The folks in that thread didn't really find anything. Still a strange problem though. If you decide to do a fresh install of Snow Leopard, the easiest way to keep your files and stuff is to use Time Machine. Create a backup first on an external HD, then boot from the SL disk, format your disk, and do a restore from the Time Machine backup you created earlier. Here's an example of this process in full detail:Hey, my dad bought a 27" iMac yesterday, and one thing I noticed while setting it up for him is that any time it boots up it will sit at the gray screen for 10-20 seconds or more before the spinning gear and Apple logo appear. I see on page one of this thread that someone saw that and resolved it by reinstalling the OS. Has anyone else experienced this and solved it any other way than reinstalling the entire OS? If we do reinstall the OS does that erase all our data and settings?

bit sceptical with TM after reading that review now!! might have to turn to cloning!![]()
i mean backup clones every month or so of the whole drive. if something happens then i restore the cloned image then turn to TM to return individual files.Cloning won't do you much good if it's the installation itself, because it'll be exactly the same. The TM backup gives you the option to do a fresh install, and have TM put back all your files.
But since this is regarding a new 27", I'm sure there isn't too much stuff on it yet, or the source where it came from is still there, so you can always do a re-install and put your files on it the same way.
Would be great though if someone found out what the actual problem is, instead of taking drastic measures.
Oh yes, sure. It was in regards to a possible faulty installation, and then a clone won't be much help. But using both for general backup purposes is indeed the way to go. I have TM running only because it just takes clicking óne slider to ON, and I make periodic clones using SuperDuper!i mean backup clones every month or so of the whole drive. if something happens then i restore the cloned image then turn to TM to return individual files.
Yeah, it only copies whatever is in your Home folder I believe. It's always a good thing to keep track of stuff you change outside of your Home folder after a fresh install.did you read the last link in the link you gave? it listed a whole bunch of files/directories that are not included in the TM backup, such as certain apache folders and whatnot - rendering it useless. i use apache a fair bit so id want to keep it working 100%

To answer my own question, I went over there tonight and verified that it was still taking a long time until the startup Apple logo appears (actually longer than I had thought: maybe 20-30 seconds). I then followed an Apple article for resetting PRAM and this appears to have fixed the problem, even after multiple restarts. The article says to unplug the computer for at least 15 seconds, then plug it back in, turn it on, and reset PRAM. I know all about resetting PRAM but unplugging the computer for 15 seconds is new to me. At any rate, it boots up lightning fast now! Thanks for the reinstall info, everyone. I'll keep that in mind should I ever need to reinstall the OS.
I read the new imac has better speakers can someone compare them to older imac speakers please.
