One came for me, but it was a used 2012 i7 2.6. I put 16GB RAM and 2 SSDs in it, and now I've got a new Pro Tools machine. Get 'em while you can. Remember that you won't be able to upgrade or mod anything yet to be released. That being said, the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming.

You can have 8 or 16 gb of ram and a terabyte fusion drive with a 128gb SSD portion added to the base mini, at which point the MacBook and mini would be more fully comparable

Maybe a better comparison would be the 2.6ghz 2014 Mini vs the 1.3ghz 2016 MacBook, since they can be configured the same? The Mini scores 6626 on Geekbench3 and the MacBook is 6518.

With 8gb RAM and 256gb SSD, the MacBook is $1400 and the Mini is $800. You should be able to get a pretty nice screen, mouse and keyboard for the $600 difference. :)

Apple is so busy selling iPhones the don't care about desktops. I would like to Upgrade my HT and I don't have a suitable Apple pc for a 4k tv. This is why I am playing with the lenevo m700 tinys.

My anger at Apple runs deep. Simply because they won't build a desk top for my Home Theater. Their decision is preventing my purchase of a 65 inch 4k tv and a new pre pro that handles 4k tv.
So they are harming two other industries Sony for the tv and lets say Marantz for the pre pro . I hold my anger in check because my 1080p tv is okay and 4k tv's keep dropping in price.

To be honest, I find 4K to be very underwhelming.

The next step beyond 1080p isn't 4K; it's OLED and HDR. OLED sets are STUNNING.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I have had one for a year and while it's crystal clear, it's no big deal. If you walk right up on it it's as clear as a few feet away though.
I miss my old Panasonic Plasma.

Dunno where some folks get quaint ideas such as this:
He's claiming to use a base mini from 8 years ago - which is not suitable for modern users, no matter how modest their use. You are going to run into MASSIVE problems even browsing the web on a machine like that. And forget about using things like Office 2016.

Justifies decisions to spend up large on the latest gear, I guess, maybe even maxed out to ensure it is "future proof"….. Which seems rather contradictory. Maxed out or base model, computers do eventually get left behind in one area or another as tech moves on. The most recent OS and apps may not be available, as well as some aspects of connectivity. If these are irrelevant, as they are to me, an older computer is fine.

When I moved from the original 2005 Mac Mini to the 2009, replacement was more cost effective than repair when the HDD and power supply failed, partly because there were significant benefits, from my point of view. It continues to work fine for my purposes, upgraded to 5 GB RAM and Mountain Lion, but still running the HDD it came with back in 2009. Sooner or later I will almost certainly be faced with the same decision. At this stage I still se no significant benefit in the most recent apps and hardware, so repair is favourite. The new Mac Mini, which is almost certainly coming, may shift the balance to favour replacement.

My own situation is similar to this:
I'm currently using a base Mini from 2007 for my HTPC, and I also do light browsing on it. No problems at all with the browser (I'm using Chrome, and I've upgraded to 2 GB of RAM, which gives me plenty of room when running under OS X 10.6).

My mother is using a base Mini from 2009. Again, no problems browsing. (I've upgraded her RAM to 4 GB; that was necessary, given the increased resource demands of current OS X.)

And yeah, I don't use Office 2016. Why would I? I don't do anything that involves Microsoft Office myself. Nor does my mother. (And yeah, Office is one of the worst office applications you can choose, if you're limited in RAM or CPU. There are many better choices out there.)
No problem browsing the web here.

I do have an older version of Office for Mac installed, but seldom use if. Pages and Numbers may not be as fully featured as Word and Excel, but they are easier to use, and fine for my needs as a teacher.

I've been saving up money every week waiting for a good Mac Mini. It's been a while, might buy a car or put a down payment on a house instead. :D

Why the waiting for that hypothetical "good" Mac Mini of your dreams? Do you have a real use / need for one? Or is it just a desire for bragging rights to some maxed out paperweight? Whatever, it is almost certainly not coming.

Really do need a Mac Mini? Go out an get one specced to suit your needs, albeit not your desires.

No real need for a Mac Mini? You might as well spend on something more worthwhile to your situation.

I still have mine :) (v-series, 65")
As to why a mini for 4k for your HTPC? Because you don't just use it for movies - if you did, why not just get a Roku box?
My primary computer - (keyboard & trackpad on the coffee table).
I likely won't migrate until I can get an OLED driven at 120Hz (need a mini that'll drive it). :)

I was mostly joking, kind of something that crossed my mind and made me chuckle. I didn't elaborate "good" either since thats clearly subjective.

My needs are a solid processor for video encoding, bare minimum quad core with HT preferably. And although not a need I could benefit quite a bit from an ultra wide display.

I also need and want to stay in the MacOS ecosystem so I don't need to buy all new software. I also utilize their cloud services and such plus I just really enjoy it. AND I want the latest tech, TB, Wifi AC, BT, etc etc which rules out the 2012 plus its CPU is dated by todays standards.

The Mac Pro is over spec'd and over priced for my needs. And a ultra wide iMac seems like an unrealistic expectation nor do I have desk space for a 27" iMac + 34-38" UW monitor.

I don't think a Mini with a quad core CPU is an unrealistic expectation however I find it unlikely we will see it. I just want that option, top spec Mini i7 quad core all the models don't need to have quad core.

Unfortunately I don't think we will see that and I'll do what Apple prefers and get an 27" iMac which will be a compromise of sorts.

Admittedly first world problems lol

I would consider the imac too but it would look goofy stashing the lame old 27" imac screen behind the awesome screen I actually want to use.

I think someone else mentioned this, but here's the solution. Just turn that iMac around - easy access to the ports, and it won't clash with your awesome screen.:)

Lol I know we arent being overly serious but I would consider it if the 5k iMac screen wasnt so good. Its not something I would want to store away.

Turning it around would be funny, most expensive backlight money can buy...only the best for me. lol

Another good (ridiculous) idea - just put the iMac face down on the desk and call it the new mac mini.

27" screen size- they must think its still 2005. Actually didn't they have a 32" in 05? They've regressed! 27" is too small now. You can't even turn the imac sideways, maybe then it could complement my 43" screen.

While I agree with HDR (or DCI P3 white gamut color space), 4K can be very good with a large screen TV (30 Hz notwithstanding) when it isn't scaled, as in 1 to 1 pixel mapping. So much real estate space!

I do miss the press-view display.
