I removed 1,100mb of language files! Trying to stay lean.

How about printer drivers? I think there's around 3gb of those too. :p

Also, where are those language files? My 1TB hdd on the iMac is probably fine... but my 80gb Macbook Pro is wearing skinny jeans and needs to loosen up. :D

Yeah postage to Australia is crazy, to Canada is only $2.90 or so.
Its crazy I will always pay more for postage on monoprice than i will for the actual cable!
its weird right! imagine living near the cable place, that would be heaven!

Yep, thats the cable you need! TOSLINK on one end to go into the speakers, Mini-TOSLINK on the other end to fit in the 3.5mm audio out on the iMac

excellent! now to save for them haha! thanks so much for all your help!

I'm on my 4th 21.5" iMac.

The first 2 had dead pixels and the last 2 have had dust behind the screen.

I'm getting a final one tomorrow, if this fails I'm just gonna get a refund and possibly get the new Macbook.
That rots ,no dead pixels, no issues , I have heated it up good with games, tv, surfin, movies, games etc..other then warbirds 2009 installer not working correctly with snowkittycat. Its been great.

When I first got mine, I reinstalled snow leopard and everything has been running smoothly ..... this is a iMac 21.5 inch. I sold my mid 2007 20 inch to get this one.

I ordered my 21,5" 4670 6 days ago... today, I received a mail saying that it will be shipped in 1-3 days and delivered between the 3rd and 6th november.
I really hope so. Damn, I should've just gone to a local Apple Reseller...

*edit*

Shipped! :D

Yeah, you should've;)
My last three Macs were all bought via the Mac web store. This time I bought my iMac from my local reseller this Monday gone.
It went like this:
  1. Walked to store
  2. Walked into store
  3. Handed over my Dad's old, broken Dell laptop for which they gave me a £100 rebate
  4. Handed over my credit card
  5. Told them what machine I wanted
  6. They bought it out of the back store room
  7. I walked out with my 21.5/4670
No waiting, no note through the door when I get home saying "sorry, we tried to deliver your parcel but you were out, blah, blah"
Only effort was walking to the taxi rank so I could get it home. They're heavier boxes than they look:cool:

Or...

  1. Drove to the store
  2. Told them the machine you want
  3. Told them you worked for (Name of my company, not Apple ;) )
  4. Get over $400 discount (on machine plus Apple Care)
  5. They bring it out.
  6. Walked out and drive off with MY 21.5/4670 :D

and what is the name of the company so I can get the discount too. Or were you just bragging:D

My new 21.5 base model just arrived at my house- can't wait to get home and give it a try.

Has anyone had any problems so far? I have been looking at the various threads popping up about flash videos playing choppy on the new imacs- anyone here having any problems?

Should i reinstall SL once I get it out of the box??

Thanks.

Haha, bragging. :p They didn't check though or ask for any Company ID. You can try asking and if they ask for an ID just say you forgot it.

I don't want to say the name of the company here for reasons that you can probably guess... But I'll give you a hint. Used to be enemies and then became close friends with Apple. :D

yeah I've got to get to those printer drivers too, not sure how yet. I won a copy of CleanMyMac from TheMacFeed - CMM is adding printer driver cleanup but it did clean my language files (safely enough). The language files are located in the individual application directories, not in one central location- afaik, they are spread around in duplicate.

I've got 'my' :D 27" today and been playing around with it for a few hours. What a brilliant computer. Haven't had a single issue so far.
As a long time Windows user I am mighty mighty impressed.

No Blu-Ray?!? WTF!!!!

I cannot ***** believe this, Apple does not add or make an option of a Blu-Ray player!?!
Hello!?!
I was waiting for this latest iMac and to put my little hill of beans down on one hinged on the advent of a Blu-Ray player..I AM SO DISAPPOINTED!
Apple doesn't even have Blu-Ray OSX software for chrissakes.
Ok, so I must DL from iTunes their HD movies only. Pffft. That is such a Microsoft move.

Microsoft has blueray...

Also, you can install a blueray drive in the iMac (iFixit.com shows which one and where). Still waiting on OSX support to use it though. :p

Hi all, I'm new to the Mac family. :D Had my first iMac (base 27 inch) delivered on Monday and I've been getting used to it this past week and I now really quite like it and also I'm beginning to see why Mac users love OS X so much. There's some really helpful tips here for a newbie like me. Reading about the 'issues' I'm glad to say that I've had none so far - everything has been very smooth! No slow-downs or flickering screens (touch wood).

One thing which I'm confused about is the audio output of the Mac. I've hooked it up to my speakers (Logitech Z-5500) using an optical cable with a mini-Toslink adaptor on the iMac end. In the audio properties, where you can choose the channels and format, I would like to select 'Encoded Digital Audio' but unfortunately when I do I lose all sound and cannot play anything at all - it seems like the speakers just don't want to pick up a digital signal. Is there something I'm doing wrong? It works with '2 ch' selected but the sound seems somewhat lacking in 'oomph'. Any tips? Thanks.

Chili,

I am at work so I am replying just from memory.

I have the Z5500 hooked up to my Mac Pro and
since I am selling it, I will be hooking it up to my
27" iMac i7 once it arrives.

Doesn't the Z5500 have automatic encoding
in the speaker control panel?

In other words, can't you just output the
Mini to Toslink cable to the Z5500 control panel
(with volume knob) and it will digitally decode
whatever is inputted to it?

I would like to know the answer to this as
well as I will be facing your same situation shortly.

Chili,

well as I will be facing your same situation shortly.

i would also love to know the situation of this. i will be purchasing the z5500's soon after my quad core arrives :D. after talking to a number of users on this forum you cannot control the output volume from the mac end, you have to control it from the speaker end using the remote. there may possibly be a setting on the speakers that you have to 'activate' to tell them which sound encoding to listen for?

Again, I don't have the answer here but
I can tell you from the Mac Pro side all
the volume and decoding is done from the
Z5500 base station.

I never touched any of the volume settings
on the Mac.

The iMac (and my PowerBook) cannot encode/decode (I dunno which one ) the sound. You have two options. You can set the speakers to decode and ouput the sound at 5.1 surround, this is called PLII Music. But in my opinion this distorts the sound of the music.
I prefer to run them at the second option which is Stereo x2 so the sound is pure straight from your computer, and the sound plays in 2.1 stereo out of the front and rear side speakers. But you can do either ;)

EDIT:
I should add I'm talking specifically about the Z-5500's here.
Also this is only when playing music from iTunes for example. When playing DVDs encoded with dts (and through digital cable) the speakers will recognise this and play the stream directly in 5.1 sound without any decoding.

Ben,

Not certain I understand here.

Doesn't the Mac just output the
audio stream and the Z5500 then
decodes it?

If that's the case it should decode
anything you output to it.

I'm no expert and I think I'm using the wrong terminology.
But for example iTunes will output only stereo sound, so when you set the Z5500's to PLII Music the 5500's control centre is changing (encoding?) the sound so as to output it as 5.1 sound. In my opinion this detracts from the quality of the sound.
Whereas when you have a dvd in dvd player it outputs the sound in dts, its already 5.1 sound so the control centre doesn't change the sound just outputs the sound in dts.
Similarly when using iTunes and the Stereo x2 option. It just takes the 2.1 stereo sound and outputs the left stream out of the front and rear left speakers, and the right stream out of the front and rear right speakers, so again it is not changing the sound at all.

That explains it much better. It's exactly
how the z5500 works with my Mac Pro.

Ben, really appreciate the help.

Thanks Ben, I think that pretty much explains it for me. I was just confused because when changing to 'Encoded Digital Audio' in the Audio MIDI Settings stopped all sound (and iTunes refused to play anything) so I wasn't sure if this was something wrong with the machine or whether the Z-5500 just didn't like it? I'd agree that Stereox2 seems to sound best to me as well, I'm not a huge fan of the distortion effects that other listening modes tend to provide. Thanks for your help.

27" perfect with NO PROBLEMS

Am I the only new 27" buyer here that hasn't had any problems yet with my machine? No blotchiness, no heat issues, no mouse issues, no nothing. Just a great machine, especially compared to my 7 year old PC boat anchor!

Mine has been perfect as well. But maybe I am not looking hard enough! I'm just enjoying my baby!
