When installing your own drive you can change the thermals of the machine.
Interesting. Will have a proper read when I'm more awake. I don't believe that the fan behaviour has changed since I put the SSD in, but having swapped out the stock HDD for a 1TB unit within a couple of weeks of purchase I guess the sensing would have already been 'broken' (if that article is to be believed)?

But if neither of the drives are Apple, how have I got a value for 'hard drive temperature' in iStat Menus? And values for both drives in Trim Enabler?

Curious...

----------

Might you have interfered with the cooling system when installing the SSD?
I don't know, but I'd have thought that would be more likely to result in a binary 'broken / not broken' scenario.

I didn't even know I had a problem until Crosscreek said his (2012 vs my 2011) mini never got above 2300rpm!

The only time I have heard or seen the fan on my 20212 go above 1805 is when I ran the BOINC app for SETI at Hime. I never used it after trying it for a few minutes when I saw the fans max out.

I bought the mini because I knew it would be quiet. I was using a 2010 and 2008 MacBook which had fans that mostly never stopped spinning on high even while watching a TV show in iTunes. Those MacBooks were known for that, especially the black 2008.

Only 2 more Tuesdays until the reputed October event!

Do people think that:

A) The mini might see a silent (Tuesday) update beforehand?

B) It will be an addendum to the main event?

C) It will be totally ignored and descend further into obscurity and obsolescence?

What is the latest month of the year they have released new products? Late October? November before (USA) Thanksgiving?

Should be relatively crudless – it's not yet six months since I SSDed it.

Here we go!

That was down-sampling a playlist of ~450 MP3s to 192kbps during an iPhone sync.

Do you have the discrete GPU in yours ?.......if so that could be the reason. You could have a sensor problem also. Evidently your fan does not ramp up slowly like the 2012. You must have only 2 speeds.

Looking at EveryMac on your set up I noticed you do not have discrete GPU. I had that confused with another Mini. I think you have a problem with your temp sensor. I really don't see another explanation other than thats just the way 2011 was designed to handle high CPU temps.

The current Mac Pro was announced about October last year, but it wasn't released until the last part of December.

The original Mac Mini was released about mid January 2005.

Unlike a lot of US brands, Apple doesn't seem to bother with annual updates, and "the Xmas market" and the like. Their products generally come out when they are sorted and ready to go.

I think for iPhones/iPads and probably the laptops the Christmas/holidays market is important. For the Mini I would agree Oct vs Dec vs Jan availability isn't going to be a big factor.

I think we're getting into lala land here. The Mini is the poor cousin. The cheapie.

If it follows the rest of the Mac releases this year, it will be lower capability and slightly cheaper price. This hasn't been a great year for Macs, except lower prices (and don't ask why).

Hence the Love that Air, television commercial. Tests had some MacBook Airs taking 30% longer to write to disk. There's
nothing to write home about. And the runt of an iMac - this isn't a landmark year for new Mac models. Waiting out Haswell is not doing anything for Apple's reputation this year.

I held out until the end of August to see if a Mid-2014 Mini appeared, and it didn't. Given my perception of how the Mac models are going this year… I needed to make a purchase, so I got an i7 Mini and haven't looked back. Months of productivity has been worth the price, and…

Even if the Mini does get a refresh, I don't think I'll be too disappointed, the way things have been going.

Good points. We may find ourselves in the same boat as the Mac Pro tower fans, working to keep our great-running, out-of-date and discontinued machines a little more up-to-date. I've got an urge to buy another one. While the mini does not do all that I would like it to it really does all that I need.

Yeah, it's the HD 3000 assigned 512MB, although GPU (presumably!) isn't a factor when resampling MP3s.

I'll admit that I'm completely ignorant of the relationship between temperature and fan speed. To me it looks as though the fan is simply very responsive to changes in CPU die temperature, and that if the fan didn't hit 5000rpm+ then the CPU would be frying itself. Again, this might be normal for the 2011/2.3GHz model.

Looking at the last 24 hours of fan speed it appears that I *did* have a period of ~2300-2500rpm activity last night which would correspond to watching streamed video. Didn't notice any increased noise at time, but at least it means my fan isn't simply 'two speed'!

Is it possible that apple will replace mini with a less capable model? I can see them adding a less capable cheap option along with old ones but replacing it seems like a bad move. If i knew they will do it i would have to buy now because we dont have refurbished store around.

They seem to be trending that way with the MBA and IMac. I wouldn't worry about it though because there will be plenty in the refurb store when the new one shows up.

That's a mystery to me. It just must be the way the 2011 works.
I think I'll go along with the 'it just works (like that)' line.

Not a major irritant. If I'd asked any computer I'd previously owned to turn 1.1 days' worth of 320kbps audio into 192kbps audio it would have just turned round and laughed at me. The mini managed it, noisily, in quarter of an hour, and immediately returned to 'ambient' temperature and fan speed.

I can live with that.

They may have throttled the fan up instead of throttling the CPU down. :)

There's always next tuesday... :(

And next Thursday! The October 16 event indicates that Thursday is almost certainly the new Tuesday. And before anyone objects, I would like to remind you what thread this is and what standards of evidence we usually apply when adopting a new rumor here.

LOL... well Thursday is almost Friday (had to do that :p), but we'll see if Apple does indeed go through with the event on the 16th.

I'm all for it, especially if the Mac Mini gets updated and not into something lesser than...

The recent posts in this thread have been somewhat sobering (not a good year for Macs), but if Apple rethinks the Mini into something akin of that cheap iMac I will be disappointed. That said, I am still holding out hope they won't go the route of the 2014 MBA and 21.5" iMac.

If Monday the 13th is a holiday (it is some places and not others) then Tuesday comes on Wednesday next week.
