I tried out the new features, but I most likely won't be using the "gentle, loud, slam" etc effects. Forget stickers also, just regular texts will do. The handwriting feature is pretty cool.

What I can't understand is the Apple Pencil does not work with iMessage Handwriting on my iPad Pro. I thought the pencil battery was dead, but no. Beats me.

Works OK for me on my 9.7?

The new messages app is still growing on me. At first, I did not like it. I guess with time, I might enjoy using the new messenger features. What I do like, is I can instantly share recently viewed restaurants through the Yelp keyboard extension. Pretty cool. I'm sure it'll get better as more apps become available for it.

You can send cat pics in email. There's an attach button and everything. Should we ban email in a corporate context?

You are referring to the feature of adding an attachment, something fundamental and necessary to the email experience.

That is not analogous to text messages which are simply informative, and from a business standpoint, are succinct and direct.

The problem with iMessage is that the 'cat button' is overwhelming and is a disconnect from the fundamentals of text messaging. For those of us who don't want the constant reminders and accidental button presses leading us to rude GIF's and immature confetti displays we should have the option to get rid of it.

MMS had existed for a long time too and that's simply an extension of text messaging. You could send sound, pictures, video there also. Just like mail, just like iMessage now, it was, is, and will remain optional. There is no "cat button", no-one will force you to send memes and people have the same ability, and motivations, to send or not send you, content you think is inappropriate.

I'm not particularly impressed with iOS 10 at all... Seems like the least impressive version... Has some cool stuff but none of the key features that anyone wants... No customizable control center, no dark mode, no hiding apps, no peer-to-peer Apple Pay... Pretty much any cool rumor that existed is not true
It's targeting juveniles and kids that are easily impressed with stickers and scribbling in messages. All designed to capture young users for life.

Anyone else NOT a fan of all the crap they're shoving into iMessage? It looks freaking terrible and possibly really annoying depending on who your contacts are.

Was really hoping for iMessage on iCloud (like WhatsApp Web) and Apple Pay within Messages, but not this..

iMessage jumped the shark. Once I started getting stickers and animations sent to me I disabled it. I wish I could just disable the flair and leave the good stuff like hq video/pics.

The implication here is that it wasn't possible for people to send you images and animation before. It was.

Obviously you have not been sent animated messages or had stickers placed over your message bubbles yet. I'm not talking about sending gifs with the built in search.

Assume much? I've had exactly that from a 28 year old and a 37 year old on upgrade day. I doubt either will persist with it, except perhaps for the odd happy birthday or something. I doubt I'll use it for anything more either. Not using it while it continues to exist won't affect me in any way. I see no need to fake outrage about it.

The only one out of touch is you. I'm 30 years old and I and all my friends have used these features to death already. This is 2016, time to catch up or stop complaining
LOL 30. Yeah you're really up there :)

Some of this are just too busy for this silly nonsense. We don't have to participate in the latest social trends of the youth to stay current. It would have been nice if it was optional.

Do I seem outraged? That's the way you're perceiving it. I'm just saying it got bloated. We don't have to agree. There are plenty of threads expressing love for the new features.

No-one is forcing you to. Tim Cook isn't going to come round to your house and force you to send captioned gifs. As for receiving no-one can send you content they couldn't already

Both the apps and the text/screen effects are hidden behind one button each. The latter button already existed but had another function on long press. Apparently "bloat" = "a button" now

This thread is asking who else does not like the new iMessage. I stopped by to express agreement with the thread author not to debate with those that love it. Appreciate you let people know you disagree but I'm entitled to my opinion as well.

I don't recall saying I loved it. Perhaps you can point out where you get that impression. I'd say I was pretty ambivalent about it in fact. The stickers/screen effects don't affect me at all and the app plug-ins - at least the early ones - seem a bit limited. I merely pointed out the "I'M AN IMPORTANT EXECUTIVE" and "OMG CRAPPLE JUMPED THE SHARK GAIZ" posts are pretty ridiculous reactions to slightly different forms of being able to send content everyone has been able to send for, what, 15 years?

So am I not able to highlight a certain word and copy it, in a text message now?

I would normally hold down on the word I wanted to copy and it would highlight and give me the options of select all etc.
Now when I hold down on text that bubble pops up to send a "haha" or "like it" and all that nonsense.

Can I turn that off. Or am I missing how to do it correctly??

I don't think you could ever highlight a word in messages. It was always copy the whole post or nothing and you can still do that.

I would have agreed with that before my friends and family updated their software. I'm a 47 year old business woman and my female friends and colleagues are having a lot of fun with it. I also spent about an hour that first night texting silly stickers and effects back and forth with my 70+ year old mom, who loves it and continues to download new sticker packs.

Seriously, if you don't want to use it don't click the little A button. I don't understand why that's such an issue and why some of you judge other people so harshly (but I'm used to that happening here).

Maybe I am an old fart, but I've tried the message features and even drew a few dirty pictures, entertained me for about 10 minutes or so, novelty over.

When phones started getting cameras, I took a few blurry shots and then the novelty wore off and I assumed I'd never use the camera on my phone again.

Now I use it daily.

The features have to be there for people to use them and get used to them.

I feel the same way. That said, at least it isn't worse (i.e. slower) than the old iMessage.

I take that back, a little - it is worse with all the new notifications. Hopefully we can modulate that soon.

Same. Although my mother and I have you and your mother by a decade. Add in my 29 year old daughter, and we've been having a blast trying out all the new features. I figure another week, and we'll be back to just texting.

First off, I am not judging people, I am judging Apple.

Next, it's fine that you are a business woman and enjoy the confetti and the kissy lips.

The issue is that Apple is forcing everyone to navigate around these immature and frivolous features and have compromised the look/feel/UI of the app we use most often on the iPhone. This is a big deal. Apple should not have done this.

They should have treated these features as an app, called it "iMessage Immaturity". They should have executed this like they do keyboards. If you want a funky keyboard you hit a button and the standard one is gone and replaced by something that looks and feels different and acts differently. You want a different typing experience, you can have it. You want a different iMessage experience, sorry, you're stuck with what we gave you, enjoy the wasted real estate, the small compose field, and all the buttons linking you to rude GIF's and childish backgrounds.

Don't click the A button. Period. It's hardly "wasted real estate " considering before the A was there, it was empty space.

In my opinion, calling a feature immature is the same as insinuating that a person enjoying it is also immature and I find it VERY judgmental (for the record, I've noticed that judgmental people rarely recognize that trait in themselves).

Never mind, it works now. I don't know..looked like the Pencil became 'unpaired.' I had trouble with IOS 10 showing the Battery widget also. Few bugs on my end with 10 and the iPad.

Yeah it does that unpairing thing from time to time. Bit of a pain.
