I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed, but in the GM release, none of the dock customizing apps work anymore for changing the base color of it. Has anyone found a way to do this?

This new dock seems to slow down animations more than the previous one. Theres a noticeable drop in frame rate when switching desktops and activating Mission Control along with it's related animations compared to the older 3d Dock.

What Mac are you using? *All* OS animations are faster in ML on my 2011 MB Air. I think they improved the graphics drivers.

Get a custom dock image

I made an account just to post this... lol. Anyway, I was able to get a custom dock image working on my 10.8 Mountain Lion GM build.

So basically what you do, is download dockdesigner here:

http://www.moritzwette.com/dockdesigner/dockdesigner.zip?forcedownload

Open up dockdesigner and click the 3D tab, then click the "NO" button under transparent dock. After that you can copy and paste in your custom dock images; the ones that I highlighted.

Back to previous style?

I know I'm in the minority here. I thought I'd post in this topic rather than starting a new one discussing the same thing.

I'm personally not a huge fan of the new style dock. It looks like a step backwards for me. The icons are fantastic as are the reflections etc. However, indicator lights are harder to see and the glass dock from before looked way better to me (as did the separator) so I'm wondering if there's any way to make it look like it did in Lion. In fact, the gorgeous dock (and aqua theme back then) were a huge part of what turned me on the the whole style/image of OSX.

I seriously can't understand those who say it looks the same. It's not like it's only slightly different. It's so dramatically different that it barely feels like OSX anymore. I'm not talking the icons, i'm talking the actual dock itself..

I'm with you on this - I preferred how it was before.

Can someone please post the original, unchanged ML dock? With the square indicators? Thank you so much!

It can be replaced but the white edges from the DP4 dock will stick out. To do this i used the Dock contents from DP3 you can try this yourself with the files i have provided.

Dock Test File

I noticed that the Original Dock sticking out depends on your Dock size, Ive chosen a size where it doesnt show at all. Happy now when I can use my favorite Dock Raven again, thanks!

related: Candybar app goes free:

Panic explains on its blog:

Apple changed how the Dock is rendered, so it’s no longer possible to customize the Dock’s look. (You can still customize the indicator lights!) Also, CandyBar still can’t change the internal icons of Mac App Store apps, due to code signing.

CandyBar, although simply changing files on disk, has always fallen into a slightly-uncomfortable-for-us grey area of existence. It seems clear to us that there will undoubtedly come a time (soon?) when CandyBar can no longer customize system icons at all.

Custom Mountain lion Menu bar and dock

Hi Guys,

So i have finally got my New Macbook Pro themed the way i wanted it.

I have used the Obsidian Black menu bar to make the menu bar black, and then used iStat to create the white clock with custom calendar and battery icons visible. I also used Bartender to hide the extra icons.

I then used the method in post 75 on this thread to theme the dock and then was able to use other docks from deviantart.com. I used the DockDesigner software to change the dock until i found one i liked. as you can see it still has the white border which i personally dont mind.

Finally i used Candybar to theme the icons and photoshop to colour some of the icons to match :)

Also found a nice iTunes theme on deviantart

here are some pics...
