Since it is very unlikely that the next Mac Mini (and the next Macbook Air) will be "4K-ready", I wonder if Apple will release two types of new Thunderbolt Displays: one with the current resolution (hopefully at cheaper price) and one with 4K resolution?

Haswell Mac Mini (current design) + cheaper Thunderbolt Display (+ USB 3.0) would be my perfect combination!!!

IMHO I think it will be 4k ready considering there will be at least a 2 year refresh period and all the other minis are coming out 4k ready. The OS will be 4k ready in the next release. It will require TB2 and PCI for 4k. How Apple deals with that could be like other minis with msata and a bay for sata3 expansion. I don't see a refresh or redesign until IMacs are TB2 and all PCI.
But it is all speculation.

What the heck? Did you notice the cost of ram went up? I had Crucial 16 ram bookmarked and it was $138.00 for a while but now it's $147.00.

ram prices flutter up and down that 16gb would of costed you a cool G 3 years ago
Not entirely true. About 3 years ago I bought 16GB PC1333 RAM for a whopping $85. Still using it in my Thinkpad. There was a period when RAM was dirt cheap and certain kits went down as low as $75-80. Then it went up again. If I sold it today I could turn a 2x profit on resale!

I'm still trying to figure what I am going to do. (since it appears the new mini is not being released this month)

I want an SSD with 512 GB and I was running more #'s

I could get a Mac w/ 21.5 display
2.9 quad I5
16 ram
512 SSD
superdrive
Apple care & numeric usb keyboard
Total: $2447.00

or

2012 Mac Mini X Server
2.3 quad I7
4 GB ram
(2) 256 SSD's (total 512 SSD)
superdrive
Applecare & numeric usb keyboard
Subtotal: $1876.00 plus (I buy 16 GB ram for $150.00 install myself)
Final Total: $2026.00

So this difference is $422.00 and with that I get a 21" monitor w/ camera and slightly better graphic? My fear is if something goes wrong with monitor or internals, it's all together.

What would you do, (if you were not doing any mods other than adding ram) which would you get?

The Mac Mini Server with SSD configuration is extremely overpriced, compared to the regular Mac Mini with SSD. You can only configure the non-server with a single SSD but if you add an aftermarket SSD and cable you'll save several hundred dollars. The single SSD non-server model is $200 less expensive than the same computer configured with the $20 Server application. Since you don't want to make other modifications, have you considered the Fusion drive configuration in the Mini?

Best advice I can give is a refurb I5 Mini and wait for the new Mini to get what you want. You can easily resell on Ebay or Craiglist. The wait will be worth it.
A referb I5 will get you by easily.

Thanks good advice. I know the X server would be a premium price I don't really want to pay but I was kinda thinking it might last me for at least 4 yrs.

I won't get the I5 w/ just a 500 HD at 5200 rpm. I tried that in the apple store and it was super slow.

I could opt for the I7 non server w/ the Fusion drive and put in 16 ram and that total w/ like specs above would be $1426.00 so I would be saving about $600.00

I really don't want to keep my XP past end of March for security reasons and no patches. I should be happy buying a new PC but it's starting to stress me out what to do.

I got around that by adding a sammy 256gb 840 Evo to a USB3 external case to use as my boot drive. 15 sec boot. I use the internal as storage and time machine back up. I also added 8 gb ram. Really fast and if your not running 4 core programs, it's all you need. Got the sammy on sale for $145 and USB case from OWC for $30. Ram was $75 from Amazon.

Does anyone know if the 2012 mac mini supports the new 2013 Time Capsule with the router and 2 TB with the latest 802.11ac technology? It's suppose to give you faster wifi throughout your home. I think the iMac's support it but don't think the mac mini does?

Mac Mini is 802.11n; it will certainly work with a Time Capsule and you'll be able to do backups and stuff, but not at 11ac speeds. It's been plenty fast with mine though.

It doesn't do 80211.ac. And you are right, the iMac does.

Bottom line, the current mini is outdated. And the longer a new one takes, the further it is likely to advance. The big question is punt (buy used / sell) vs go long (change platforms until the next upgrade cycle). How much do you like the platform?

I think more to the point -- does it do what you want it to do? If it does, it doesn't matter if it is outdated. In my case I bought a new one a few weeks ago to replace an existing 4 year old mini as an entertainment server. I had one (I've got three) that had developed flakey wifi and audio output had failed. I didn't need increased performance but it turns out the HDMI connection provides superior picture and sound to the old VGA + analog audio I had before. I'd also consider replacing my mini server (same vintage) with the current model, especially if new ones do come out because of the additional discount. I'd gain 2x the cores and Thunderbolt/USB3 connectivity which, frankly, I wouldn't be using at the moment but it opens up modernizing in the future.
