Sits at gray screen too long at startup

Hey, my dad bought a 27" iMac yesterday, and one thing I noticed while setting it up for him is that any time it boots up it will sit at the gray screen for 10-20 seconds or more before the spinning gear and Apple logo appear. I see on page one of this thread that someone saw that and resolved it by reinstalling the OS. Has anyone else experienced this and solved it any other way than reinstalling the entire OS? If we do reinstall the OS does that erase all our data and settings?

Thanks!

The folks in that thread didn't really find anything. Still a strange problem though. If you decide to do a fresh install of Snow Leopard, the easiest way to keep your files and stuff is to use Time Machine. Create a backup first on an external HD, then boot from the SL disk, format your disk, and do a restore from the Time Machine backup you created earlier. Here's an example of this process in full detail:

bit sceptical with TM after reading that review now!! might have to turn to cloning!

iMac 27" Received Today

I received my 27" iMac today, and I am really impressed at how fast it is at everything I do. I write software in XCode all day and the display combined with my 24" LED ACD, it's really amazing how much I can have on the screen at once, many code windows open, debugger and console, without overlapping.

I played Nexuiz on "Ultimate" settings and it didn't stutter at all, smooth as silk! Going to try other games later in the week and see how things go with those, though I'm assuming it'll blow them out of the water...

I even like the new Magic Mouse, using it seems very natural and smooth. It doesn't stutter in the slightest even when the microwave is on, which I couldn't say for my Mighty Mouse. I am looking forward to seeing it tomorrow morning! lol... on my MacBook Air right now.

Cloning won't do you much good if it's the installation itself, because it'll be exactly the same. The TM backup gives you the option to do a fresh install, and have TM put back all your files.

But since this is regarding a new 27", I'm sure there isn't too much stuff on it yet, or the source where it came from is still there, so you can always do a re-install and put your files on it the same way.

Would be great though if someone found out what the actual problem is, instead of taking drastic measures.

So I had too....

Replacing my ancient 24" 3.06 iMac bought 05/2008 - I'll off that on Ebay when the new toy rolls in.

i mean backup clones every month or so of the whole drive. if something happens then i restore the cloned image then turn to TM to return individual files.

did you read the last link in the link you gave? it listed a whole bunch of files/directories that are not included in the TM backup, such as certain apache folders and whatnot - rendering it useless. i use apache a fair bit so id want to keep it working 100%

true, but restoring from TM will still render a few of the files useless (as they are gone ). surely its just a bad OS install or something...

george: VERY nice! i shall be getting the same machine. any chance you can inform us when the "real" shipping date is?

infinitie: please post more results from games!

Oh yes, sure. It was in regards to a possible faulty installation, and then a clone won't be much help. But using both for general backup purposes is indeed the way to go. I have TM running only because it just takes clicking óne slider to ON, and I make periodic clones using SuperDuper!

Yeah, it only copies whatever is in your Home folder I believe. It's always a good thing to keep track of stuff you change outside of your Home folder after a fresh install.

OH! DUH! how stupid of me  sorry.

might need to invest in another 1TB or 2 ;)

it copies most of the stuff off the computer, just not some of the less used stuff. which is funnily enough what i use all the time.

guys, some videos would be fantastic

videos of the imac running a HD movie or a game with high settings :)

Sorry for the delay, here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMbznsQ7ip0

It's 27" iMac running 1080p content @ native resolution, taken using Canon 5D Mark II @ 1080p, 30fps.

I actually took this couple days ago, but youtube keep failing on me when uploading (500MB file).

Cheers.

To answer my own question, I went over there tonight and verified that it was still taking a long time until the startup Apple logo appears (actually longer than I had thought: maybe 20-30 seconds). I then followed an Apple article for resetting PRAM and this appears to have fixed the problem, even after multiple restarts. The article says to unplug the computer for at least 15 seconds, then plug it back in, turn it on, and reset PRAM. I know all about resetting PRAM but unplugging the computer for 15 seconds is new to me. At any rate, it boots up lightning fast now! Thanks for the reinstall info, everyone. I'll keep that in mind should I ever need to reinstall the OS.

Glad it worked! Hope your dad enjoys it!

I don't know if this was answered elsewhere, but I just need a quick answer to this:

Can you use the iMac screen without booting into an OS? Or more generally, if your iMac is busted, what needs still needs to be working in order to still be able to use the screen?

I read on the iFixit teardown that the DisplayPort is plugged straight into the logic board, so does that mean the GPU and the CPU need to be powered on?

I read the new imac has better speakers can someone compare them to older imac speakers please.

bought one last friday:

Home Depot called. They're dropping off the bricks to wall up your window on Thursday.

We picked ours up yesterday. We ended up going for the 21.5" iMac, 3.06 GHz Processor but with the discrete graphics and 1TB HD.
It was a long, drawn out decision making process. I was waiting to see what the new MacBook was going to be like, and how much it was going to be. When it finally arrived I was disappointed - the price went up by £50, which surprised me, and the tech improvement wasn't quite enough to justify.
I fell into the trap that many people do and started looking at what I could get for £799 (UK price, obviously).
Concerns for my finances led me onto the Dell site and I saw they were offering a 15" Studio with Pentium Dual Core and 512MB Mobility Radeon graphics, etc., etc, for only £499. I actually ordered this machine. Then cancelled the order.
I went into my Apple Reseller (MCC in Chester) and saw that they were offering £100 'recycling' discount if you bought in an old laptop (working or not) on any Mac except for the MacBook or the base Mac mini. So, with the discount I could get the 13" MacBook Pro for the same money as the MacBook - interesting. Another £60 would secure me a HD upgrade to 320Gb.
Then I looked at the iMac and compared it to the MacBook: 3.06 Processor v. 2.26. 4Gb RAM v 2Gb, 500Gb HD v 250Gb, 21.5" screen v. 13.3" - all that 'betterness' for only £150 more. This reaffirmed my thoughts that the new MacBook is NOT good value, whilst the iMac most definitely is.
Okay, an iMac is not a laptop, but after speaking to the family, and bearing in mind the wireless nature of the keyboard and mouse, we (okay my wife) decided that she'd rather see a pretty iMac permanently on display than a laptop plus charger plus external HD, etc hanging around randomly.
Then I started to fret about the shared graphics in the base iMac - I mean, I want to be using this computer in 4-5 years. Plus the 1TB disk would be very handy.
So, got my Dad's old Dell (broken) laptop, got my £100 off, took home my iMac.
Very nice, very fast, very beautiful.
