iPads and iMacs and Yosemite to be featured. Mini to be shut out again?

When we had Mini's last refresh in 2012, was it under-the-radar or was there a clear Mini press release/event to introduce the upgrade?

The Mini was discussed with little fanfare, with Phil Schiller joking that "you knew there would be talk of something Mini today, right?", because of all the talk and rumors of a Mini iPad, which was introduced later in the presentation.

Wouldn't it be great if they blandly specced out the new iPad Mini, joking about how we were all expecting an update to something named Mini, then launch into a dramatic introduction to the new, redesigned, bread-slicing, time-warping Mac Mini we are all inevitably expecting?

Would be nice.

I'm hoping that Apple has been waiting to make an announcement for new hardware marking Mini's 10th anniversary for January 22nd, 2015.

That's right, Apple has failed to make even an easy update to the mini in two years but they're waiting until after the important Christmas shopping season for an anniversary that few customer know or care about to update the mini.

This thread has been one sad important upcoming date to wait for after another one sad important upcoming date to wait for. The really smart posters long ago realized that this thread now exists for the purpose of adding posts to this very thread. Some of them barely mention the mini, just more future posts as some kind of goal!

Well, they released the original Mini that few customers cared about after the important Xmas shopping season of 2005. So there IS precedent. :)

So while we wait for the mini which is almost certainly coming, what would you add to the mini functionally that would be a huge step up from what they have now. I'm not talking about iris pro or broadwell or TB2 ports, I'm talking about form/function items. This can include pipe dreams that might never happen. Here's an example:

I hope the new mini comes out with an integrated projector where you could use your iOS device as a trackpad/keyboard for mini-on-the-go or presentations.

Durable rubber wheels, a carrying handle or shoulder strap, a blender and perhaps a CB radio

For how I use them (and I own 4 minis) the current model lineup is near perfect. The only thing I'd like to see is a lower price. At one time they did start at $500 instead of $400, and the server model is no longer the great deal it once was (when the server software alone was $500 the mini server basically gave you the software for free).

Then there are the posters and lurkers who regularly check back on this thread, drawn by the camaderie and humour that are so well displayed in the majority of posts.

I get a chuckle everytime I visit. It's nice to know one's not alone in (hopelessly?) holding out for a major update of one's favourite Mac computer. Meanwhile, my mid-2007 Mini - my first Mac ever - keeps quietly going about its work. :)

a dedicated external GPU peripheral - something like the superdrive, which provides a functionality thats not needed by most, but necessary for some, which perhaps can utilise a pair of thunderpolt2 ports in link aggregated mode.

The problem is that it just doesn't seem right that Apple would release an all new generation of Mac Mini now, as it's been long overdue for a Haswell update for some time. This means if Apple was planning a redesign, then they must have been waiting for Broadwell, since it'd be a much better fit for such a small machine, while Haswell isn't a huge upgrade compared to what we get now except in terms of the GPU (but graphics has never been a focus of the Mini).

If they were going to update to Haswell they could have done that a long time ago, as I can't imagine the time required to design and tool for a new model in the current case would have taken long at all.

There is absolutely no reason to skip a chip generation just because they intend to redesign on the following one. The two are independent events. Otherwise they could have released a haswell candidate, then a broadwell redesign in 2015. That would have been a normal release cycle, just as they did with Sandy-->Ivy. What is more likely is that they were left without a good chip candidate for the cheapest mini. CPUs in the past have been those used in the 13" and 15" macbook pros. The 2013 13" macbook pros used cpus that cost significantly more than the prior generation, and Apple was unlikely to test and order others specifically for the mini.

Not sad at all.

A new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming, but thus far the tech advances available have not been significant enough to justify incorporation in a new model. The current Mini works with current and anticipated software.

A new Mac Mini will almost certainly come with tech advances that do make a significant difference to the average user………

However the average antsy geek will almost certainly soon be disappointed, thus will soon be anticipating the next new Mac Mini, which will almost certainly be coming.

Waiting...

I'm good with waiting until next year for a new mini, because:

-By then, it will come loaded with a Yosemite and it's subsequent updates

-It also gives time for SSD prices to drop, so I can get one in my new mini

-I want the next mini to be a big jump in specs, not an incremental one, so it future-proofs the purchase

Bose? Did you mean Beats? LOL....

Why are so many people amped up for broadwell? From what I've heard so far the CPU performance increase will be minimal. The gpu will be improved but can't see it being more than 30% increase over haswell gt1 gt2 and gt3... The Haswell gt3e is quite a good performer. Intel continues to improve TDP... That doesn't matter much for a desktop. If a Mini is released this month it'll be Haswell.

Skylake will be much more impressive than Broadwell. Because Intel is behind maybe they will release core m and Broadwell U and have Skylake ready for the Q3...
