So, all jokes aside, I really need—sorry, want—a Mac mini as soon as possible.

I'm going to use it to run Roon from RoonLabs.com, so I'm thinking about the middle-range model upgraded with a 256GB SSD. It'll be more than enough for my needs, but it would obviously suck if Apple was to release a new model in, say, March.

What do you guys think?

Looks like Apple's Mac Mini is near extinction. Thanks to Tim Cook.
The death of the Mac mini started to be predicted virtually the day of its announcement. It was to answer the question "Why doesn't Apple offer a stripped-down Mac that is more affordable?" Its positioning then for Steve Jobs in 2005 was the same as for Tim Cook now.

I think it's evident from the article on Apple's ARM chip design, development and testing using the Mini that Apple really has a use along with entry consumer markets and App developers for the continued usefulness of the Mini.

It's a nice little computer even though it has been neutered from what the 2012 was but still has appeal as entry level Mac for those who want do basic stuff with.

The great thing about legacy Minis is that any new Mini increases the value of the recent old ones, purely by how they neuter the new one in some way. So those 2014 Minis might be worth their weight in bitcoins shortly!

You think exactly what I think, even down to the precise BTO I would be buying if I could stomach getting a 2+ year old spec for full+ price. An updated one with Skylake would be nice, especially if you will ever use it for something where the performance of the integrated graphics matters.

In summary:
If you need a Mac mini now, buy one.
If you want a Mac mini now, first consider that the new Mac mini is almost certainly coming.

I agree. The new mini is almost certainly coming. Unless its not, of course, then it's almost certainly not coming.

Seems to be true for the quad-core 2012, but that is probably because they outperform any 2014 model so they are still very viable. But the dual-core models, not so much.

Would you rather own a dual core 2012 or dual core 2014 model? I happily own the former :)

It depends on the use. I'm currently using two minis as entertainment centers, a 2012 base and a 2009 base model. For those the 2014 base model would do fine and save $100. Then I've got a third mini which is a 2009 base with 4GB ram and a 120GB SSD which I used for a couple of years until my retirement last month for work. Processor-wise even the base 2014 is about twice as fast. Presumably it would still be possible to replace the HDD in the 2014 with an SSD, so the 2014 would still do the job for $100 less. My 4th mini is a 2012 quad-core that I'm using as a server. It runs a Windows VM plus other functions and I like having the quad core for that although the reality is it probably would do fine with a dual core since it loafs. The 2009 mini server it replaced was strained on occasion but all the processors in the 2012 or 2014s are much faster.

So I'm not scared about the 2014s. But then I've got a 27" retina iMac for the "heavy lifting".

If Apple released a new Mini with Skylake and soldered RAM I'd bite the bullet and pay up for a "future proof" amount of RAM (8 probably combined with ssd). Is that the ideal machine no but there comes a point where we have to conceed what we'd really like isn't coming. My 2009 maxhine got an extra lease of life with ram/hdd in 2012 but it can't last forever and unless we get a new Mini I will be one of many forced to chose between a used machine or an iMac
