to me it should work as that other poster suggested. When you disable WiFi from control centre it says in settings that new connections are disabled.

To me it’s clear the feature is simply to allow WiFi to continue to be used for location and airdrop.

Using WiFi to get a rough location is far less battery intensive than using gps. That is why leaving WiFi on can often improve battery- many apps only need a rough location but will be forced to use gps if WiFi isn’t available.

The vast majority of people disable WiFi in order to disconnect from WiFi networks. This new feature achieves that but without interfering in other useful features of the WiFi radio.

We expect this to work as intended, which it isn't.

Disconnect from Wi-Fi networks

Open Control Center and tap . The icon will dim and your device will disconnect from any network that you're connected to.
While Wi-Fi is disabled, auto-join for any nearby Wi-Fi networks will also be disabled until:
You turn on Wi-Fi in Control Center.
You connect to a Wi-Fi network in Settings > Wi-Fi.
You walk or drive to a new location.
It's 5 AM local time.
You restart your device.

Apple has released the info. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208086

Personally having used iOS 11 since beta 1 I can honestly say that the new toggles are one of my favorite features of iOS 11.

Hey thanks for that link! I knew there was a change to BT/WiFi with iOS 11, but didn’t take the time to look into the details.

Now that I know how it works, I think it’s great! I especially like it for CarPlay.

I read the page linked to but I am not sure it is working as intended. It states:

While Wi-Fi is disabled, auto-join for any nearby Wi-Fi networks will also be disabled until:

  • You turn on Wi-Fi in Control Center.
  • You connect to a Wi-Fi network in Settings > Wi-Fi.
  • You walk or drive to a new location.
Well I drove 10 miles home and it did not connect to my home WiFi until hours later when I went to settings and selected my home WiFi.

Yea this "feature" needs some work. I still like the idea of 3d or long press for different options.

On iOS 11.0.1 when I enable Airplane Mode, both Bluetooth and WiFi get turned completely off (as in with the bar across).
As far as the new behavior of the BT and WIFI buttons in CC, I like it just fine. It's more convenient for my use case.

I'm one of the weirdos that doesn't turn off bluetooth or wifi ever, plus I keep every app suspended! How do I make it through a day!?!??!

if it disconnects from wifi how do u reconnect?

e.g.

my fiancee turns off her wifi at nite when she goes bed so no alerts etc of email/facebook.
and in morning turns it back on.

new system how do you reconnect, toggles it again and it reconnect to same network?
I'm asking for her as i moved back to android

Isn't there a setting called "Do Not Disturb" for this very reason?

Anyone else having the issue with auto connecting to networks.

Basically I've been with AT&T for years, even most recently on my 6plus and ios10 it would try to auto connect to the AT&T wifi in public places such as at Home Depot or Starbucks, however I could go in forget this network.

Now on my iphone 8 plus with 11.0.1 it again will try to connect to public AT&T wifi passpoint, but now when I go into the wifi setting for the AT&T connection I no longer have the option to forget this network. I have to completely turn off wifi to prevent it from connecting.
Very annoying to me from a privacy point of view.

Is there a "hidden" setting that I don't see to that would prevent it from auto joining AT&T public wifi hotspots ? Thanks.

Same thing with the Bluetooth speaker my wife and I share at home. When I get out of the shower and finish getting ready for work and she takes over the bathroom, I simply hit the toggle to disconnect from the speaker so she can connect. When I leave for work my phone automatically connects to my car because the radio isn’t off.

As an aside, I’m getting great battery life even with both radios constantly on so that shouldn’t really be a concern unless you have no Bluetooth devices and never use WiFi.

Well put. I’m in the camp of “return the toggles back to their original functions”, but it’s nice to see a use case where the current functionality works well.

So it sounds more like these toggles act the way they do because users are too mindless to remember to turn the radios off and on themselves. Sucks that those that DO watch out for the radios have to deal with it.
