I've basically been using my MBA as a media server for the past two years and it's taken it's toll. I'm looking to get a replacement that will play movies and a couple of modest games, while hooked up to a few HDs.

I'm deliberating between an Apple TV or a Mac mini, but really I have to wait until they both get refreshed.

I've done most of the above. Cut the cord over 10 years ago, starting with a powerbook g4 hooked up to a small tv. Biggest challenge was keeping the PB cool (no fan) during extended play, even DVD res was a challenge. Changed the PB to an iMac, then to a 2010 mini + Samsung which I'm still running today. I added ATV for exclusive apps/content but spend most evenings with only the mini. Won't likely replace the mini (which now has an SSD) until 4k is predominant.

I remember one of my constant challenges was keeping my little 12" PB cool. My setup looked odd when I used it as a desktop, simply trying to keep the temp down.

I would say that if mac mini wasn't refreshed by now...it won't be until wwdc or some apple event. I kinda suspect some sort of redesign or something because i just can't see one reason not to refresh to haswell, even if it was some sort of small refresh. I am so  because i can barely stay away of not ordering the 2012 model.

If I buy the base mac mini i5, can I remove the 500 harddrive it comes with and replace it with this: Will the mini work with just the Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 750GB 2.5-Inch? I'm thinking of tackling the job myself to save money and buy the ifixit kit for $30.00.

Yes the single drive swap is a lot easier. Here is a good video.

Why would you need the kit though if you are doing a single drive replacement?

I meant the tool kit, don't you need those special tools?
I can swap the drives, it looks easy, my problem is how do I format the new drive with the OS/mavericks that came on the original drive onto the new SSD drive I put in, that's what I don't know how to do. If I take out the drive that it came with I have no way of hooking it up to copy the OS over to the SSD.

Assuming its a new Mini (which it sounds like ) - it'll support internet recovery. You can format the drive using it, and install os x. Just make sure you have a good 'net connection... it works like a charm

Yes the 2012 mini....I didn't know that, thanks for the link, seems easy then.

You're welcome!

Same release as mine. I got the i7 version. Did a 16GB RAM upgrade as soon as I got it, and did the dual HDD kit as well. Installed a SSD and replaced Apple's HDD with a better one. Wound up using internet recovery to install OS X on the SSD I crammed in there.

I'm in upgrade purgatory...LOL I'm on an ancient PowerMac G5 dual 2.0 and this upgrade can't come soon enough. I've been waiting since last summer.

I don't want crappy/dated HD4000 graphics if Iris/Iris Pro is just around the corner. I don't want to play WoW or World of Tanks (Windows game) on barely acceptable hardware.

I'll shell out $300 extra for 16GB of soldered on RAM, if that's what it turns out to be.

Just, please...let the wait be over!!!!!!!

If I am just replacing the original HHD with an SSD drive, would this be the tool kit I would need? I just need the tools but not to add a 2nd drive, just to replace the existing with a SSD. This one is $30.00

http://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/Mac-Mini-Dual-Drive-Kit/IF171-005

that kit is more then you need. it has all you need and the parts to add the second drive.

for a simple swap you need less tools.

do me a favor when you flip your mini over and look at the hard drive is it like this photo : wait for me to find the photo

my install thread. for both drives

New mini next week, because I just bought an i5. The more I thought about it waiting for a magical GPU update that is never apple's focus didn't make much sense for me since even when I had a stronger PC GPU I didn't use it much. I already ordered a 480GB M500 SSD and 16GB of RAM as well. Guessing I'll be set for quite some time.

I got it from B&H for $570 and it came with a free copy of Parallels 9, which I'm not sure if I'll keep or sell to offset the cost.

You're kidding, right? You're still on a G5 and you're afraid that the HD4000 is too dated for you? YOUR COMPUTER IS 9 YEARS OLD! Any Mac made in the last 3-4 years will blow it straight out of the water. I'm surprised you can still even surf the web with that thing. I have a Core 2 Duo MBP that can hardly stream YouTube and that thing has twice the CPU power and far more sophisticated graphics than your G5.

Waiting around for the next update is absolutely pointless. A year ago there was a thread just like this about people wanting HD4000, and I guarantee 6 months after this update there will be another thread with page after page of people pining for next-gen hardware. Either switch to a new Macbook Pro and be the first in line for hardware updates, or just buy what you need when you need it. Problem. Solved.

Thanks for the link. I have not bought the mini yet, I'm trying to figure out how much it's going to cost me to install the SSD myself. I don't want 2 drive, just an SSD, I don't have any tools so I need a kit but that kit seems expensive when I only need some of the items, can I buy some of the tools separate if so which ones do I need just to swap out the original drive with a SSD drive. I'l be getting the 2012 i5 for $599.00 buying the Samsung Electronics 840 EVO 500 GB SSD for $259.00 and Crucial 16 GB ram for $145.00 but I need tools and that kit for $30.00 seems more than I need.

yeah

I'm glad I got the mid 2011 with the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6630M.

Apple should go back to mixed range of mini character:

1) Cheap and unloaded.
2) Discrete graphics.
3) Powerful processor, multiple drive server.
