Why are so many people amped up for broadwell? From what I've heard so far the CPU performance increase will be minimal. ... Intel continues to improve TDP... That doesn't matter much for a desktop.

If it's running cooler you can run it longer, faster, harder. Turbo is a good thing, throttling is a bad thing.

The Mini doesn't have thermal issues or overhearing problems. The footprint of the machine is fine as is. The Broadwell chips that would go into the Mini would have the same TDP to get the small CPU and GPU performance increases.

That's not true, the mini is so load when it's working, you can't hear a thing over that jet engine sounding fan.

And it does throttle the speed.

this thread is 10 months OLD

is the new mini coming yet?
I need one

----------

-It also gives time for SSD prices to drop, so I can get one in my new mini

what makes you think apple is going to give you a "good deal" on hard drives or memory?
you must not have bought an apple product before j/k :D

SSD prices are at an all time low
don't expect them to get any cheaper other than black friday
and don't expect deals from new apple products
buy your own SSD and install it

Anybody looking forward to Oct. 16? Or have your hopes been shattered beyond recognition many moons ago that you don't even dare dream of that day ever coming? lol

What are the chances that it'll be redesigned into a slimmer fanless version of it's former self?

My prediction IF it's released: Same design, cheaper price OR more storage and RAM. Haswell processor.

I bet a redesign will come next October with broadwell.

Either way, I'm buying a mini October 17th

I'm hoping that it's just a 'refresh' with a speed bump, but I'm still fearful that Apple have got tired of waiting for Broadwell and have decided to slap Haswell in the the all new, locked down mini. It just seems like the most logical explanation for not Haswelling it before now.

The reason I don't think they would do that is because haswell would require a fan while broadwell, and thus a potential redesign, would be fabless

Really? My 2011 i5 can occasionally achieve take-off volumes when Photoshopping; more annoyingly it will *always* crank up after ten minutes of fullscreen video.
I've never heard mine. 97%CPU 89DEG C 2200 RPM not a sound.
...and of course now that I'm trying to provoke the fans, I can't.

20 minutes of full screen HD 720 Flash Youtube content and the CPU Die temperature rises from 50ºC to 71ºC.

20 minutes of ditto but HTML5 and the temperature drops back to 62ºC.

Fan refuses to budge from 1800rpm. I'm curious about your 2200rpm, because in my experience when the fan starts to pump it doesn't hang around: it jumps into the low 3000s in seconds. Does my 2011 2.3GHz/i5 have a different base speed to your model?

The CPU was very unstressed throughout the above. I'm the only user logged into the mini, whereas there are usually one or two other accounts open at the same time. I haven't forced ClickToFlash on either of my daughters – both avid consumers of Youtube, obviously – and am wondering if the recent Flash Player 15 is rather more Mac friendly than previous versions?

Will keep iStat Menus loaded for a few weeks, and will keep an ear out for major spin-ups.

Ah, didn't realise that. Getting an upgraded mini in the current form factor is good news! Would implementing fanless Broadwell in a mini-sized enclosure preclude the use of HDDs?

Who knows. If small form factor is what they are looking for, they might use pcie ssds but only Apple knows and time will tell.

My 2012 idles at 45deg and 1800 rpm. When doing a Blue Ray rip with handbrake for 4-5 hours it will run at 97%CPU, 89deg, and fluctuate between 2000-2200rpm. My machine has never been above 2300rpm from what I have seen.
