now you have to ask if this is a wind up......... or is it just like telling a kiwi he's got a great aussie accent :D

edit
actually the kiwis i know are quite relaxed with being mistaken for being from aus in comparison with DHMs take on the accents above

I got my new iMac today. I switched from a 13" MacBook Pro to the 21.5" entry level iMac.

I decided to go for the iMac as I thought it would be a significant upgrade from my MacBook Pro. I mostly used my MBP at my desk so I decided I would be better off with something more desktop oriented.

The iMac is brilliant and very, very fast and the display is amazing. However, there are 3 very small niggling things that are bothering me:

When the computer is starting up (whether it be a cold start or a restart) a grey screen appears for about 30 seconds before the spinning circular thing appears with the Apple logo, and then it starts up very fast. The whole start up procedure takes about 1 minute, but I don't think my MacBook Pro hung at the grey screen for so long. Is this okay?

Secondly, when I put the computer to sleep and the computer powers down, there is a strange "woosh" noise, but I think this is coming from the Superdrive, although I am not certain.

Thirdly, I leaned over the back of the iMac to plug in my external HD and I noticed a tiny blue/white spark as the USB connector touched the connector on the iMac. I think I've heard of this before, and I'm assuming it's normal?

Anyway, I've been using the iMac for around 6 hours now and it's extremely fast, responsive and quiet. The new mouse is just brilliant, but it would be better if it was a tad more ergonomic!

Shaun.

so how big is it in comparison to..like say a macbook or something else may be good in providing a dimension standard? i really can't visualize the size..:(

Thanks for posting the pics! I ordered the base 21.5 today too. It's on backorder from dealer but I'll be checking tomorrow, won't be long! :D

Pls could someone tell me the distance between the buttom edge of the panel to the desk/ground/stand? Also i'm confused if apple gives the height of the panel or the full height on their technical details page.

Just picked up my 27" iMac today:

That's a 24" beside it, FYI.

The screen is noticeably brighter. The quality is up to par (if not better) compared to the 24". The extra screen estate is why I did the upgrade. I can't wait to experiment the video in feature. So far, I can't be happier with the purchase!

The magic mouse is also very fun to use. :)

Could you pls tell me the heights of the screen? (buttom edge to desk and the whole height as it's confusing on apple website).

THANK YOU SO MUCH

From desk to bottom edge: Approximately 2.6"
From desk to top edge: Approximately 20.25"

Hope it helps. :D

Helps a lot! Could you pls also tell me the distance between desk and beginnen of the panel itself? :)

Nice...

I was worried about 27" size, but your side by side picture is very good : you can see that the 27" is almost as high as the 24", but a bit larger...

Thanks for this review :)

have you noticed the hard drive noise, mine seems to making a rite racket, and when i boot lets say iphoto, its taking around 20-30 seconds to boot up and the hard drive seems to be really working hard and can really notice the sound..

so cool that you posted a picture with the 24" next to the 27"

my fear was that it would be too big, but finally it's just a wider 24"

i think that i would go for it

because 21.5 will be probably too small

actually, 24" was a good size

but since the 27" is the same height, i'll pick the 27" over the 21.5

thanks for sharing ;)

great thread :D

i shall be purchasing the 27" core i7 machine when it becomes available. i cannot wait!

great to hear that the mouse is good, i have high expectations!

can anybody try gaming with their rig? the top end GPU are OK but at that resolution i fear that it might struggle (might have to go back to a HD res LOL)

cy88: can i ask why you bought a new imac and not just a big external screen?

<- Waiting for the Core i7, 27-inch iMac myself.

@ cy88 Thanks for posting those pictures, amazing! I fell in love with the 27-inch iMac as soon as I saw it on the Apple store. Also, great to see that the 27-inch iMac isn't taller than the 24-inch model.

There's only two things stopping me getting my dream iMac...

1 - The Core i7 SKU isn't out until November,
2 - I need + $1000 to actually be able to buy it - I don't use credit. ;)

I'm sorry if this is a completely dumb question, but I'm new to the apple world, and I'm just wondering what are on the sides of your computer? are those speakers? if so, i love them.

OP

Did you get your problems sorted after the reinstall?

Thinking about doing a clean install as well. Got the same issue with start up - takes longer than my lower specked macbook pro lol.

I purchased a 27" yesterday and after doing a migration, I spent some time with it.

It's fast.

The screen is great but I think it's still too small to take full advantage of Blue Ray. My 46" Bravia is about the smallest screen I'd really require Blue Ray for, it might be nice if it is your only screen option but not a deal breaker.

The mouse is at the opposite end of the mouse spectrum from the mighty mouse which really stinks. This mouse works great and looks great.

I have found only one thing to grouse about with regard to the imac, it doesn't include a remote. Without the remote you are faced with a choice 1.) to shut it off completely or 2.) put it to sleep but leave the mouse on (otherwise the imac comes out of sleep mode when you shut off the mouse). You really need a remote to put it to sleep.
