Actually, the Gigabyte Brix Pro i5 is the perfect mac mini:
- 4 USB 3 ports
- integrated Intel HD Iris Pro 5200 graphics (excellent)
- Haswell i5 (good compromise of performance and moderate power consumption)
- standard m-sata connector for SSD
- SATA connector for 2.5" HDD or SSD (yes, I do want that)
- half-size mini PCIe WiFi/BT module
- Ethernet port
- two RAM slots (up to 16 GB)

This system allows me to use commodity PC components, which is great.

What Apple could bring to the table:
- better thermal design, better fan
- PCIe SSD (good for performance, bad because proprietary)
- Broadwell chips (would bring a little better performance and perhaps significantly less power)
- Thunderbolt (I couldn't care less)

What Apple could do to screw it up:
- soldered RAM
- no additional SATA bay
- only one or two USB 3 ports
- proprietary SSD
- no Ethernet port

Will they do it? If yes, I am buying it. If no, I am buying the Gigabyte and going hackintosh.

We think alot alike. Really Apple could take something like that and put their $$$ engineering into it and make the damn thing SILENT and fast!

There is not enough time in my life to go Hackintosh :( I am getting to involved in OSX to go back to Windows. Which is only like 1% more likely than Hackintosh. And it would be Win 10, of course.

If I may play devil's advocate:

I can live with a proprietary SSD and even soldered RAM, but only just, if the price is not too brutal. (Hint, hint, Apple.)

The Ethernet port and (some) USB3 ports can be traded off for another TB port. Especially if they are TB2 and Apple offers individual adapters or a nifty connection hub via one of the TB2 ports (USB3, Ethernet, TB, eSATA, FW800, etc).

No additional SATA is harder to live with. I like a clone of the boot drive on board for frequent scheduled backups and a fast switchover, if required. OTOH, it does take up a bucketload of space, use a bunch of energy and generate a bunch of heat, and is the most fragile and unreliable part of the machine these days. This one hangs in the balance for now. But clearly it is only a matter of time before platter drives are completely ditched in favour of SSD only, proprietorial or otherwise.

I stay with my idea. The real absolute most somewhat likely reason the mini has not come forth is because we were thinking Tuesday when we should have been thinking Thursday :)

You keep that up and I will convert. Maybe the prophet just misheard the gods. Tuesday, Thursday. It's an easy mistake to make.

Besides, defending this fruitless Tuesday gig is getting old.

All praise Thursday. A mighty EMP from above awaits any who say otherwise.

And we have critical mass! So easy to mishear Tuesday for Thursday. It will not be long now :)

If you say "Tuesday, Thursday" 4355 times your tounge will go numb and you can't tell the difference between them!

Which, is, obviously what happened. So we went a little deep down the "Tuesday" rabbit hole. Oh well. 4 days till Thursday.

We can handle it. Well, maybe on a good day we can :)

Maybe Apple will reborn the full Macintosh name as brand, so we will be forced to name our Mac by its formal name again, Macintosh Professional, Macintosh miniature, Macintosh Book, Macintosh Book Air, Macintosh Book Professional, and of course the Ive Macintosh (aka iMac)
Thanks the retina moniker isn't now part of the name.

iMac becomes Mac 21/27/32(?)
Mac Mini stays
Mac Pro stays
MacBook Air/Pro becomes MacBook 12/14/16?

Are you saying I look fat in my new Sacred Mini Thursday devotional robe?

I am told the same thing happens if you go into a desert alone, fast for 7 days and 7 nights, then gnaw on a certain cactus plant.

Sounds good to me.

It makes sense. Totally.

Tuesday: named after Tyr, the Norse god of war. Tyr just wants to fight with us, taunt us, torture us. His Roman counterpart is Mars, protector of cattle.

Thursday: named after Thor, the Norse god of thunder. Think "Thunderbolt", right? He protects both gods and humans, and demands no human sacrifices. His wife is a fertility goddess. He has a giantess for a mistress. He drives a chariot pulled by terrifying goats.

OBVIOUSLY, Tyr/Mars is working for Microsoft! Cattle, and all that. He's fighting for the other side. It's Thor we want! Thor who wields the thunderbolt! The new mini will come on Thursday!

Who cares about its namin...

I Doubt an 32" iMac, as an 14/16" MacBook Apple has no reason to Increase MacBook Pros size, the 12" rMBA its required since having an 12" iPad has no sense sell an smaller MacBook.

To Date, still doubts on Mac Mini to be update (or at least stay on production).

I keep thinking bck to when, now long ago, Mr. Cook said words to the effect... We will have a large and exciting array of new products in the pipeline this year.

And as exciting as the previous announcement was, it certainly does not qualify for a large amount of products in the pipeline.

A company of Apple's size can afford a few more items, especially around Holiday times! Like a retina 27 inch, at least one new mini, maybe three, new iPad (coming) and maybe new laptops.

But please do NOT drop USB 3.0 ports. That would be silly. It is not time for that yet. Ethernet rules!

Maybe it is just Apple TV

Another minor spec bump for Mini?
I really wish Apple super-size the Mini
with real graphic power, cooler unit,
It's possible they release a Mini
the size of Apple TV for light computing.
Mac Nano/

If this doesn't happen this year you can always get an iWatch and send your heartbeat to your BFF whenever an iMac Mini refresh rumor crops up.

I could have them make a cheaper mac pro.
1 gpu 1 soldered pcie ssd in place of the other gpu.

In my house 1 mini must remain close to the shape of the current mini. I could replace my other minis with lesser mac pros. Ie 1500 price stripped down to basics

Not going to happen. A stripped down MP would confuse the masses...

I'm still not sure we're going to see a new mini this week or this year. But I really hope I'm wrong.

I still think were going to see the mini reimagined [and renamed]. This will be their push into the home; AppleTV on steroids.

I doth like the way you think. :p

As long as the Mac Minis are the same powerful, tough little machines they have been (i.e. lasting many years) and are within the the same price range they've been, cool with me.

Why would a xMac confuse people? MacPro is a professional work station, the Mac Mini is entry level mac and the xMac strikes a balance and performance between the Mini and Pro.

So what we'll get is the exact same internals as an iMac, but in a box without the screen. It'll be called "Mac" and iMac will have its nomenclature redefined from the original meaning - the "Internet Mac" to the "Integrated Mac"

...hey look, some lint.

.I won't buy a computer with old technology. I would like it to have Wifi ac, a ssd by default, and removable RAM. I don't think I am asking for too much. I hope Apple makes me buy my first Mac:)

The current i7 model is the high water mark for this product - it's very fast, very quiet and the parts are user replaceable.

I would not make the mistake of waiting for the next model. Looking at the way Apple is going, it will be designed to maximize profits....at the cost of user-friendliness. The next model will be barely faster, it will use a lot less power and all the bits will be soldered in so that you pay through the nose if you want it with more RAM or more hard drive capacity. You'll get your AC, but it is really not going to help increase your experienced wifi speed much in real life. And you'll get an intro offer to become a cloud storage junkie - yippee.

I can understand people's desire to get an updated Mac Mini but, really there is such a thing as being too clever. Buy the current model while you can.

The above is what worries me also and why I had no regrets in buying the i7 last month. It will last me several years. I was still using a 2008 black MB till I bought the Mini.

The colorful apple logo on the invite was a dead giveaway. The Macintosh brand is returning. New Macintosh available with or without display. No more iMac no more Mini. Just one product going forward. They've been on a de-i branding kick, first to go was iWatch for simply Apple Watch. This was a statement. EVERYONE expected iWatch, but that didn't happen. Now Apple Macintosh makes a triumphant return. They may opt for Apple Mac but either way the i is going and the Apple brand becomes significant in the name once again.

Well at least that's my theory.
