I ordered yesterday morning and the Apple rep estimated I would get it by Oct. 28th and Nov. 3. That seems a long time if you guys are walking out of the store with new ones. Sometimes they overestimate to keep up the good feelings - I hope so. I ordered the 21.5 due to not having enough headroom below a permanent bookcase in my office. Think I'll be happy with that as I'm now on a 19" Dell. So as not to become outdated too soon I ordered the 3.33 and optional 8 of Ram. I'm also moving over from MS OS to a Mac - can't wait till I get the e-mail that it has shipped. Thanks for the user info and pics!

Congrats! Did you get the one with the 9600M or the ATI card?

I got the ATI.

Check out the iFixit breakdown. The Core 2 Duo 27's also have a desktop CPU: 3.06 GHz E7600 Core 2 Duo LGA 775 socket T CPU.
Do we assume this to also be true of the 21.5's?

I hope we get some Geekbench and barefeats figures on the new crop soon, the XBench results are, as usual, all over the map.

I thought I read that it was a laptop cpu... but I could be entirely wrong. :p In fact I probably am. I don't really want to pull mine apart to check :D

I really don't want too.... but I'm debating installing Windows 7 (I one extra license) on it to see how it preforms with games. :D My other desktop is slightly underpowered and this thing is very nice. :)

i thought all imacs had laptop CPU's but i looked them up on intel's website and the only 3.06GHz with 3MB L2 Cache are desktop CPU models.

the 2.93GHZ with 6MB cache is a laptop model

here is the website

desktop CPU's usually carry lower prices so it explains how Apple is giving you more for the same price and the same margins

How is the glossiness compared to previous generations? Worse? Will the increased brightness mean even more eye strain or not?

The brighter the backlights, the less the reflections are apparent. Then again, the brightness itself can induce strain, dependent on the environments brightness.
It probably doesn't matter as the new iMacs still offer the option to turn down (dim) the backlights, as far as I'm aware.

my 27" did give me eye strain on the first night, but since then ive been fine, my eyes typically need to get used to new displays anyway, the same applied on my old 24".

My 27" imac came with the display resolution set at 2560X1440 but the menu bar, dock and web sites were tiny so I set the display resolution at 1920X1080 and everything looks normal.

Has anyone else messed with the display settings?

well my 27 got here a few hours ago...its nice lol i purchased the base 27 and put my extra 4gigs of ram in (8 total) crazy how simple they made it... i am totally amazed about the 20 sec boot-up time... everything runs sooo smooth

did you worry about finding the same brand of RAM or anything like that? what is the "stock" RAM brand that it comes with? what did you put into it?

thanks in advance ;) im also thinking of going this way, not sure though. the only RAM available at my closest store is 1333MHz RAM ($50 for 2GB).

Got my 27" iMac today, first thing I tried (and only reason I ordered a new iMac) was to be able to use it as a display for my PC for gaming once in a while :)

PC has a ATI 5770 with DisplayPort out, so I also got a MiniDisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable, plugged it in the ATI and the fun began:

First thing I noticed was, that the clearing of the DisplayPort in the iMac isn't right. When you look straigt on the backside you notice, that the connector is placed to far down to fit the gap in the backside - meaning I couldnt get my cable connected...
Great first impression, but hey, it's tool time so I took a screwdriver and gently pushed the connector upwards and with a little force the cable finally got connected :D

No it's getting reaaallly interesing: How the hell can I tell the iMac to show me the input signal it's supposed to get through the DisplayPort???
Anyone any clue about this yet?

Unfortunately it's 2 o'clock am here in Germany and Apple Support Hotline isn't staffed at this time...

iMac Server

Hi guys,

This is my first post, and I just want to thank everyone here for the treasure-trove of information on Apple products. I just ordered my very first Apple computer, the 27" iMac, 2 TB, 8GB, Quad i7. I'm so pumped about it.

Anyway, I plan to also get a Time Capsule to back up my data. I have a question though... if I store all of my movies/music on the 2TB internal drive, could I access that online from another location? Even through Mobile Me? Or must I use a specific NAS drive?

Any advice would be much appreciated... cheers.

Bonnie lass probably parallels or VM Ware would work fine for that ... your pc environment would be isolated in a PC image if it became infected or corrupt and restore to where you were from last backup of the disk image ... easy :p

Allen, I've heard from a few people that VM Ware is better than Parallels. Do you agree?

I also have a question about my old IMAC which is 39 months old. A few months ago it started slowing down and freezing and I'd have to reboot. Then last month when I rebooted it wouldn't turn on and I'd have to try repeatedly until it would start. At the Genius Bar it wouldn't turn on at all so they told me it was probably the hard drive and that it was so expensive for them to replace the hard drive it really wasn't worth it. That is why I waited for my new 27" IMAC. Well anyway once the old IMAC catches and boots up it works fine for quite awhile. My question is should I take it in to Tekserve in NYC for an estimate? Does that sound like the hard drive? I used the Tech Tool CD that came with the extended warranty on it and it says the Volume Structure failed and suggests that I reformat it. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

And I love my new IMAC 27" more every minute. It really is awesome!

New Mac

I got Apple Care with mine - seems almost everyone thinks it is worth it including my local independent Mac tech.

Apple Care

I bought Apple Care with mine as well. In the past I purchased Apple Care for my IMAC and not for my MacBook. Apple Care was quite beneficial on the IMAC as I had a few minor problems and would have had to pay for service. Thankfully the hard drive in the MacBook went bad a few days before the first year was up. But I would recommend Apple Care to everyone.

Some place in this thread I read where a person was waiting to buy Apple Care on Ebay for less. I had wondered about that but was afraid it was a scam. Has anybody else here purchased it on Ebay and was able to use it successfully?

welcome to MacRumors!!!

it is possible to access your music etc via mobile me. i guess there are a number of differeny ways
1. share your computer to the world (authentication needed, of course). you can connect to your computer from anywhere you have internet.
2. share each application (im guessing itunes). im not entirely sure how this is done.

can you specify a bit more what you want?

Thanks... honestly, this site has been a fantastic resource.

Basically I'm planning to turn the iMac into a media centre... it will contain hundreds of movies, tens of thousands of songs, etc. This is obviously too much to put on a laptop hard drive at current sizes, but I'd like to be able to access a movie or two, or copy a certain album to my laptop, over the Internet while I'm away from the house.

I know these items can be stored on a Time Capsule or other NAS drive, but I'm hoping to do it direct from my iMac's internal hard drive. Possible?

Thanks again for your help!

yea this site is great! i have learnt so much from here.

it is most certainly possible, i have a setup similar to what you want.

im glad that you wish to copy the music/movie to your computer first, then play it - streaming would be a lot harder.

do you have a static or dynamic external IP address? this is an important question, as a static address adds a few extra points. also, do you have a ABES/Time Capsule?

here is a basic rundown on the steps:
1. open up the specific ports on your router (these will be the AFP ports). you must enable these few ports to be open so that the connections can be made to the computer.
2. enable file sharing on your mac - you can use encryption and whatnot, and only share certain folders. its pretty secure.
3. find out the external IP address of your computer network, when you are out and about you can "Connect to server" :)apple: + k when in the finder) and use the external IP address of your computer network to connect to it.

that is basically it, of course its not always that easy but that is the run down. when i want to file share externally, i must set the IP of my computer sharing the data to the IP of the router (this is called DMZ mode).

any questions or whatnot just PM/email/msn me. im always on haha

Welcome and OMG that computer is awesome! Haha. I was close to doing that as well (and then crying because I wouldn't be able to afford food ;))

As for accessing music and such online. The easiest way to handle music is with Simplify Media. Check it out online, it's drop dead simple.

As far as movies, you're probably going to have to find a different method because Simplify Media doesn't do movies. You can enable web hosting on your Mac via preferences and then put the movies into the web folder or set up the web server to share the movies folder that you have. You then could put together a page with links to each video (ugly and simple) by making an html document like this:
Code:
<html>
<a href="movie.m4v">Movie One</a><br>
<a href="movie2.avi">Movie Two</a><br>
</html>

And saving it as index.html and putting it in the same directory as your movies. Then you'll just have a basic web page with links on it to all your movies for viewing from anywhere.

With Simplify Media, there is no need for this, but if you're going the web host or even FTP route you'll want to be able to find your computer online rather than memorizing your IP address every time it changes. Go to DynDNS.com and sign up for free there. Get a free DNS and download the Mac program to have it update.

Simple as that! ;)

The web hosting thing is an interesting idea. Basically I'm open to anything that would work... heard about Simplify Media, and will definitely check that out.

Besides the 2 TB HD in the iMac, I plan to pick up a 2TB Time Capsule for Time Machine backups and I already have a 1 TB LaCie drive. I was reading that it might also be easier just to use the TC as a media server... again, that seems fine but then was having a 2TB internal drive a waste? Also I hear performance is much better when the files are stored internally... which leads me to wondering if it's possible to mirror music/movies/photos from the internal drive to a TC and/or LaCie USB drive. That way they would play well on the iMac (on the internal HD), yet be accessible on a laptop from somewhere else (via the TC).

The whole point is to have a movie/music collection at home, with access to it while I'm travelling with an MBA (which I hope to pick up next year, after a revision).

Thanks again to everybody on here... and believe me, I won't be able to eat food for a while after this purchase either!! I live in Hong Kong, and been having $1 bowls of noodles for the past 3 days! :)
