The age of electronic hardware innovation is about over.

Nonsense. :) The "Internet of Things" is off and running, VR and AR are starting to gain a foothold, self-driving cars are actually on the road now (something I think is being pushed ahead faster than is warranted), and people are interacting with rudimentary AI every day. Where before electronic innovations were mainly limited to the box on the desktop or the laptop you carried around, they are starting to propagate into every facet of our daily lives.

Apple has been making a significant effort in several of these areas. My biggest complaint with them is that they've basically been ignoring the classic desktop PC world, and as such have been falling behind developments there...

Internet of things is currently running at the level of Dick Tracy's watch.
It's a gimmick that let's total strangers unlock your front door mess with your thermostat, and check video on how baby is doing without your knowledge. To say nothing of the inexcusable DDOS attack they permitted this past weekend via their inadequate design.
It might become real in a decade, if they get serious about security protocols.
Even so the impact will be nowhere near the tsunami brought on by home PC's or cell phones.
How many times a day can you productively reset your thermostat or flip a light switch?
Self driving vehicles? I'll believe them when I see them. Tech has always been full of hype, and I can't count the number of times I've eagerly awaited the kilowatt scale consumer-ready fuel cells coming out next year.

Quantum AI doodads won't let me edit my videos or organize my pics, vids and music any better. Marketing campaigns may get more effective, and we may get more precise warning of the coming megastorms, but there's not much use for such tech in a typical household. It's not going to give me a quantum leap in daily hotdog flavor. I don't need to do finite element analysis on the draft coming up my basement steps.

You have little vision of where the future is headed for better or worse.

There will probably be no more personal computers. More like a personal IA terminal linked to one of the many quantum computers around the world. You will speak all commands to your PA and the so called internet of things in your domicile we obey including any editing of videos, or organizing pics, vids and music.

It will truly be a star trek future or the end of civilization.

speechless - unlikely ;)

I predict this thread will continue strongly after the media event, this sadly is not a positive prediction
I would say that speechless is very likely.
Option 1: Apple releases a new mac mini that fulfils our desires.
Option 2: Apple releases a new mac mini that is again a downgrade, or a very minor upgrade.
Option 3: Apple releases no new mac mini
Option 4: Apple releases something entirely different destroying our need of a new mac mini

All four options will leave you speechless. The first and last one of excitement, the second and third one of disappointment ;)

Here's some video of 80's style talking cars.
HUGE hit, the Biglyest!

I doubt most people will enjoy more speaking appliances, or having to shout "What?" 30 times a day to find out that your housemate was only turning up the heat, and did not want to talk to you at all.

Smartwatch sales are down 50% over last year, when they where the keenest thing ever.

You probably will have no choice once that day arrives

The doom and gloom prediction: Less than 1 day, and 1 hour until mass mac mini extinction. The intel version had a good 10 year run though.

See, if I set my expectations low now, I will end up surprised and happy when the new mini is released tomorrow. It's all about self-reverse psychology.

The anticipation is rising; the clock is ticking down.

The new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming, but will there or won't there be one announced before this day is done?

I think I made a mistake building my hackintosh. I spend to much time in Windows 10 playing games, the hack side runs perfectly with Sierra and I can't bitch about Apple product releases anymore. :(

My bet is Apple will do a minor spec-bump using the same CPUs as in the new 13" Macbook Pro announced at the same time. Maybe they will make 8GB of RAM and at least a Fusion drive on the base model. While shedding ports on the Macbook Pro looks likely, I hope they do not get rid of the SD card reader, USB-A ports, HDMI port, and the miniDisplay ports.

Apple will be happy to sell you all the dongles you need.;)
