Fawlty not Faulty. Just had to look it up while waiting for the next Mini.

Haha. That's pretty much the way I feel about Apple in general with their stupid watches and photos app, and family-friendly OSX with all the extra **** I don't need (never been a man who loves families). My iPod mini with it's small screen used to drive me crazy. With it strapped on my arm while exercising, I often mistakenly tapped the podcast app instead of the lap timer. And my iPhone 3GS was the same and with an expensive contract. I dropped and smashed the iPod's front glass (Thank God!), and stopped the contract on my iPhone. now I'm using a BIG-screen sim-free Asus Zenfone 2 Laser, and the monthly charges dropped from $90-$100 to $25-$30. I love it.

I have to give it to the marketers who came up with "the Cloud." Just put it in the cloud = just put all of your stuff on my computer, it will be fine, trust me. And the fee I will charge you for using your own stuff for the rest of your life won't be all that much, just don't think about it.

Also, the new mac mini is almost certainly coming!

CLOUD: complete loss of user data.

They really should make the new Mini with a SSD. If the base rMBP has 128GB SSD then surely the Mac Mini could have the same. It would be utterly embarrassing if Apple put a spinning HDD in a newly released Mac Mini in 2016.

IMHO, they should be making every computer with an SSD, and for those with a screen, Retina. Time to take computer performance to the next level across the board, and eliminate oxymorons from their lineup like the 21.5" 4K iMac that comes with a 5400RPM HD.

It also assumes reliable and unlimited internet, which is especially a problem on mobile devices.

The idea though is as you say to move everything towards subscription-based models. The reasons are simple. First: reliable, constant and predictable income over an extended period. Second, things aren't changing as quickly as they used to; people don't need to buy the latest software or hardware nearly as frequently as they used to.

I still like the idea of purchasing something outright and having it in my own hands, personally. I'd have probably found a subscription model more useful back in the days when you had to update things every few years at most.

It is not unusual for my 2011 MacBook Pro to use more than 8 gb of ram, so if I decide to get a new Mac Mini (almost certainly coming), I would not get any less than 16 gb of ram. The 256 gb SSD I installed works great and is enough storage for me, so I would probably take that option as well. Will it be in the shape of a trash can, an Apple TV, the Eiffel Tower. pr be the same as it is now? We shall see, almost certainly.

OS X does eat Ram and needs optimized from the ground up. Apple will probably get around to it when they switch over to their Arm chips.

The good news is that they may have a small SSD so you can keep all your data in iCloud ( for a small monthly fee.)

Went past the Apple store and saw that it had nothing in the front windows. That means to me that they are getting ready for a new ad campaign or new product. Seems hopeful something will come out next Tuesday?

You could be right. Tuesday has long been favourite for new Mac Minis to come, but it has also been known to arrive on other days. It is almost always announced, but on occasion an update has arrived unannounced. Some day or another, the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming.

How many Tuesdays have come and gone since this thread was started?

Talk about a bunch of gossiping old woman over the garden fence.

We have to talk about SOMETHING. How else are we going to get this thread to catch up with Waiting For Skylake MBP thread?

I've seen a post today about Apple discontinuing Mac Pro and Mac Mini – logical next step after discontinuing Thunderbolt Display I suppose. Mac Mini is almost certainly coming, but suddenly the "almost" bit looks ominous.

You never know with Apple. It could well be a case of 'the Mini is dead, long live the Mini' before too long.

A lot of talk of spinning the Mac business off to other companies to build or licensing macOS for a price. Mac Pro people are switching platforms because Apple is unreliable for upgrading their machines.

I really don't care anymore what they do with the Mini after the ruined the 2014 refresh.

I would prefer they just sell me a macOS license I could put on whatever machine I want.

I think that is more wishful thinking than a likelihood reality though.

They tried that in the 1990's and Jobs killed it. It was good for short term cash but was bad for long term business. Bad for the Apple brand as they don't want associated with crappy products not under their control.

And "by 1996 Apple executives were worried that high-end clones were cannibalizing sales of their own high-end computers, where profit margins were highest."

I doubt if too many people would even consider buying it anyways. I don't even know that I would buy it considering how bloated and Ram hungry it has become.

Desktops are not really important to most people anymore. Even professionals have moved on to other workstation because Apple neglects their Pro line so badly.

Apple sells many more laptops than desktops but the iPad Pro is Tim vision of the future of those also.

Once the iPad Pro is bendable, you will be able to form it into a cylinder if that's what you like.

It made sense to stop making the non-retina MacBook Pro and the Thunderbolt monitor. They were very out of date. But the Mac Pro and the mini ... Uh oh.

All kidding aside though Apple sells very few Mac Pros and could easily drop that line without hurting the bottom line at all. I guess the same could be said about the Mini.

iMacs could easily be there only desktop line. People that would normally buy Minis would move up or on.
