The problem with the prospects of a Core M series processor in a new mac mini is that the graphics performance will be mediocre at best: Iris Pro 5200 (Haswell) >>> Intel HD 5300 (Core M).

One of the main reasons I want to upgrade from my current mac set-up is to migrate to a (hopeful) mini with Iris Pro capabilities, so thoughts of a Core M processor make it a no-go for me.

Do what I did and build a Hackintosh using an Nvidia GTX card. I personally used the GTX 760, leaps and bounds better than even the iris pro. And it runs OS X absolutely flawlessly, even better than my Mac mini.

The thread is racking up posts at the rate of about 200 a week at present.

No one outside Apple knows how many Mac Mini sales are being racked up at present.

What will almost certainly come first, the 5,000th post, or the 12th generation Mac Mini?

Did anyone else here buy the first?

I did in May 2005. I also bought the seventh about April 2009, and am still using it.

Care to share your parts list?

Sure:

i7 4770k 3.5Ghz quad core

ASUS GTX 760 2GB Graphics card (note, the GT 750M in the rMBP has 2GB as well, but video card RAM is only one of many factors that lead to a good card, so don't judge by VRAM)

16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz RAM

Three 1080P LG 23" display panels.

It is every bit as stable and reliable as a computer bought from the Apple Store, but it does take some config to get it working initially. Usually nothing harder than a few Google searches. It took a lot of work to get it all working. Getting it to boot wasn't the hard part, I put OS X Mavericks on it just fine using a few tools from tonymacx86. The hard part was getting the sound, video, etc. to work properly. However I have done all the hard work needed to get it working so if you ever buy a machine using the same motherboard or GPU I can send you the appropriate .kext files to get them to work natively in OS X. There are many motherboards out there (especially from Gigabyte) that will work almost with zero effort, I picked a hard one cause I like ASUS.

The machine all by itself cost like $800-$1000, I can't quite remember. But it was a hell of a lot cheaper than an iMac at the same performance level. I love Apple's computers but I need a good GPU and can't afford to spend $2000+ just to get it.

I've been really tempted to do this. It's just so much cheaper and one can slap a much better GPU and Processor for a much better performance. May I ask what motherboard did you use?

The October 16th Apple event is being called "It's been way too long". New Mac Mini CONFIRMED!:):p;):apple::rolleyes::mad:

The new Mac mini is almost certainly coming

I'm very excited about this. At last the prophecy of this thread is almost certainly true. Hopefully we get a beautiful new device engineering with all the horsepower and upgradability.

It's been way too long indeed Apple. Faster update that little cute box to catch up with current specs. And don't you dare to change its nice design!!

Yeah it's weird, the only product that really fits that phrase is the Mini - yet why would Apple have it as the focus of the event? Other than its introduction it's always a footnote when it's updated, and considering Apple's likely small profit margins on it no wonder.

It certainly hasn't been "too long" since the last iPad, Macbook or iMac update - but who knows what TimC feels, possibly "too long" to wait for a Retina iMac as people have been expecting it for a while now.

I've always felt that Apple could make some inroads into the enterprise, or at least perhaps small business with the Mini as the vanguard, albeit the iPad has taken that role. Who knows, but I'm highly skeptical Apple would draw the focus of the event on a Mini refresh.

Sorry guys, I have sources who have confirmed with me this morning that there will be no new mac mini for 2014. The event will not even mention mac mini.

That would be a bad joke by apple for the folk in this thread. By the way GabrielleR had sources that new mac mini is almost certainly coming almost a year ago. I dont believe those sources anymore :)
