Just picked up my 27" iMac today:

What dimension of a box in sm?

Well, got my 27" today. Gorgeous machine. Seems easy to set up and make the switch from Windows XP. But the downer: turn it on, and the FIRST thing I hear is a loud ticking noise, coming from either the fan or the hard drive as it spins. It's constant, and loud, and isn't going away with reboots. So it's off to the Genius Bar tomorrow morning...already :( Not exactly the most positive first Mac experience, but I'm willing to give it a shot with an exchange. Still, seems like this first batch has a few quality control issues.

Oh man, that's too bad. Probably just something hitting the fan though. They should swap it out for you. :D Congrats on the switch! Was it the commercials ;)

watched LOTR3 at a friends lastnight, new 21.5" iMac. incredible speakers compared to the old ones! really really good!

THat reminds me of the first time I ever saw ANY of the LOTR movies. It was on my custom rig I built with a Dell widescreen monitor with some Sony headphones, lol. Definitely NOT the way Peter Jackson intended the films to be watched, but it worked and I LOVED them!

i saw them all in the movies first, and have only watched them all once since (apart from half of the other one that i watched the other night).

the soundtrack is really quite intense and it highlights the really high quality of the iMacs speakers!

i think that i will purchase some z5500's though for my new iMac. :D

I purchased Z5500's about 2 months ago when I moved to Canada (from Australia) and an optical audio cable but found out sadly that my below PowerBook was the last model Apple released WITHOUT digital audio out , so I am running the speakers off analogue with stereo x2 mode.
I purposefully have been holding off watching my LOTR extended dvds since I bought them so that I can do them justice, since I have no TV my PowerBook with 15" screen and stereo sound just doesn't cut it!
Can't wait till Nov till I can finally get those speakers going properly!
THX sound with 27" screen should be a step up! :D

why did you move from australia ?? :( come back!!

that would be a very nice setup, its what im hoping for too. it will be a nice upgrade from my X530s + MBP combination.

so the z5500's DONT come with the optical cable? bugger, guess i will have to buy one then.

Movin' On Up . . .

From a 17" 1.83GHz to the new 21.5" 3.06 GHz.

I went for the dedicated graphics card (Radeon HD 4670) and a 2 TB hard drive. Other than that, it's stock.

Ordered it October 20 (Tuesday). I called one of the local Apple stores but they didn't have it in stock (plus I wanted the 2 TB hard drive), so I ordered online. It was shipped (or at least entered into the FedEx computer) 10/23 (Friday) - see below. It sat around in China until Tuesday 10/27 (I believe an earlier poster called FedEx and they said they waited until they had enough orders to ship). On that same day (10/27) it arrived in Alaska (I thought everything went through San Fransisco, but apparently not).

It's scheduled to get here (Austin, Texas) Thursday (10/29). I won't be here so I'll need to be notified and then go pick it up.

QUESTIONS:
- Does anyone know how to tell FedEx to not attempt to ship it but to give me a call and I'll come pick it up? That may save a day or two.

- How is the wireless mouse, particularly in terms of lag if you haven't used it for a minute or two? I had a wireless mouse five or so years ago, but almost every time you moved it, it would skip the first couple of inches (presumably as it was waking up).

I'm studying in Canada. Its much colder than Perth!
Nope the z5500's don't come with that cable. As macs have mini-toslink connectors only anyway you would have to buy an adaptor.
I got this 4m optical audio cable which has the adaptor built in from monoprice.com for $5.80 including postage! They really are the cheapest site ever on any kind of cabling.

from the short hour i had on my friends, there was zero lag. even after it hadnt been used for 15minutes.

oh great! i didnt know what type of adaptor it needed. there is a local company (in bris) called CableChick.com.au they are normally really cheap. thanks for that.

Am I the only new 27" buyer here that hasn't had any problems yet with my machine? No blotchiness, no heat issues, no mouse issues, no nothing. Just a great machine, especially compared to my 7 year old PC boat anchor!

I haven't had any problems...just bliss. While I did have a concern about the screen feeling hot in the upper back, I was assured by contributors here that this is normal for a Mac machine. Not only has the machine been running perfectly, the service and support has been great. (Can you tell I am in the 'honeymoon stage').

This is my first Mac. I have been delighted in the 'real estate' with the 27" screen and being able to open multiple webpages (command n) then to view all at the same time (F3). The learning curve has been significantly less than I first thought, although there are so many things I am not aware of in the new OS.

I almost kept my 24" which I had purchased 5 days before the new models came out because I did feel there was a potential for problems with an untested machine. However, the Apple warranty protects us, albeit leaving the inconvenience of back and forth until resolved.

I feel confident this will be a great machine for years to come.

I've been using Z5500 for around 3-4 years, from PC, to macbook, macbook pro, 24 iMac and now 27" iMac, they work AMAZING off iMac's optical out!

I am having zero issues also :) Bare in mind, only the people that has issues will speak out, and they are probably only 2% of the whole new 27" iMac owner population.

I'm on my 4th 21.5" iMac.

The first 2 had dead pixels and the last 2 have had dust behind the screen.

I'm getting a final one tomorrow, if this fails I'm just gonna get a refund and possibly get the new Macbook.

I never quite get this... Maybe some stores are just worse at keeping their products in good shape... Mine is perfect and if it is only 2% of devices with these issues... the chance of having 4 in a row is crazy!!! Unless it's something to do with your location having more bad ones.

Same hapens with iphones

just checked that site, P&H to australia for that cable is $28.95!! thats rediculous! i am not paying 10x the price of the product for P&H.

i have found this one at my local store, (P&H is free eheh) will it work? thanks

Oh man, that's too bad. Probably just something hitting the fan though. They should swap it out for you. :D Congrats on the switch! Was it the commercials ;)

Swapped it out this morning, new one is working great, just getting everything transferred now. I made the switch because I should have a long time ago: I'm a recently graduated music major that is starting a basic home recording rig. Macs are built for people like me :) I'm still a little iffy about the new mouse (scrolling seems hit-or-miss depending on how much my finger sticks to the top of the mouse), but I'm picking up the OS pretty quickly. Can't wait to get fluent with all the software, everything seems pretty slick.

Good to hear. I've come to really like the scrolling on the new mouse... Except with google maps. It's hard to make little scrolls and then ever lift your finger up. I try to scroll to zoom in just a little and it registers as a "flick" and then zooms all the way! Haha. You can turn it off and make it like a regular mouse wheel though (no flicking if you turn off momentum scrolling" but I do like it except for with google maps. :)

Yeah postage to Australia is crazy, to Canada is only $2.90 or so.
Its crazy I will always pay more for postage on monoprice than i will for the actual cable!

Yep, thats the cable you need! TOSLINK on one end to go into the speakers, Mini-TOSLINK on the other end to fit in the 3.5mm audio out on the iMac

got my 21.5 base model today. It really flies and is pretty snappy. I was worried about it being slower than my pc on the net but it's 5times faster it seems. No hardware probs. MMouse is ok, the non-mechanical scroll is ace, the rest undecided. All in all TOP NOTCH. :D

Ace? You a Jake and Amir fan? :D

What's your PC specs that it out powers it? Also, is this your first Mac? I think the cleanliness of the UI makes it feel so much snappier. That was one of the biggest issues of... vista...

haha, I don't know where that "ace" came from! I'm don't know those guys, maybe I should?. I was on a E4400 C2D 2.0GHz 32bit Vista. Still will use it for recording TV.

This is my first mac in 5 years, last one was a whitebook, had 2, b4 that a powerbook (lombard). Nice to be back! (I'm still clueless when it comes to OSX... will learn)
