Bickering over what the new mini should and shouldn't be. Competing for the best idea of what the future will look like.

QFT and only Apple knows what the next MM will look like. At least there's now solid rumors and a glimmer of hope the MM is not dead, at least not yet. We shall find out this month with the launch of the new iPad's. :)

To funny. This thread, ostensibly about the next mini, was massively entertaining when there was no hope of a new mini. Jokes pranks, gags, light drama all making fun of the lack of progress. Supporting each other through the shared dark period with little hope for the future. But the second we get real news, real hope, it devolves into serious. Bickering over what the new mini should and shouldn't be. Competing for the best idea of what the future will look like.

One way of looking at it is that we need all the flame wars we can get to boost the post count to 5000 before the Mini is updated. We are in a hurry to get there, since the Mini is almost certainly coming in October.

Heh, when the news/rumours surfaced I immediately went into something of a decline thinking about the possibility of a lockdown on user upgrades. I was genuinely happier at the prospect of the mini being discontinued: I'd rather have the final mini (not that I do, I'm 2011) than know there's a newer but sadly diminished mini out on the market.

My question to the forum is this: If the Mac Mini isn't updated at the late October event what is everyone's plan?

I'm either going to run my 2011 Mac Mini into the ground after installing a 840 SSD or build a Hackintosh if I can get a small enough form factor with Iris Pro.

My plan is to replace my 2011 macbook pro (almost always in clamshell mode) with a great new Mac mini (I hope), but I'm not in a hurry so if it doesn't happen in October that's fine with me. But I hope there is good news in October for the many people who are eager to move to the next version.

Are there any advantages of soldered internals for the end-user?

soldered internals are good for mobile gear. they are a bit more rugged less subject to shock damage.

Mac mini's imac's and or mac pro's do not need soldered gear inside of them.

The only objective advantages for the user are:

Electrically more stable, lower power dissipated on the connectors, matched memory to the cpu requirements, stronger build.

Of course builder really don care about this, they do that because its far cheaper to build and assembly and only very low % of users actually are concerned on upgrade Ram along the device's lifespan.

Being honest, people (as me too) use to order Macs with low memory, then asap they got his hands on it upgrade memory to their needs because its cheaper, but doing that has its risks, you may use not the rigth specified RAM thus leading to unstable system or later logic board failure, thats its one onf the manufacturer reasosn to not allow user upgrades, since more ends on sub-par perfomance or issues with later damage under warranty.

Note: BASE iMac comes with soldered Ram.

Part of me wonders if the new Mac Mini won't be modifiable, and/or will be seriously underpowered.

Then, when sales aren't very good, Apple will claim that the demand for a non-iMac Apple computer isn't there.

I will most likely buy a Mac Mini regardless if the internals are soldered. I am not one of those folks who tinkers with computers.

All that said, I understand why folks want more life and bang for their buck for their Macs. If I knew how to change the ram and ssd I would too (I am somewhat mechanically inclined but my grip is not always as delicate as it looks - I nearly broke my iMac ram bays "gently" trying to install ram in the 2010 21.5".)

I do hope whatever Mini I get gives me at least four years of servitude.

Well, glad to hear the Mac Mini is really almost certainly coming. My secret evil plan is to buy a NAS and then a new PC or Mini. Phase 1 is now complete. I just bought a Qnap TS-251 NAS and 2 WDC Red Pro 3Tb HDDs (Raid 1). Got it up and running this past Sunday. Phase 2 is to buy a Mac Mini, unless it is a deep disappointment. I'm not a fan of AIO computers but the rumored 4k/5k iMac has piqued my curiosity. I may go that route due to the higher resolution. Will have to wait and see. Now having a NAS for mass storage I'm free to choose a computer with smaller HDD/SSD capacity, such as rMBP.

In crimson, this would be the Mac mini Babybel...

...the above is pretty, but please let it stay square and stackable. Actually, please let the case stay exactly as it is, unless Apple want to provide a double height version with a PCI slot and a bit more breathing space.

There seems to be disappointment at the square face of the Apple Watch. It would very Apple to produce a square watch and a pointlessly puck-shaped mini.

Did you have to use the word 'puck'?

I have only just gotten over the last time Apple puck-shaped us.

The horror, the horror…

:(

Maybe they have a giant warehouse full of those infamous puck-shaped mice, and now they are on a quest to reuse them as Mac Mini housings?

Looks like it should have 'fido' written on the side. :) I do like the idea of a simple device with multiple colours however.

The push for 5000 is a must. we can do it!

My other goal is to start the new what will be the 2015 mini specs thread the same day the 2014 mini comes out.

We must have that new thread and start asking for a 2015 mini with a better gpu as soon as possible. Since we all know the 2014 's gpu will not be good enough for most of us.

It may be a little difficult to reach 5000 if the rumor of October launch is true.

Spec thread bashing may be fun.

Let me start now and agree we need a better GPU than the 2014 nMac Mini. :)

If they could squeeze a decent (headless) computer into the same volume as the puck mouse, that certainly would be something to see.
