Yes, the world must be great from up high where you sit.

I'm with the realists here, the folks who can be honest with their friends; call it how it is and not put my head in the sand and think that being taken advantage of is ok.
And some of us are grateful for what we have. I'm 52 years old, we didn't have computers like these when I was growing up. I'm happy with my Apple products and there's no way I'm going to allow the opinions of a total stranger to damage that. :)

NUC skull canyon unboxing. Just imagine this were a Mac Mini!

It may not have the specs and grunt (thus associated bragging rights) of a NUC Skull Canyon but……

The new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming….. and it will run OS X; which, far more than any hardware, is what makes a Mac.

I'm not dismissing your right to be happy with what you have, but the arrogance you carry in that perception is not becoming.

And guess what, I'm no spring chicken either, I also grew up with no computers. But unlike you, I'm open to new learning, so I embrace the opinions of others and use them to help me challenge my own beliefs.

I'm not dismissing anyone's right to acquire new learning about computer hardware, but the arrogance with which some carry the perception that others should be as savvy, is not becoming.

And guess what? I also grew up with no computers (31 before I first used one, the original Mac 128K; 52 before I first owned one…. the original Mac Mini) or TV for that matter (and I still don't own one), and I am happy that now they open up a wide world and broad range of opinions on a variety topics, and the ability to do stuff.

In the end, computers are only a machine, a tool, a conduit, but in my experience Mac and OS X has been, and continues to be more seamless and hassle free than the alternatives. If you like mucking around with computers, there are a range of choices available. For folks who just want to do stuff relatively hassle free, the current Mac Mini does the job….. and if you can wait the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming.

I find myself dismayed by this continuing argument. I grew up with computers (my parents got an Apple ][+ when I was in grade school, and it quickly became my obsession), and I love OS X. I dig SFF PCs, and love my Minis. But I would also love to see OS X on a broad range of devices; instead, Apple lately seems to be focussing their efforts on a few targeted subsets of the desktop market. That's great for when I need a device for a purpose that fits within Apple's specifications; it leaves me without the ability to use OS X when I need to do something else.

Both sides are right here. Apple makes superb desktop computing products. Yet, Apple continues to refuse to make a wide range of desktop products. Perhaps they're restricting themselves to the most profitable subsets of the market; regardless, it is a point upon which people can criticize this company.

I've been wondering why we are having all of this pointless bickering lately. I think the last paragraph above sums up the problem quite well. If Apple makes a computer that does just what you want to do, then it's great and you think Apple is great. If Apple doesn't make a computer that does what you want it to do, then you are frustrated if you see that they could easily do so, but won't. I will be curious to see if the new mac mini will satisfy more people or fewer people. Come on kids, if we keep fighting, mommy and daddy Apple won't make us a new Mac Mini.

Party Pooper

On another note I could see Apple possibly creating a Nano Mac that would Use Core M and be fanleess and pocketable that could be easily tethered to an iPad Pro to run OS X applications through a tethering App and could provided as an accessory.

It could possibly fit in the iPad Pro keyboard and could use the smart connector.

It would require a power connection maybe through the smart connector or lightening connector.

Anyways, just thinking out of the box to solve Apples detachable tablet problem but still be able to run desktop applications if necessary.

You heard it hear first so if Apple tries to patent it I want a percentage for my idea......lol

It's a shame we have to do Apples innovating for them.

The keyboard Nano Mini could include a USB Type C port for accessory connectors and it should also have a trackpad. The tethering App would allow switching between IOS and OSX. Of course if the iPad Pro is disconnected from the keyboard IOS would only be available. It could be as thin as the new MacBooks without the screen. It could really make an iPad Pro a Pro.

Cloud based OS X could be an option for an iPad Pro with work being done in the cloud. I really don't know.

As for that Solu. "Advanced cloud-linked OS". I don't want any computer that needs an internet connection in order to operate. "Social Computer". And I'm not very sociable either.

Yeah, I agree, I don't want to be tied to the cloud. The hardware concept is kinda interesting, but I'm not really interested in a machine that is in essence a terminal for someone else's server somewhere in the cloud. (Besides, here in Ohio, broadband access is spotty. Heck, even cell phone coverage is spotty. Machines here have to be able to work offline...)

An Apple personal file server would be an interesting idea--like iCloud, it would allow the user to view and manipulate his data using the computer that's most convenient, but it would also allow a measure of control unavailable with icloud.

I guess I should take my discussion to the iPad Pro forum because it really has nothing to due with the Mini. It would really be a new kind of Mac for the iPad Pro to provide OS X utilisation although they already have remote connection capability which is really slow.

Anyway I guess the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming.

I just built mine. Will do further testing. So far, excellent. Samsung Pro 950 256GB. Sweet.

Please let us know what you think of the fan noise. That's the only thing I'm a bit worried about. I have saved a shopping cart with NUC, SSD and RAM, but will wait until WWDC before I pull the trigger.

Looks like the Skull Canyon rigs are just now finally shipping. I'm still wondering if there are yield issues at Intel with the i7-6xx0HQ and/or other Iris Pro 540/580 equipped CPUs - Skull Canyon is months behind its original schedule, and it's not clear if they are shipping those chips in any volume yet. Hopefully they are as Apple certainly wouldn't announce anything using those CPUs until they were assured of adequate supply.

That said, I see the Iris Pro 580 has *finally* shown up on the Passmark GPU benchmark list, and it's a good ~25% faster than the Iris Pro 6200, and ~60% better than the Iris Pro 5200. It's benchmarking on par with the nVidia GeForce GTX 645 (Desktop card! not mobile) / GeForce GTX 550 Ti, and the ATI Radeon R9 M370X / Radeon HD 6900M. Defiantly good enough to garner more interest from people who like to play games.

That said, I'm also seeing multiple mentions of fan noise / heat with the Skull Canyon. Not enough to make it fail or anything, but enough if I was running the Mac Mini R&D team, I would be putting some extra attention on making sure the cooling solution / airflow / board layout was world class.

I guess I still hold out hope.

Can you try to do a Handbrake benchmark and a Geekbench 3 multi core.

Not this time, sorry. Nothing gets installed. I am building it for a client. Once I get BIOS updated, drivers installed, and do some Youtube watching, I will report back on fan noise and heat. That is it.

That's fine. I seen some Handbrake and Geekbench already on it. Just wanted to confirm.

Yeah, I figured that those would be around quickly on the various NUC websites. It is almost strange the hype/mystery that this little new computer is causing. Could this be the "new Mac Mini" in disguise? LOL!
